1 Our Mission Building A Pipeline of Diverse Talent recruits promising students of color and provides them with multi-year paid internships at some of the nation s leading media companies. Over their summers as Emma Bowen Fellows, our students build ongoing relationships with their sponsor companies, grow in leadership and responsibility and join a community of peers and leaders who push them to succeed. Making An Impact On The Industry When they graduate, our fellows join a distinguished group of alumni. Over 65% of our alumni remain in media and 72% of 2015 graduates are employed in the industry. They work for major media companies across the country in fields ranging from production to finance to public affairs. They are account executives, analysts, and on-air reporters; Emmy and Peabody award winners; and key members of the industry from the edit room to the boardroom. Partnering With Top Media Companies Our work would not be possible without the support of our corporate partners. Each summer they welcome Emma Bowen Fellows into their ranks, providing meaningful work experience, exposure to the media industry, and connections to mentors and colleagues in the field. From major media companies like HBO and CBS to public relations firms like FleishmanHillard to tech organizations like ARRIS and Concurrent Computer Corporation, our partners span the media industry and offer a diverse set of experiences and opportunities for our fellows. Creating a Legacy of Success Over our 26-year history, the Emma Bowen Foundation has provided internships for almost 800 students of color. We believe the key to our continued success is a top/down commitment to diversity, a spotlight on excellence, and careful monitoring of our students and graduates on-going progress a leave nothing to chance approach focused on results.

2 Why We re Needed Media has an enormous impact on all of us. But throughout the media industry, among the companies that influence what we read, see, share, and talk about, the voices of those making the decisions don t reflect the full diversity of those who are watching and listening. Media diversity matters not just in the newsroom or the production studio but across the media landscape, in public relations and advertising agencies, book and game publishing companies, and new media platforms. It is crucial that people of color influence and shape the way we all see and understand the world around us. Unfortunately, diversity is sorely lacking in the media industry. Despite consistent growth in the number of people of color in the United States, media industry decision makers are predominately white males. works to change this dynamic by recruiting talented students of color and providing them with multi-year media industry internships as part of our commitment to broadening the pipeline of diverse talent in the industry. Diversity in the Media Industry People of color are 35% of the US population. How does the media industry stack up? Only 22% of the local television news workforce and 13% of the local print newsroom are people of color. Television and film executive management are both over 90% white. In advertising and communications, less than 7% of the workforce is African-American, 6% is Asian, and 11% is Hispanic. In 2014, only 2% of Google s staff were Latino, and 1% were African-American. Similar numbers held true at Facebook (3% Latino, 1% African- American), and Twitter (3% Latino, 2% African-American).

3 Our Signature Programs The Emma Bowen Fellows The Emma Bowen Fellows Program provides multi-year internships to students of color at media companies across the country. Each student works as a paid summer intern from the summer before their freshman year of college through their college graduation, gaining significant on-the-job training in their field and making connections with colleagues and mentors that last a lifetime. Our fellows graduate with invaluable work experience and a head-start in whichever career they choose. Innovative Program Tracks As the media industry develops and evolves, the Emma Bowen Foundation program tracks take advantage of new opportunities. In 2010, as the media grew increasingly digital, embracing social media, mobile apps, and other new media tools and channels, we responded by establishing the New Media & Technology Program (NM&T). Currently, the NM&T cohort includes nearly 40 students, each working in technology roles at corporate partners including CableLabs, CBS, Fox, HBO, Mediacom, NBCUniversal, Nielsen, and Turner Broadcasting. We also established a media sales track and began working with corporate partners including Bright House Networks, Katz Television Group, and Crown Media Family Networks to educate fellows about sales, marketing and advertising. In 2015, we further explored the revenue-driven side of media by creating a Sales Committee and collaborating with the NAB Education Foundation to establish a pipeline for fellows entry into the NABEF s Media Sales Institute. Link 2.0 Mentoring Initiative The Link 2.0 Mentoring Initiative provides an intensive leadership development experience for Emma Bowen Fellows who show incredible potential for success in their careers due to their talent and tenacity. Each is assigned a mentor to help them reach that potential by giving them perspective on career decisions, workplace dynamics, and media industry trends. The Link experience culminates in a gathering for both mentors and mentees that emphasizes strategic and analytical thinking, decision-making, teamwork, communication, and innovation. IN 2015, 44 FELLOWS HAD GPAS OF 3.75 OR ABOVE AND 93% OF ALL FELLOWS RECEIVED GOOD OR EXCELLENT REVIEWS FROM THEIR SUPERVISORS.

4 Our Signature Programs The Summer Conference Each summer, current Emma Bowen Fellows gather with media industry leaders and Emma Bowen Foundation stakeholders for networking and professional development. The 2015 Summer Conference featured both career guidance and networking opportunities fellows heard presentations from several of the Foundation s corporate partners, including Nielsen and Hearst Television Group, about their goals and strategies for the future; broke into small groups to discuss a media case study and present their proposed solutions; and attended social receptions at the headquarters of New York-based media organizations. The Summer Conference is headlined by a career fair which gives our Fellows direct access to human resources staff at top media companies. In 2015, participating career fair companies included A+E Networks, Atlantic Media, CBS, Charter Communications, Comcast, Concurrent Computer Corporation, Cox Media Group, C-SPAN, Discovery, FleishmanHillard, FOX, HBO, Hearst Television, Katz Media, NBCUniversal, Nielsen, Porter Novelli, Scripps Networks Interactive, Time Warner Cable, Turner Broadcasting, and Univision. The 2015 Emma Awards In 2015, the Emma Bowen Foundation began recognizing outstanding fellows with Emma Awards to reward their hard work and inspire others to follow their lead. The 2015 Emmas were awarded as follows: The Emma for Courage To Rajeswari Ramanathan for her courage to pitch a story about athletes with disabilities to Berkeley s CalTV. Raji s corporate sponsor was NBCUniversal. The Emma for Storytelling To Francisco Bernard for the skill in communication he exhibited in his article on race relations at Boston College. Francisco s corporate sponsor was FOX. The Emma for Leadership Tp Jillian Duran for her ongoing leadership at Arizona State University. Jillian s corporate sponsor is NBCUniversal. The Emma for Innovation To Foluke Tuakli for utilizing innovative business ideas to make the world a better place. Foluke s corporate sponsor is Comcast. The Emma for Ubuntu To Kylie Walker for her ability to bridge differences at Texas Christian University and utilize diversity to build community. Kylie s corporate sponsor is FOX. The Emma for Influencing To Najah Diop for marshalling resources to deliver over 10,000 pairs of shoes to El Salvadorian children. Najah s corporate sponsor is Discovery. Student of the Year Awards Each year two students are recognized for overall excellence during the Emma Bowen Fellows program. In 2015, Student of the Year went to seniors Rajeswari Ramanathan and Francisco Bernard. Both 2015 Students of the Year will keep their talent in the media industry: Rajeswari was hired by her corporate sponsor, NBCUniversal, while Francisco, who interned for Fox, works for Hearst Television.

5 Our Staff Rahsaan Harris, PhD President and CEO Dr. Harris has more than 15 years of direct experience working in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. He received his doctorate in Public and Urban Policy from the New School, where his dissertation was on understanding how socio-economic diversity in the African-American community affects their philanthropic interests. He also holds a Master in Management and High School Science Education from New York University and Columbia, respectively, and a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University. Sandra Rice Senior Vice President, National Recruitment For nearly two decades, Sandra Rice has helped to develop the careers of hundreds of college students of color by placing them in internships that help build strong resumes. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors of several nonprofits including Union County College Foundation in New Jersey. She is also Chair of the Scholarship Committee for the National Coalition of 100 Black Women (Bergen Passaic Chapter). Sandra received her Bachelor of Arts, Journalism, Radio & Television from San Jose State University and her Master in Media Studies from The New School in New York City. Michael Barham Director, Strategy and Analytics Michael is an operations and programs specialist with more than seven years of experience in nonprofit and public sector organizations that educate, train and empower young people. He is passionate about equal opportunity and equity, especially with regard to education. Michael was born and raised in New York City, attended Stuyvesant High School and received his Bachelor of Psychology from the University of Michigan. He is currently pursuing his Master of Public Administration from Baruch s School of Public Affairs.

6 Our Staff Erin Roberts Director, Development & Communications Erin Roberts has over 10 years of experience working with and for organizations that make a difference in the world. She is passionate about the role of media in making an impact on society and has been fortunate to work for several media organizations, including WNET New York Media and The Paley Center for Media. She has a Masters in Television/Radio/Film from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University. Tricia Andersen-Vie Program Manager Tricia Andersen-Vie graduated from The University of Texas at El Paso with a Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies, and has over 15 years experience in operational and program management. Prior to joining the Emma Bowen Foundation nearly five years ago, she served in various marketing and management roles in Texas, such as Brand Manager, Operations Manager and Director of Marketing at both large consumer product companies and a startup food company. Tricia is committed to the Emma Bowen Foundation s mission of diversity, opportunity, experience and excellence. Jackeline Romero Program Manager Jackeline Romero has over 18 years experience working for nonprofit organizations. She is currently a Program Manager at the Emma Bowen Foundation and has worked for the Foundation for over 14 years. Prior to working at the Emma Bowen Foundation she worked as a Field Manager in the mental health sector. Jackeline holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Santa Maria La Antigua University, Panama City, PA. Crystal Aldape Recruitment Associate Crystal Aldape graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. After college, she returned to Texas where she served as an ASSET*AmeriCorps team leader with United Cerebral Palsy of Texas, which merged with Easter Seals of Central Texas. Following her AmeriCorps terms, Crystal worked for the Texas Senate Research Center as a Research Associate.
