Though this law was put in place, the demand for alcohol was not diminished. This demand was supplied in the Port Huron area by rum running from Canada, where prohibition laws had been repealed in the 1920s. Trips to drop off alcohol often ended before the shoreline, with rumrunners dropping their hauls into the water to avoid being caught by authorities. Come and experience our collection of lore surrounding this era of deceit, adventure, and everyday law breaking right here in Port Huron at our exhibit starting September 13 th, 2014 and learn more about it with the many public programs listed inside! 8 P A G E 8 The Fort Gratiot Hospital Project Update The Fort Gratiot Hospital project continues to progress. It was open to the public during SandFest, and may visitors took advantage of open doors and the beautiful interpretive materials designed and installed by Dave Bennis. Carl & Marcia Jahn we our hosts, and Trish & Carl Moss, Breezy Mullins and Luke Wallace attended in Civil War era dress and also hosted. We are also grateful to 3 members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ottawa Chapter, that assisted visitors. We earned $347 in donations. All funds donated go toward the restoration project only. The project got another HUGE boost on August A group of able volunteers from Lowes in Fort Gratiot were joined by a team from Radatz Contracting and worked on the structure. Over those two days, they were able to paint and install the cedar siding in the north and south ends of the structure. Skilled masons added the brick to the foundation, making a huge difference in its appearance. They were a wonderful, enthusiastic team that made a difference and took us a step closer to finishing the exterior. Next up: the installation of windows and doors, hopefully yet this fall. As with this project objective, as the funds become available through grants and donations, the work will be done. Thank you for supporting the Fort Gratiot Hospital project RADATZ CONTRACTING Interested in becoming involved? The Fort Gratiot Heritage committee meets every other month at the Carnegie Center or FGLS Our meeting is Monday, September 8, at 4:00 pm at the Fog signal Building at the Fort Gratiot Light Station. Folks from the Carnegie Center, HURON Lightship, Fort Gratiot Light Station and SandFest volunteers feasted on an amazing potluck buffet. Brownies were the favorite dish and were all delicious! With stomachs full, all gathered in front of the tower for group photo Thank you to all of our dedicated and talented volunteers. We could not do it without each of you! SPECIAL RECOGNITION: The staff of the Port Huron Museum extends a heartfelt THANK YOU & GOOD LUCK to JOHN GANGER as he retires from volunteering at the Museum.
