Sold-Out Conference Leads the Way in La Jolla_ By Grahame Watts What makes MMASC special are the people - the ones supporting the efforts of local government to ensure critical services are provided to communities throughout Southern California. This year s conference focused on Leading the Way and that is what many local public service professionals did for three days in La Jolla. As noted more than once by conference sponsors, the future of local government is bright as the supply of new emerging leaders is plentiful. A lot can happen in one year and we have much to be proud of. Historically, MMASC has operated as a volunteer organization with four elected executive board members and at least eight region leaders who represent the Southern California region. This year, many people stepped up to help and get involved and that is what made the difference. MMASC now has an Executive Director on Board, a website that works, a regular newsletter that reaches 2,500 people per month and many public and private sector partners that share common goals a desire to keep Southern California strong and vibrant. The sessions were good, the speakers were excellent (Powerpoints to be posted by July 14) and the local activities were outstanding. Sure, some feedback offered ideas for improving the conference, but in my opinion, MMASC just grew up. (In addition to the on-site general evaluation, all attendees will soon get an opportunity to complete a detailed electronic conference evaluation.) These mostly young, and a few not as young, leaders have done a heck of a job throughout the year and at the conference. Check out some of the photos on the following pages. It s just not possible to list all the many good people deserving a thank you and acknowledgement for a job well done. The truth is that the job is not yet done. MMASC is well on its way to reaching a goal of 1,000 members by 2010 and we need your help. Please remember to stay involved in MMASC, support our profession by setting a good example and voting in the Executive Board elections. Remember, every vote counts.

2 MMASC Storms La Jolla_ Conference Scholarship Program_ The Municipal Management Association of Southern California (MMASC) is the premier regional association for emerging local government leaders and professional development with a mission statement of Developing People, Developing Communities. To further this mission, MMASC strives to provide practical learning experiences, opportunities for leadership and guidelines for professional practice. Toward this goal each year, MMASC provides its members scholarship opportunities for various personal conference and seminars. This year we are excited to host three MMASC young professionals and student members as our Conference Scholarship recipients for the 2008 MMASC Annual Conference in La Jolla, California. Our three recipients were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants. The 2008 Conference Scholarship recipients were: Lisa Scott Jones Encinitas Fire Department Nathaniel Meek City of Lake Forest and University of Southern California Sarah Rafi City of Lakewood The 2008 MMASC Conference Committee and Executive Board would like to thank the members of the Scholarship Committee that marketed these opportunities to the membership and reviewed the numerous applications received to select the recipients. Thank you to our Scholarship Committee: Carl Alameda (City of La Cañada Flintridge), Mark Brower (City of Beverly Hills) and Colin Tudor (City of Claremont).
