2 STMA Hosted by Redlands University Greater L.A. Basin and So Cal Chapters Visit Home of Redlands Bulldogs The following story about STMA s August 4 th visit to the athletic fields of Redlands University appeared in the Redlands University Athletic Department August online newsletter along with several of the event photos you find here. Many thanks to Rachel J. Roche, M.A., Assistant Athletic Director - Sports Information, Senior Woman Administrator for the nice write-up. Bulldog Athletics Shines as Host of the Sports Turf Managers Association Regional Meeting Earlier this month, Bulldog Athletics had the privilege of hosting the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) Regional Meeting, providing a unique opportunity to showcase the outstanding athletic facilities and amazing staff who manage them at the University of Redlands. With more than 50 individual attendees representing organizations like the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Rams, USC, UCLA, the City of La Verne, the City of Beverly Hills, Athletic Field Specialists, multiple school districts, Hunter Industries, Turf Star, and many others, the half-day gathering allowed a large constituent of professionals to observe, learn, and network in a casual yet informative setting. Several presentations took place in an effort to share ideas and best practices for managing different turf and grass venues throughout Southern California. Kelly Cooper, who serves as the Bulldogs Athletic Facilities Supervisor, was a featured speaker at the meeting. With over 20 years of experience at Redlands, he brings incredible knowledge and expertise to the art and science of field management. Sharing my knowledge of sports turf with the members of STMA was an amazing opportunity. The University of Redlands athletic facilities impressed some of the best in the business, Cooper stated. The positive feedback from other sports turf experts validates that our U of R student-athletes are playing on top-notch surfaces. With Cooper and Director of Athletics Jeff Martinez leading the way, the attendees also toured the various athletics facilities and perused the high-tech equipment that Cooper and his staff use to prepare the various athletic venues at Redlands. Finally, 15 sponsors helped offset the costs of the event in return for setting up informational tables throughout Frank Serrao Gateway inside of Ted Runner Stadium. GLAB SECRETARY Caroline Hollosy, Past President Brian Scott and Turf Star s Scott Deeth work the registration table. PIONEER ATHLETICS reps Mandy Hart, Mike Maldonado and Katie Sellers welcome STMA GLAB and SO CAL members. 4 Brian s Journey to Health When Was the Last Time You Did Something for the First Time? By Brian Scott, STMA-GLAB Past President, Mt. SAC Department Chair Agricultural Sciences It was fall I was burning out. At work I faced a task list a mile long and it was getting longer in spite of all the extra time I was committing to getting caught up. At home I was coaching sports and trying to stay involved in all of my children s activities. I felt like the proverbial hamster on the wheel. Something had to change, but what? I took inventory and realized that I was taking care of everyone but myself. I rationalized that I did not have time to take care of me, or did I? I began considering what the future would hold if I stayed on that path, and it scared me. My health was not bad, but I was heading in the wrong direction. I knew deep down inside that I needed to change some habits, but I had excellent excuses why that would not work. I had long hours at work, often getting home at midnight and starting all over again at 6 a.m. My weekends were swamped. Blah, blah, blah. I decided to commit to 90 days of a workout program, no excuses. So on January 22, 2012, I began. I worked out early in the morning and late at night. I worked out at home and on trips. I did not miss a day. After 90 days I was pleased with my results. I began another 90 day cycle and successfully completed that with even better results. After my third 90 cycle, I decided I was ready to do more, so I ran my first half marathon in February After running a couple of half marathons I stumbled across an event called a Tough Mudder in March of This was a mile course with 30 obstacles and massive elevation gains through a mountainous course. I was hooked. I stood in the starting gate and the motivational host posed a question: When was the last time you did something for the first time? He also talked about the fact that you win a tough mudder by doing your personal best and lending a hand to your fellow mudders in need. I became hooked on obstacle course races, or OCR s as they are called. I have since run more than 15 OCR s, including the grueling 24 hour World s Toughest Mudder in November 2016, completing 40 miles and 160 obstacles. Did I mention I am 51 years old? Many people ask me why I do what I do. My answer is simple. Because I can and because I cannot afford NOT to. My mental health is better. My physical health is better. My work and family life have improved. Have there been sacrifices? Of course. I get up early, stay up late, do what it takes to add ME to the equation of taking care of business. It all started with a simple question a question for YOU to ponder. When was the last time you did something for the first time? Then do it. One step at a time. You just might be amazed at what you can accomplish. 4 Summer 2017 Sports Turf Managers Association - Greater Los Angeles Basin Chapter
