S P E C I A L C A N D I D A T E S I S S U E OCTOBER 28, 2009 Mike Abney Michael Born, M.D. Bob Johnston Toby Smith Candidates Night will be held in the Main Dining Room of The Plantation House on Monday, November 16th at 6 p.m. at which the slate for next year s Board will be presented and you will have the opportunity to participate in the vetting process. Three new Directors will be elected to serve three year terms from the slate of four candidates whose pictures and brief biographies follow in alphabetical order. The formal election will take place at the Annual Meeting of The Plantation Association on Wednesday, January 13, IN THIS ISSUE: MIKE ABNEY 2 MICHAEL BORN, M.D. 3 Your Nominating Committee, Cooper Agent, Rick Davis, Jayne Evans, Joe Hannan, Larry Knoll, Bill Lush, Dwayne McAfee and Leo McCullagh BOB JOHNSTON 4 TOBY SMITH 5
PAGE 2 Mike Abney Mike and Joy are both Jacksonville natives and have lived in The Plantation since They have been married for 31 years. Mike, a University of Florida graduate and CPA, was a partner in the international accounting firm of PriceWaterhouseCoopers for 35 years, the last seventeen as managing partner of the firm s North Florida office. He retired in 1992 to accept a position as the CFO of the MPS Group, Inc. (NYSE), an international staffing firm headquartered in Jacksonville. He retired a second time in 2000 but continues to serve on MPS Group s Board of Directors, as well as the Advisory Boards for the Warrington College of Business and the Fisher School of Accounting at the University of Florida. Mike served on the Plantation s Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the Association from He has been a member of the Finance Committee for the past 6 years. Mike is committed to fostering a spirit of courtesy and cooperation between the Board and membership to further the goal of maintaining the reputation of the Plantation as the finest gated community in North Florida.
PAGE 3 Michael Born, M.D. I am an Orlando native (pre-mickey) and graduated from Emory University (B.A. and M.D. degrees). After residency training and service as a Major in the USAF, I practiced Obstetrics-Gynecology in Miami for 18 years, the last nine as managing partner. I served on the Board of Governors of South Miami Hospital and Chaired its OB-Gyn Department. In 1995, I joined the staff at Mayo Clinic Florida. For the past six years I have been Chair of the Department of Gynecology. I will retire from full-time practice February 1 st. Donna and I met as undergraduates at Emory and have been married 42 years. We have two children and three grandchildren. We consider ourselves very fortunate to live in a special place like The Plantation, with its natural beauty and wonderful facilities. Continuous quality improvement, within the bounds of economic realities, is important to me. Managing a private medical practice or a Mayo department involves serious decision-making, necessitated by the imperative to maintain quality while controlling costs. I make these decisions after a thorough, open and honest assessment of the data. This experience would form the basis for my approach to the issues and opportunities in Plantation s future.
PAGE 4 Bob Johnston Bob and Nancy moved to The Plantation in September 2004 from Rockville, Maryland. Bob graduated from William & Mary. He went to Army OCS, was the supply officer of the Computer Systems Command, and was a supply officer in Viet Nam. After military service, he returned to W&M for law school. As a trial lawyer for 30+ years in the Washington DC area, Bob handled cases involving business, construction, employment, and tort matters. Bob spent 8 years litigating in Manhattan for a Japanese businessman, obtaining the largest ever tort verdict for malicious prosecution in the state of New York. Over the years, he served as chairman of two committees of the Maryland Bar Association, was a church board of education president, and a board member for his Bethesda citizen s association. At the Chevy Chase Club, he served on golf and skating committees and founded the Not So Fast League, a group of adult beginner and novice ice hockey players. Between them, Bob and Nancy have 7 children and 4 grandchildren. They feel lucky they found the Plantation and feel much has improved since they arrived. Bob looks to continue improvement of every facet of this gem of a community.
PAGE 5 Toby Smith Mr. Smith has been elected to the Board twice. During his second term ( ) Smith Chaired the Association s first Governance Committee as well as the Human Resources Committee. In 2007, Mr. Smith was elected Secretary and given the responsibility for the management of the Association s legal affairs. Smith s business and legal career has involved the corporate restructurings and refinancings of such companies and brands as London Fog, Puma, Escada, Oneida and Atkins. Other active Board or executive engagements have been with FAG Bearings, Barnes Engineering, Venture Industries and the Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx Zoo) where he was CEO. Currently Mr. Smith is advising InterActive Nutrition (Canada), Funa GmbH (Germany) and HSL Stack s Rare Coins (New York). He has been affiliated with the law firms of Foley & Lardner and Whitman & Ransom as either partner or counsel. A graduate of Williams College and the Yale Law School, Smith clerked on the United States Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. and the Supreme Court of Connecticut. Mr. Smith also studied in Latin America as Fellow of the Organization of American States. Residents of the Plantation since 1990, Mimi and Toby have five grown children and 12 grandchildren.
