3 Outstanding Volunteer JULIE KELBLE Following the tragedy of the Flight for Life helicopter crash on July 3, 2015, Julie Kelble and a team of dedicated volunteers were determined to create a Memorial Park in honor of Patrick Mahany who lost his life, and as a remembrance of those impacted and injured in the crash while in service to others. As the Chair of Memorial Park Steering Committee, Julie and her team gracefully and bravely raised thousands of dollars, obtained substantial pro-bono support from local professionals and mobilized hundreds of community members to contribute. All of the funds were successfully raised, and the Memorial Park was dedicated earlier this year to serve as a reminder of the extraordinary sacrifice, and to help in the healing of our community. Nominated by Ryan and Crystal Mahany and the Memorial Park Steering Committee. Community Collaboration Award CLEAN ENERGY COLLECTIVE SUMMIT COUNTY In a unique partnership that provides clean, renewable energy and helps lower utility bills, Alpine Bank purchased solar panels from the Clean Energy Collective, an Xcel Energy project for western Colorado. Panel ownership was in turn donated to FIRC (Family & Intercultural Resource Center), which offers energy credits from these panels to families, particularly those who do not have the option for home-sited solar energy. This innovative collaboration provides assistance for working families to further stretch their budget and remain in Summit County. David Olbright Outstanding Youth Mentors CAMERON and DOUG LAIDLAW As the founders of the Summit Stix lacrosse program, Cameron and Doug Laidlaw have dedicated countless hours to share lacrosse with local children, even though their children are older and no longer part of the program. They raised funds to help those who couldn t afford participation, organized parental support and managed the required paperwork. As a result of their efforts, the organization is thriving and will be sustainable for years to come. Just as importantly, they created a culture of teamwork and encouragement for the players, providing positive one-on-one coaching and making a life-long impact on the lives of the children and their families. Nominated by Hollyanna Bates. 3
4 Outstanding Board Member PAT KOPYSTIANSKI Since coming to Summit County from New York in 2010, Pat Kopystianski has shared her extensive safety-net health care expertise with the Community Care Clinic, serving as Board Secretary, Vice-President and currently as President of the Board. She helped lead the organization through transformational changes including the complicated process of becoming a Federally Qualified Health Center, essential fundraising for expanded behavioral health and dental services, expansion to Lake and Park counties, and the search for a new CEO. In addition to her outstanding dedication to the Care Clinic, Pat also assists the Summit Senior Center and the Summit School District. Nominated by Don Parsons in conjunction with Marge Gavenda, Maureen Westerland and Sarah Vaine. Outstanding Youth ORION VAN OSS In addition to his outstanding academic achievements, Orion Van Oss has a heart for service. His volunteer efforts include the Frisco Animal Shelter, Lake Dillon Theatre, the Village Water Project, Rotary Interact Club and his church, among others. Orion s enthusiasm and leadership has led others to participate, including helping to organize a food drive for FIRC and the Pi Day fundraiser at Summit High School. His volunteerism also reaches internationally, having participated in the Summit in Honduras project where he helped with school improvements, and in Peru where he volunteered at a local clinic for disabled children. Nominated by Jody Cheatum-Wilson. Dr. Oliver Stonington Outstanding Philanthropists MARY JANE (MJ) AND HANS WURSTER The considerable impact that MJ and Hans Wurster have had on the Breckenridge Music Festival (BMF) includes establishing several agency endowment funds for BMF at The Summit Foundation and utilizing a matching gifts strategy to encourage others to donate. MJ shares her love of music with children and volunteers a considerable amount of time and effort to BMF s Music in the Schools arts education program. Hans has also served as a Trustee for The Summit Foundation for almost ten years. In addition to their commitment and personal involvement with the Breckenridge Music Festival, Hans and MJ also support the Continental Divide Land Trust, National Repertory Orchestra, Breckenridge Film Festival, Summit Community Care Clinic, and The Summit Foundation. Nominated by Tamara Nuzzaci Park. 4
5 Outstanding Business FATTY S PIZZERIA For over 30 years, Fatty s Pizzeria and owner John Daisy has supported our community, providing substantial fundraising support and food to countless nonprofits including The Summit Foundation, Summit Youth Hockey, Summit Rugby, Little Red Schoolhouse, Breckenridge Rotary and the National Repertory Orchestra, just to name a few. As a key leader in the Breckenridge Restaurant Association, Fatty s has also encouraged others to donate. They are the first to step up with fundraisers to assist individuals in need with medical bills or other assistance. With their considerable support of youth organizations and young employees, Fatty s is a community role model for the younger generation and is helping to build the next generation of philanthropists by demonstrating the importance of giving back. Nominated by Guy Bigelow. Outstanding Educator DREW ADKINS As a life-long educator and the current principal at Summit High School, Drew Adkins exemplifies what it means to put students first and encourage their individual success. This unwavering commitment and leadership has translated to significant results, including a zero drop-out rate last year, a laser focus on at-risk populations, increased inclusiveness and numerous accolades for the school and its achievements. He and his team at Summit High School have instituted the rigorous International Baccalaureate program, as well as increasing program offerings in Career and Technical Education. Always the collaborator, Mr. Adkins is also involved with many community groups such as the Healthy Futures Initiative and the Breckenridge Police Advisory Committee. Nominated by Tessa Rathjen and Gretchen Nies. Outstanding Citizens MARSHA and CARY COOPER With their infectious enthusiasm for Summit County and extraordinary community involvement, Cary and Marsha Cooper represent the very best of philanthropy. Cary s legendary leadership and commitment to The Summit Foundation often leads to conversations, typically on the golf course, which inspire others to also provide meaningful financial support and volunteerism in our community. Marsha s thoughtful and strategic approach has been integral in the rocketing success of Breckenridge Creative Arts. She has also been instrumental in the successful fundraising efforts of the Breckenridge Community Center, Lake Dillon Theatre, Summit Community Care Clinic, and Summit Public Radio. Together they have made a tremendous impact on our community and always encourage others to join in the fun. Nominated by Susan Propper and Don Dankner. 5
6 Outstanding Community Organization SUMMIT COUNTY RESCUE GROUP Since 1977, Summit County Rescue Group (SCRG) has been serving our County, as well as others in the State through mutual aid requests. The members of SCRG put their lives, families and jobs on hold serving those needing assistance in our exquisite, but often perilous backcountry. But their commitment goes even further with weekly meetings and trainings, as well as weekend specialty trainings. These responders put in hundreds of hours each year and represent many different areas of our community. The Summit County Rescue Group is run solely by volunteers. Nominated by Georgia Kraatz. Outstanding Nonprofit Professional DAVE MILLER As an entrepreneur at heart, Dave Miller uses creativity and innovation to reach more students and offer Keystone Science School s science education, increasing the number of students served by over 1,000. In his role as Director of Education and Program Sustainability, Dave has created off-site programming across Colorado and partnered with organizations like the Colorado Association for Environmental Education. His commitment to science education was further demonstrated when he was elected to the Summit School District Board of Education. Dave also provides outstanding leadership for the CATCH program, a community collaboration providing after-school and summer enrichment for low-income elementary students. Nominated by Ellen Reid. Spirit of the Summit Award LIFE GUARD 2 CREW JULY 3, 2015 The Spirit of the Summit Award exemplifies a will and character that stands as an example to others. Whether through adversity, a contagious zest for life or an unflagging enthusiasm for community, family or organization, the recipient has a visible, tangible spirit that inspires, changes and enhances all whose lives are touched by them. 6
