2 President s Message Page 2 January 2015: New Year - New Events! It s a new year and there is a lot going on in the Atlanta Chapter of ASHRAE. First we have the 2015 E- Week Awards Gala coming up on February 28 th. This is a great event and I hope you can make it. Other events to be on the lookout for include our next refrigeration tour being held at one of our local breweries, our spring golf outing, the Life Members and Past President s lunch, and several YEA activities. These are all great events that are fun and where you are able to network with other members. These are also great opportunities for you to get involved. If you are interested in going deeper with your membership activities, please contact me and I will gladly connect you with the group that best fits your interests. Coming up on March 25 th is the Atlanta ASHRAE Chapter Product Trade Show at the North Atlanta Trade Center. Not only will there be the latest products and information for our industry, we will also have technical sessions where you can earn PDH s. The admission is free to all, so please plan to attend. If you are interested in having a booth at the product show, please go to our website for more information. Spaces are going fast, so do not delay! 4 Chapter Meeting Announcement Page 4 Chapter Meeting Notice Tuesday, February 10, AM LEEDv4 - What s in it for Engineers? ) February Lunch Meeting John McFarland, PE, CCP, CEM, LEED AP BD+C John is the VP of Operations and one of three WorkingBuildings Principals. John is committed to promoting sustainability in projects. He has acted as LEED Consultant, and as Sustainability Programmer, and has actively commissioned projects since He has commissioned educational facilities, office buildings, state-of-the-art data centers, cancer research facilities, biological research facilities, and other high-performance and containment research facilities. He has worked as the owner s agent from the design phase through construction and start-up and works effectively with both engineers and contractors, having come from a design/build background. He has been actively involved in the LEED rating systems since 2001 when he served as the LEED consultant and commissioning authority on The Southern Pines Conference Center project that earned a certified rating. Since then he has acted as the LEED consultant on numerous projects in every LEED rating system except LEED for Homes. John served as the president of the Atlanta Chapter of ASHRAE for He served on the LEED for New Construction Core Committee and as Vice-Chair of the Indoor Environmental Quality Technical Advisory Group. Additionally, John served for over 15 years, ultimately as Vice Chair, on the ASHRAE SSPC 62.1 Committee, charged with maintaining ASHRAE Standard 62.1 IAQ and currently serves as a consultant. Awards ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award, Under 40 AEC Industry Rising Stars, Building Design and Construction, 2006 President s Quality Award Gold Level, Sandia National Laboratories, 2005 Young Engineer of the Year for the Atlanta Chapter of ASHRAE, 2001.

5 Chapter Meeting Announcement cont. Page 5 February Lunch Meeting Stanton Stafford, PE, NEBB RCxP, LEED AP BD+C Stanton Stafford is the Managing Principal of Integral Group in Atlanta. Integral Group is a collection of building systems specialists committed to accelerating critical change in the built environment through the integrated design and operation of simple, elegant, costeffective systems for high-performance buildings. Driven by this mission, Stanton is building a team in Atlanta focused on sustainable design and operations, intelligent buildings and performance engineering. A native of Atlanta, Stanton received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Virginia and has spent his career designing, modeling and commissioning HVAC systems for a variety of facility types including hospitals, research laboratories and district energy plants. Stanton is a Voting Member on three ASHRAE Technical Committees where he recently led a subcommittee that rewrote the ASHRAE Handbook Chapters on Energy Use and Management and Building Energy Monitoring. Stanton also Chairs the Board of Directors of the Lifecycle Building Center of Greater Atlanta, an entrepreneurial non-profit focused on bulk waste stream diversion through building material salvage and reuse, serves on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Chapter of the United States Green Building Council and recently became a Charter Member of the University of Georgia's Mechanical Engineering Advisory Board.

11 2015 ASHRAE Annual Meeting Page 11 Save the Dates! The ASHRAE Annual Society Meeting June 27-July 1, Atlanta, GA Hilton on Courtland Street Hotlanta in June! The Atlanta Chapter is responsible for hosting this event and we will need lots of volunteers. There are many opportunities to help: A. Monitors for the Sessions we will need volunteers for the seminars, symposiums, panels, etc. Duties would involve ½ day of checking in attendees by scanning a bar code on the badges. You get free registration for the entire show and can get your PDH points accumulated very quickly B. We need staff for the Information table which is set up in Registration and operates the same hours. You would hand out brochures for local attractions, give directions to local restaurants and shopping, give lists of local churches and restaurants and be generally helpful to attendees. C. Staff the ASHRAE Members Lounge. Just sit around and talk to people, let the hotel know when drinks are running low, answer questions, and be helpful. 12 ASHRAE Scholarship Program Page 12 Scholarships Available - Apply Today! Through its scholarships, ASHRAE seeks to motivate students and prospective students worldwide to pursue an engineering or technology career in the HVAC&R field. The Society s Scholarship Program also serves the public interest by aiding in the education of men and women to become qualified to practice as engineers in HVAC&R. ASHRAE has 28 scholarships available for the school year, for high school seniors entering college through senior undergraduate engineering students and engineering technology students. ASHRAE is seeking your assistance in making student members aware of this financial assistance. * 8 regional/chapter and university-specific scholarships $3,000 to $5,000 each. Now accepting applications! * 12 undergraduate engineering scholarships $3,000 to $10,000 each. Now accepting applications! * 4 high school senior scholarships $3,000 each * 4 engineering technology scholarships $5,000 each Qualified students are encouraged to apply online: Annual Application Deadlines: December 1 st for Undergraduate Engineering, Regional and University-specific Scholarships May 1 st for Engineering Technology and High School Senior Scholarships Scholarships are awarded for the academic year following the application deadline beginning with the fall semester. 14 Membership Promotion (MP) News for Jan 2015 Page 14 January 2015 Happy New year to all of you. A new year and a new story for many and a recycling of the old and tried for many. I wish that this year brings the best that life can offer to you. In the meantime we are glad to report that we have lots and lots of work like before recession started. It's surely feels weird to be back in such a mayhem, Lol. As promised last month we rolled-out the "Membership Champion" campaign on the Chapter webpage: it s a fun concept that we are promoting to help you demonstrate your innate leadership skills within your organization. The campaign basics are posted on the webpage and will be modified to add some perks that might be cool to enjoy on your end, details to be announced on an upcoming meeting. New Members! 15 How to Join ASHRAE Page 15 How Do I Join ASHRAE? 1. Visit to start the process 2. Click Membership on the horizontal menu bar 3. On the pull down menu, click Join 4. Enter your address in the box Verify your status 5. A prospective member will then be directed to enter his or her information. As a new member, your address will not be recognized, and you will be invited to Register Now. 6. After you complete registration, you will be directed to the Individual Information page where you can finally select Join ASHRAE!

Please use the web sites listed below: 1. RSVP and prepay for each event through the Atlanta ASHRAE For events where meals are served, you must at least RSVP to ensure that there will be a meal for you. We encourage you to prepay, as this will speed your way through the check-in process. 2. Pay your Chapter dues of $40 per year directly to the chapter: These dues are in addition to your Society dues and help fund the Chapter s programs and outreach. 3. Donate to ASHRAE Research Promotion. We have a fundraising goal of $44,000 this year, so please do what you can to help fund ASHRAE research. Donate here: 4. 17 Atlanta Chapter Officers Page Chapter Officers John Pruitt Vice President John has been a member of ASHRAE for 7 years. He has served the Atlanta Chapter as Research Promotion Chair for 2 years and Secretary for 1 year. John Graduated from Georgia Tech in 1998 with a Mechanical Engineering degree. Since graduating, he has worked with Johnson Controls in Atlanta as a project manager and account executive. John lives in Marietta and is married with 3 daughters. Rick Dustin Treasurer treasurer@ashraeatlanta.org Rick is a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. He is currently the Director of Engineering at McKenney s, Inc. with responsibility for the HVAC & Plumbing design team as well as the Building Information Modeling (BIM) team. He was a cooperative education student with McKenney s in college and has been employed full time for 22 years. Rick has been a member of ASHRAE for 21 years and has served on the Board of Governors for the local chapter. Nick Kassanis Secretary secretary@ashraeatlanta.org Nick is currently a Commissioning Authority and Energy Modeling Consultant at Sustainable Investment Group (SIG). He is the project manager for Commissioning, Retro-Commissioning and ASHRAE Level I&II Energy Audit projects all over the country in addition to heading up the Energy Modeling department. Nick is a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He has been volunteering with ASHRAE since graduation, making his way through the Student Activities and Research Promotion chair positions..
