General Atomics Executives Panel Discussion From Predator to Avenger: the UAV Revolution of Modern Warfare Date of Event: 10 March 2016 Name of Event: From Predator to Avenger: the UAV Revolution of Modern Warfare Speaker: Ioana Broome Panelists: David R. Alexander Michael Atwood Steven Ehlers Geoffrey Butler Speaker Affiliation: Engineer, General Atomics Aeronautical (GA-ASI) Panelists: President of Engineering, GA-ASI Technical Director of Advanced Programs, GA-ASI Sr. Director of Advanced Aircraft Eng., GA-ASI Engineering Manager Airworthiness, GA-ASI Meeting Type: Attendance: Presentation and Panel Discussion 90 Description of Event The Panel Discussion with Executives from General Atomics Aeronautical (GA-ASI) was an event organized by AIAA San Diego and hosted by GA-ASI in Poway, CA. The panel featured leaders, engineers and visionaries from GA-ASI who talked about the history of the UAV industry and GA-ASI s role in the very current and ever-changing aerospace industry. They shared their experiences and wisdom pertaining to Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and the future of this specialty industry. The President of Engineering, Dave Alexander, gave a very insightful talk on the vision that the company had since its origin and the development that he s contributed to along his many years leading this extraordinary company. Next, Michael Atwood (recipient of a 2016 AIAA San Diego award) presented his DARPA sponsored project about Small Unmanned Air Systems (SUAS), which is a fascinating new development that will address the UAS manning problem and push the future of the UAS industry in an unswerving and more efficient direction. Steve Ehlers, Sr. Director of Advanced Aircraft (and past AIAA San Diego section chair), followed with a discussion on the development of advanced aircraft and what the process takes involves from concept to delivery. And lastly, the Airworthiness Engineering Manager, Geoffrey Butler, addressed the future of this industry with its challenges and requirements to allow the RPAs to fly in the national airspace. The presentations were followed by over one hour of interactive panel discussion and Q&A with the audience. The panelists were tremendously forthcoming and established an open environment where all the questions were answered in a very professional manner. The representatives HR, PR, and Talent Acquisition were invited to attend and they all had great feedback about the success of this event. This was the first time ever AIAA San Diego had such a tremendous professional development event approved and hosted by General Atomics Aeronautical.
Was there a joint sponsorship for this activity? if so, with what group(s)?: The event was organized and moderated by AIAA San Diego in collaboration with General Atomics Aeronautical, which is where the event was held. Many departments inside GA-ASI were involved and an immense collaborative effort took place to make this incredible event happen. Besides the panel members and their representatives, Human Resources, Public Relations, Security, Import & Export, and Talent Acquisition were all part of the joint effort in planning and executing this sensational event. Describe any publicity for the event: The event was published on the section website (aiaa-sd.org), a flyer was sent to our membership and mailing list, a one page add was published in the GA newsletter and printed materials were posted around the breakrooms and public areas at work. The event was also advertised on our Facebook page (AIAA San Diego) Explain how this event represents a unique Career & Professional Development activity: The GA Executives Panel Discussion was the first ever AIAA San Diego event of this magnitude approved and hosted by GA-ASI. The event was sold out and we had a great mix of guests from with different backgrounds. Before the start of the presentations, our guests had the opportunity to mingle with each other and meet and greet other like-minded professionals. Among our audience there were students, who brought their resumes, and at the end of the meeting the representative from Talent Acquisition collected them for the company s recruitment portfolio. Besides GA-ASI employees, we had young professionals from the industry, students, retired military, and other aerospace enthusiasts.
Aerospace Heritage Night Date of Event: 7 April 2016 Name of Event: Aerospace Heritage Night Speaker: Kevin Burns Panelists: Lt Gen (Ret) Donald Cromer Ralph James William (Bill) Ketchum Speaker Affiliation: Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Panelists: Most of our panelists are retired or semiretired. They worked for many firms during their long and distinguished careers and some continue in multiple positions well into their senior years. A detailed listing is available upon request. Meeting Type: Attendance Panel discussion 36 Description of Event: Aerospace Heritage Night, featured a panel of some our most distinguished members answering questions put to them by our moderator and the audience. We also recognized several members celebrating Long-Term Membership anniversaries in the last year. Each of our awardees also has the opportunity to speak by himself, if he so chooses. The honorees always enjoy telling their stories and the audience enjoys hearing about living history and how it applies to the events of today. And our audience, young and old, enjoy hearing their stories. Aerospace Heritage Night grew out of the AIAA San Diego section recognizing Long-Term Membership anniversaries at the Awards Banquet. Many attendees enjoyed hearing our older member's fascinating recollections about the past and how it relates to today's important issues. But this would take a large chunk of time and often lead to complaints the Award Banquet was too long. So we decided to have a separate event, where we could gather a group of our senior members and give them an unfettered opportunity to speak. We keep the format as loose and open as possible, allowing the moderator and panelists to guide the panel. Sometimes discussion would follow a question and for others, the moderator simply followed with another question, keeping the discussion moving forward. There seemed to be a focus on developments in space technology and on progress toward greater access to space. Since there was a large number of students and young professionals in the audience, there was also a strong focus on career paths, advancement and staying current with new developments in the industry. The audience was a mix of all ages. Not only did the students and younger guests use this event as an opportunity for networking, but many professional guests were also very serious about making connections.
Describe any publicity for the event: Paper letters and s were sent to potential panelists, inviting them to participate. Honors and Awards officer made multiple phone calls and s to potential panelists, first encouraging their participation and later coordinating the panel. Several s were sent to the San Diego Section membership, inviting them to the event. What makes this event an outstanding activity?: We attracted a diverse an audience that not only included older members who were cronies of the panelists, but also included students and younger members. The audience (including the younger members) was very active in asking questions. The MC said several times he was taking the last question, but the audience kept asking questions. There was positive feedback about the event, including from the younger members. Joint Sponsorship? With what group(s)?: Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Spectrum Center hosted this event and publicized it to their employees. Explain how this event represents a unique Career & Professional Development activity: Aerospace Heritage Night provided opportunities for socialization and career networking before the event, during dinner, during a break and after the event, allowing people in between jobs to make valuable career contacts. A lot questions posed by the moderator and the audience, were about career planning and advice. The council who were present saw guests, both young and old, using this opportunity to network with the professionals present, including themselves. Seeing our distinguished members at the twilight of their careers allows guests who are at an earlier point in their career realize their problems may not be so insurmountable and that aerospace engineering can be a lifelong career.

General Atomics Sciences Education Foundation Meeting Type Attendance Gala Awards Banquet 130 Description of Event: Each year the AIAA San Diego section holds a gala Awards Banquet to recognize accomplishments by the local San Diego aerospace community. This year's banquet was held on Monday April 25, 2016, at the new and very spacious San Diego State University Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union Montezuma Hall. 119 guests were there to honor some of the best in San Diego aerospace.
The two Student Chapter chairs presented one award each, to their outstanding members. We granted eight Reuben H. Fleet Scholarships to deserving students. These were funded by the Reuben H. Fleet Foundation at The San Diego Foundation and by member contributions. Alex Fleet, grandson of Reuben H. Fleet, founder of Consolidated Aircraft, was one of our guests of honor and present the Reuben H. Fleet Scholarships. We recognized the two AIAA Student Chapters for their participation in the 2016 AIAA Design/Build/Fly competition. For making a higher standing at the fly-off than SDSU, we presented the UCSD team with our perennial DBF trophy. AIAA selected the best two aviation related projects from the 61st Annual Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair held April 15 through 17, Marcus Hall and Anshul Singh were both awarded $100 for their projects, "Sub s Anatomy; Buoyancy in Fish and Subs" and "Drone Collision Avoidance," respectively. The AIAA San Diego Section presented seventeen outstanding individuals with twelve different awards, in addition to the student awards described above. They include the following awards. Awards Granted to Individuals Who are Not AIAA Members -- Lifetime Achievement Award, Outstanding Achievement by an Aerospace Organization, Outstanding Contribution to Aerospace Engineering, Outstanding Contribution to Aerospace Management, Outstanding Contribution to Aerospace Research, Outstanding Contribution to Aerospace Education, Outstanding Contribution to the AIAA San Diego Section. Awards for AIAA Members Only -- Outstanding Contribution to the Community, Outstanding Contribution to the AIAA San Diego Section by an AIAA Member, Outstanding Contribution to AIAA at the National Level, Outstanding Contribution to the AIAA San Diego Student Chapter at UCSD, Outstanding Contribution to the AIAA San Diego Student Chapter at SDSU. Describe any publicity for the event: Several s were sent to the San Diego Section membership soliciting for award nominations. Honors and Awards officer made multiple phone calls and sent s to potential award nominators and to coordinate attendance with award winners. correspondences were initiated with the award winners informing them of their award, inviting them to the awards banquet, answering their questions and helping their companies publicize their award. Telephone follow-ups were also used when called for. Several s were sent to the San Diego Section membership inviting them to the awards banquet. What makes this event an outstanding activity?: This is our most enjoyable event of the year. We consistently get overall positive feedback from our audience about this gala event. We succeeded in attracting an audience of all ages, including a large portion of students and younger members. This allows interaction between our students, young professional, professional and retired members, along with STEM K-12 outreach. With so many different companies represented and professionals attending, this is a great opportunity for career networking and socialization, which is especially important to members seeking
employment advancement or contacts. In addition, it is an encouragement for young people to work in aerospace and aspire to succeed. There was positive feedback about the event, including from the younger members. Joint Sponsorship? With what group(s)?: San Diego State University hosted this event. Explain how this event represents a unique Career & Professional Development activity: The Awards Banquet provides opportunities for socialization and career networking before the event, during dinner, during a break and after the event, allowing people in between jobs to make valuable career contacts. The variety of awards also showcases different career options available to the aerospace community. The council saw many people, both young and old, using this opportunity to network with the many professionals present, including themselves. Seeing the accomplishments of so many of their peers shows our guests there is still room in aerospace to do great things. There was positive feedback about the event, including from the younger members.
Describe any career & professional development programs, events or activities that are beneficial to career/workforce development not presented above. All our activities contribute to enhancing the careers of our members, through learning, recognition and networking. Career Enhancement is an important benefit of participating in the section's activities.
