1 District 5170 Club #487 Chartered 1924 Volume #20 Issue #32 August 11, 2009 SOCIAL MEDIA AND SOCIAL NETWORKING Amy Alleman introduced today s speaker, Club member Kristin McCullough. Her educational background is San Jose State University completed course work towards ecommerce Management Masters Certificate; George Washington University - Project Management Masters Certificate; University of Chicago, completed course work towards an MBA; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan BA Psychology, Minor in Systems & Accounting. Since 1999 Kristin has been with IBM Global Services, Cisco Systems, McAfee, and other smaller firms. She currently works in the areas of project or program manager for vision, mission, and strategy planning; process definition, standardization, & improvement; cross functional collaboration and planning; change management. McCullough talked about the rise of Social Media, what it is, and it s purpose. Traditionally there was a one way communication of content over the web. With Social Media there is two-way communication. She discussed the types of Social Media: Blogs (providing content to others and allowing them to comment on it short for Web Today s speaker Club member Kristin McCullough Log); Micro Blogs (short text messages on media like Twitter where your message needs to be under a certain number of characters); Social Networking (examples are MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn). Kristin provided a very thorough full color slide show to go along with her presentation. It provides internet sites where you can go to start a blog, or start social networking. She also talked about collaboration tools such as Wikipedia, an online dictionary that is constantly being updated and kept accurate by the community of users. There are also tools that allow the sharing of multimedia such as YouTube (Videos), Flickr.com and SmugMug.com (Photo Sharing). Thank you, Kristin for your hard work, great slide presentation, and education on a subject that seems to be constantly referenced by our media. Jim wants to go to heaven like his Grandfather, peacefully in his sleep not yelling and screaming like his car s passengers! We Care Bill Cilker told us Rosemary Pierce s back is starting to feel better. Joe Varozza also updated us: Ray Cobb s Parkinson s is getting worse. The doctor increased his medication, but he still enjoys talking to his fellow Rotarians. Cas Szukalski is recovering from surgery and starting to feel better. History Corner Chat Forbes gave us a more in-depth account of Robert Louis Stevenson, the famous Scottish novelist, and his relationship to Fanny Osbourne. He told of Fanny s or Tiger Lilly s upbringing in Indianapolis, first marriage and move out to California, their meeting in France and subsequent romance. She and RLS married and honeymooned in the Napa Valley. She was eleven years his senior and gave him the emotional support to sustain him while he penned some of his most famous works. They eventually retreated to Western Samoa and there he died at 40 years of age.
