1 1 FROM THE PRESIDENT S DESK Steve Hansen Chapter President Howdy, Austin Chapter! Springtime is awesome, isn't it? The days are longer, the world around us is getting greener, and daylight saving time is almost upon us. I love springtime. I'd like to start off by thanking Mr. Levi Tully with Reliable Controls for educating us on BAS Cyber Security. For those that missed it, it was a very interesting discussion, and our fellow ASHRAE members are tackling it head-on with a new version of BACnet called "BACnet Secure Connect". It's in its first public review period, so it will take awhile before becoming part of Standard 135. Inside this issue: Government Advocacy 2 Programs 3 Membership Promo 6 YEA 7 Student Activities 8 Now, back to springtime. The best part about springtime is golf. Dell Match Play, the Masters, and the even-more-impressive ASHRAE Golf Tournament on March 26th. We are once again playing the Signature Course at The Hills Golf Club. You've seen the flyers in your and at our meetings, so please enjoy a work-approved day on the links. Looking ahead to the rest of the spring, we have more excitement on April 19 with a tour of the 15,000-ton UT Chiller Station #7 and presentation by UT's very own Juan Ontiveros, P.E. We will tour the plant first, then hear Mr. Ontiveros' presentation a couple short blocks away at Scholz Garten. Also in April, we have the ASHRAE Region VIII Chapter Regional Conference CRC in San Antonio. This year is during Fiesta, or as the Alamo Chapter is calling it, the "world's largest ASHRAE CRC welcome party". If you've ever wanted to see how ASHRAE as an organization works, this is a great place to see it in action. Treasurer s Report 9 Feb Meeting Minutes 10 BOG Meeting Minutes 11 Officer Roster 12 Website StarChapter 13 Golf Tournament 14 History 15 Last, but not least, we have another hard-hitting presentation on one of the core technologies in our industry: variable-frequency drives (VFDs). Mr. Jay Jorczak with Yaskawa will be presenting the latest trends and considerations to be made when selecting the right features and options on variable frequency drives. I love these topics that hit hard on some of the most fundamental things we can agree on in our industry. Somehow, we always find a way to disagree when it comes to the specifics, though. So, bring your questions! See you Thursday! Refrigeration 18 UPCOMING EVENTS Golf Tournament Mar 26 Hills of Lakeway Golf Club Steve

6 6 Membership Promotions This is another reminder for those of you who haven t paid your dues yet, both locally and for Society. Please do so as soon as possible. Particularly, for many of you who have been members prior to the days when the membership year changed. In the old days, our Society year went from July 1 to June 30. Many of us have our membership renewal date beginning July 1. Younger members renewal dates can fall anywhere during the year. To reiterate your membership duties: Stuart Bloomquist Membership Promotions Chair If you have passed your yearly renewal date and have not paid your dues within the first three months since that date (months 1 to 3), you are considered DELINQUENT! If you are currently in the second three months (months 4 to 6), you are now in your GRACE PERIOD. The first day after a six (6) month period after the anniversary date, all UNPAID DELINQUENT MEM BERS will be dropped from the system and no longer tracked. If this happens your will need to be reinstated. I summarized the steps taken by Society a few months ago, and we are continuously trying to reduce our Chapter s delinquency counts throughout the year by reminding members to pay their dues once their paid Society year is complete. If you need further information, call Society or me for details on how Society monitors your membership and its various notifications. Please also remember that Society membership is a prerequisite to local membership. Local membership in Austin s Chapter helps support our local efforts. You can pay your local dues online at the same time you pay your Society dues, or simply bring your dues payment to a monthly meeting. This will allow us to keep you informed on all local activities. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the me at during the day, or via at stuartb@mechreps.com. If you find that you have not paid your dues, you can go to the ASHRAE website and pay your dues online at Should you have any questions regarding this effort, do not hesitate to contact ASHRAE headquarters at ASHRAE. Remember that PAID UP members have the greatest impact on both Society s and the local Chapter s financial bottom line. Respectfully Submitted, Stuart Bloomquist Membership Promotion Chair

15 15 History Article General Interest Part 01 Austin Chapter History Society Year This is the Austin Chapter s 1st Year of Existence! The Society year for the Austin ASHRAE Chapter (066) began in July The meeting was announced with Volume I, Issue No. 1 of the Austin Register. The meeting was at the Pioneer Drive In located at 829 Barton Springs Road. This is the current site of a large office building across the street from the Palmer Events Center. This was the beginning of the Austin Chapter s very first Presidential (B. Segall Jr.) year. As a relative thought, this Historian was only six months old when the Austin Chapter began functioning under President Segall. To date, I am unable to find a good photo of President Segall, but it is hoped someday that will happen. Another photo is available farther down in this historical summary. No Picture Available Randy Schrecengost, Historian The Austin Register s Masthead was simple and listed the four Officers and two Board of Governors at the time. The newsletter itself was simply two pages printed front and back on 8 1/2 x 14 inch pages so it could be folded and mailed as a letter. The author does not know much about Bernard Segall, Jr., known to everyone as B. He was born September 29, 1919 in Beaumont, Texas, but was moved to Shreveport, Louisiana at an early age where he attended public school. After high school, B went to Georgia Tech, and after four years received a degree in mechanical engineering and a commission in the Army Air Corps. In the military he first became a glider pilot then promoted to fixed wing multi engine war planes such as the C 47. After VE Day, B returned to work in the family business in Shreveport, but ultimately got married to Muriel (Mimi) Lindstrom whom he met in military. She was a W.A.S.P. and USC graduate. Eventually they moved to Austin, where they made a home on Lake Austin.

16 16 History Article General Interest Part 01 (Continued) centrally air conditioned building in Mexico City), and IBM/Madrid. After retiring, B continued to consult with friends in the HVAC business and served as an expert witness in highly select personal injury cases. B Segall passed away peacefully on November 3, 2007 following a long illness. A summary story of the Austin Chapter has been printed before, but it is always good to recap our History whenever possible. The organization of the Austin Chapter started about 1954 when several people around Austin expressed a desire to form a Chapter instead of being included with San Antonio and Corpus Christi in the Southwest Texas Chapter which was head quartered at San Antonio. Many of the Austin members would travel to the monthly meetings in San Antonio. Even though close now a days, the trip was long for a week night and attendance to the meetings was small. Member Mr. Bill Luedecke worked very hard and was highly instrumental in creating enthusiasm for and promoting interest for this Chapter from the very beginning, Thus during a meeting of the Southwest Texas Chapter in Austin in October 1955, the formation of the Austin Chapter was proposed. Attendance at this meeting include Mr. P, B. Gordon, National (Society) Vice President, and Mr. D. M. Mills, who was Regional Director of the Region 6, and all the members of the Board of Governors of the Southwest Texas Chapter. After lengthy discussions, it was decided that a healthy chapter could operate here in Austin; and, it would also strengthen the Southwest Texas Chapter since it would tend to localize its operations. From that point, through the leadership of Frank Frazee, President of the Southwest Texas Chapter, and the San Antonio's Chapter official publication, The Squirrel Cage, an organizational meeting was called in January of B. Segall Jr. was elected Chair of the temporary organization and the group had regular monthly with programs organized by another future president Mr. A. C. Lagow who had been elected as Vice Chairman. Several planning meetings were held by the Board of Governors and all of the Officers of the Chapter worked hard to get a good Chapter organized. For the first Chapter Meeting, the Chapter had 43 members and 3 others awaiting membership action by the National Society. Another item to reiterate is that the Austin Chapter was to be the 63rd Chapter of the American Society of Heating & Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE), and not ASHRAE which came into existence later when ASHAE and ASRE joined (refer to historical summary articles at our historical website links). The Austin Chapter is currently number 066 within ASHRAE. There are only three (3) known newsletters that exist for B s ASHRAE year: The very first newsletter in July of 1956, and the sixth and seventh newsletters of January and February 1957, respectively. Copies of all three are in the Austin History Center with all other historically significant information of the Austin Chapter. If anyone of the older members of the Chapter has any ASHRAE information such as old newsletters, or other significant document, please contact this author to ensure History is preserved. The third Thursday of the month was chosen to be the monthly meeting day (and has been tradition ever since). The meeting

17 17 Vintage HVAC Advertisements, 1931 Advertisement from 1931, the third year of HPAC Engineering magazine, then called Heating Piping and Air Conditioning was a year of great American classics: Charlie Chaplin in the theaters, baseball legends Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, the first Dracula movie, and Al Capone.

18 18 Refrigeration ASHRAE members enjoyed learning about refrigeration in the YEA organized Austin Beerworks Brewery Happy Hour this past February 20th. Tasting these popular beers, attendees were able to learn about the many benefits of refrigeration that enable breweries to produce and store beer. The event was a great success, thanks to YEA for organizing this didactic event. Lorenzo Gonzalez Refrigeration Chair Refrigerator fun facts: The first household refrigerator produced by General Electric in 1911 was based on a design by a French Cistercian monk and physics teacher named Marcel Audiffren. The monk s sulfur dioxide refrigerating process took the form of a wooden refrigerator named the Audiffren. It cost $1000, which was twice as much as an automobile.

This month's meeting will be a lunch meeting at County Line on the LAKE (2222 Location). I hope you come and enjoy. -Steve UPCOMING EVENTS
