1 A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT Note from the President... 1 House of Delegates Meeting Spring Conference... 3 Award Winners Annual APWA Conference... 8 Calendar of Events... 9 Did You Know? Brian Clennan Greetings! I hope you are enjoying summer, my favorite time of the year. I want to thank Jeff Lackey, the conference planning committee, and the City of Lawrence staff for putting on a great Spring Conference. We had a great turnout with excellent speakers and networking opportunities. Below is a list of a few items the board has been working on: Scholarships: We will be reviewing how much money and how many scholarships to provide to students. The Scholarship Committee is meeting in July to discuss these issues and will be providing a recommendation for the board to consider. History: We have hired an editor to check over our history document. We have also added historian duties to the past president's responsibilities, so that the history document will be kept up to date. Public Awareness: We are in the process of recognizing our APWA award winners at council meetings. Training/Networking Opportunities: Be sure to check our APWA Kansas website for the upcoming Fall Meeting date and for an upcoming round table date. Also, check out the APWA National website members library. This is a huge benefit for members. Have a great summer. I hope to see you at the Fall Meeting and/or our next round table discussion. 2 Regions VI, VIII and IX Spring 2013 House of Delegates Meeting North Lake Tahoe, CA May 3-4 Kenzil K. Lynn, APWA KS Alternate Delegate, Region VI The meeting was held at the CalNeva Resort. We received comments from APWA President-elect Ed Gottko. Larry Stevens, Region VI Director, gave a National Update from the Regional Directors. APWA National Staff gave an update on strategic priorities and held an open discussion. There was a discussion about Delegates Responsibilities. Case Studies on Young Professionals Outreach were presented to the group. Great ideas were shared on how to build a YPN. Break-out sessions were held by region. Chapter reports were distributed during the breakout session. We appointed Mike Geisel, Alt. Delegate Missouri Chapter, to the task force being created to discuss the role of the House of Delegates. Discussion of topics for next HOD meeting was held. Best practices from all the chapters were shared with the group. Input from APWA members 1. Do you have a unique idea on how to increase APWA membership? 2. What are some ways you benefit by being an APWA member? comments/input to Karla Waters karla.waters@wilsonco.com 2
3 2013 Spring Conference Jeffrey R. Lackey, PE The 2013 APWA Kansas Chapter Spring Conference was held at the Oread Hotel in Lawrence on May 1-3. This year s conference had extra meaning as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Kansas Chapter and we wanted to make sure the program recognized that accomplishment. National APWA President Elizabeth Treadway spoke, followed by a roundtable discussion with Jerry Petty and Dennis Clennan. Jerry and Dennis spoke to the attendees about how the Chapter was formed and how it evolved over the years. Other events at this year s conference included the annual golf tournament held at Alvamar, the Scholarship Auction, and to close the conference activities, a tour of Allen Field House. From all accounts, the conference was a success we had over 130 attendees, vendors, speakers and sponsors take part in this year s events. If you haven t done so, please take the opportunity to thank David Cronin and the City of Lawrence for their outstanding job of hosting our Spring Conference. I d also like to thank and recognize the Planning Committee for their hard work in putting together a great program, as well as all of our distinguished speakers. Finally, if you have any suggestions for ways we can improve the conference going forward, don t hesitate to call or me or contact a board member. 10 Did You Know That The first bathing suit worn in Greece in 350 BC. Later, togas were worn when swimming and bathing reached the heights of its popularity in the ancient world The Chinese invented and wore the first pair of sun glasses more than 2,000 years ago. About one-quarter of the world's lemons are grown in the U.S. California is home to the most lemon trees. In 1776, the first ice cream parlor opened in New York City. Naming the birthplace of the American hotdog is problematic as Coburg, Frankfort, and Vienna all claim the honor, although in truth the American hotdog is most likely a descendent of the traditional sausage eaten by many Europeans and brought to the U.S. 1 0
