1 The Tattler Rotary Club of La Mesa Volume , No.77 Meeting Date: 2/3/16 Wednesday s ednesday Noon, La Mesa Community Center, 4975 Memorial Drive, La Mesa CA Janice Kurth District rict Governor Janice was born in Berkeley, California but spent most of her youth in Houston, Texas. Her husband, Matt was born in Leipzig, Germany and immigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was ten years of age. He resided in Massachusetts and graduated from Andover Phillips Academy. Janice and Matt met at Baylor College of Medicine and have been married 26 years. They have two daughters, ages 22 and 24 years. Janice earned her B.A. in chemistry from Aus Austin College, Ph.D. in human genetics at Stanford University, and M.D. from University of Arizona, with post-graduate graduate training in internal medicine. Her professional career has included medical practice, academic and industrial biomedical research, product and software development, research management and pharmaceutical medicine. She is now retired to a life of service to her community, family and Rotary. Janice is a member of the Rotary Club of Del Mar. Mar She was a GSE Team Leader to District 9200 (East Africa) in February, She has served District 5340 in several capacities. Her other service activities include mentoring teenage students, founding and/or serving on several everal educational foundations in her community, The San Diego Women s Foundation and Founding Board Member of Team Mates Mentoring San Diego. In their free time, Janice and Matt enjoy running, weight lifting, wine tasting, boogie boarding, traveling, reading, read wine tasting, hiking, biking, yoga, swimming, snow skiing and.wine tasting. Police Chief Vasquez, a number of members from the La Mesa Police Dept and his wife Whitney joined us for lunch Wednesday to honor Officer Wright as he received his award! Dani Womack is the Chaplain for the La Mesa Police department as well as a member of the La Mesa Rotary. Dani was able to present Officer Wright with this honor. Officer Wright was given a plaque for the Honor, a check for $300 from La Mesa Rotary, a $100 Gift Card to the Hills restaurant in La Mesa as well as another $50 Dining Gift Card.
3 La Mesa Rotary Club Donates $1,000 to Shelter to Soldier La Mesa Rotary Board of Directors The Shelter to Soldier program helps wounded veterans by giving them a training dog as a partner. These dogs are basically rescued from the Shelter then put under a 14-month training program to prepare them. President: Mark Mathews Vic Martin suffered a brain injury and is diagnosed with PTSD. He came to La Mesa Rotary and shared his story. La mesa Rotary is proud to present Vic a check for $1,000 for the Shelter to Soldier program (and a bag of bones for Kira, his training dog). This is part of our annual Charitable Giving Campaign. Sponsored by the Charitable Giving Committee. 4 Rotary Fellowship and Networking Event February 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Join fellow Rotarians for fun, fellowship and business networking on February 3, 2016, 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the beautiful law offices of Higgs, Fletcher & Mack high atop the Columbia Center in Downtown San Diego. This combined function is brought to you by the San Diego Rotary Club, the Coronado Rotary Club, Rotary District 5340 and San Diego State Rotaract R Club. This will be a wonderful event where you can meet new Rotary friends and business contacts while enjoying the penthouse balcony view of San Diego Harbor. College fare of pizza and munchies will be provided as well as adult and soft beverage beverages. Remember to bring your business cards! 5 DISTRICT DINNER AT STORE BREWERY Tuesday February 9th 6:00 pm Come have a great time of fellowship with other Rotarians at the Stone Brewery location at Liberty Station on Tuesday, February 9th. District 5340 is sponsoring a Beer Tasting Event and Dinner. The location is Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens - Liberty Station; 2816 Historic Decatur Road, San Diego. The event begins at 6:00 PM with beer tasting followed by dinner at 7:00. Music by guitarist John Robinson. The cost is $55 per person and that includes dinner and 2 beer tastings. Reservations can be made by going to the District 5340 website at La Mesa Rotary New Member Application Mario Duff has applied for membership with La Mesa Rotary. 6 Rotary 4-Way Test Speech Contest Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Del Mar The 4-Way Test Of the things we think, say, or do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Sam Bauchmann is leading the push for La Mesa Rotary to get high school students from the schools we sponsor (Grossmont, Patrick Henry, Mount Miguel & Monte Vista) to compete in the 4-Way Test Speech competition. He has a packet of information if you know of any students that would be interested. General Guidelines: 1. The purpose is to help youth. Rotarians and the community-at-large to more completely understand, encourage, and foster the principles of Rotary and the objects of Service Above Self. 2. The contest is open to all studentsapproved by the high school. Each school will hold its own contest, sponsored and arranged by the Rotary Club, or, when available, its associated interact club.
