Recognitions and Fines: John Uth happily announced that Burt Berry celebrated his 88 th birthday! President Scott recognized Rotarian Emily Borland as of the Month is! Emily hosted 40 Rotaractors at her home. Thank you, Emily, and congratulations! President Scott inducted two new members into the club: Clif Thomas is a CPA, with a classification of Tax Accounting. Clif is a golfer and the past treasurer of Elks. He is sponsored by John Hoch. Bill LeRoy, with a classification of CPA, is retired and a serious sailor. His boat, Gone With The Wind, is about to sail in the Rhode Island to Bermuda race. Good luck, Bill. Bill is sponsored by Jim Patrick. Welcome, Clif and Bill! Today's program was a 'thank you' to SF2 for the Matching Grant provided by SF2 and the Colima Rotarians. The Grant provided 3,300 books for the children in Colima. The Rotarians from Colima, Nine La Dow, and other Rotarians sorted, labeled and delivered the mini-libraries to 16 rural Colima Schools. The effort was facilitated by a Project Amigo Literacy Work Week. Rotarians Ted Rose and Susan Hill founded Project Amigo, which began many years ago, when Ted took the wrong bus on a vacation in Mexico, and was stranded in the poor village of Colima. He was taken by the children, the open loving nature of the residents, and struck by the poverty. Changing poverty into opportunity for the children of Colima became Ted and Susan's life work. To get out of poverty, the children needed to learn to read. Though the town still struggles, many of the children have been the first generation to go to school, and graduate from college. The town has elected the first college educated mayor, a graduate of Ted and Susan's Project Amigo. Mireya Rincon-Torres spoke about her experience. She participated in Project Amigo as a child, and thanked us for supporting education in Colima. With this opportunity given to her through Project Amigo, she was able to go to college and law school. Tedinvited us all to attend the work days in Colima. He emphasized that we stay in first class accommodations, and spend the days reading with the children. For more information, see their website: projectamigo.org. Next week: Chair of the day, Alex Wong will present Christine Goodin, the GSE Chair, and the visiting team from Italy. See you next week! President Scott adjourned the meeting. SAVE THE DATE- MAY 23
