1 English II Advanced Summer Reading and Assignment *Before you begin, please read and consider the following statement closely: You have expressed interest in Advanced English II. Make sure you are prepared to have a rigorous and strenuous class. More will be expected of you than has been expected in the past. Do not sign up for Advanced English if you are not prepared to work hard, get your work in on time, and behave in class. This class will challenge you beyond grade-level academic courses. This class will move at a faster pace, include different types of assignments, and require additional outside reading. My expectations for this class are incredibly high. Live up to it. ***This will be due by the first day of class. Make sure you have this finished. If this assignment is not finished, you will have a schedule change on the first day of school. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee You are expected to read the whole book before school starts. (376 pages) -Not just watch the movie -Not just look up spark notes -Not get the answers on Snapchat.etc. Carefully read the book. You may use a school copy or buy your own. The book is available on amazon.com for $8.99. You may take notes as you read, but please do not write in the books belonging to the school. As you read, be looking for the references to Mockingbirds. There are five. You will be expected to answer questions for each chapter. Use complete sentences and be sure to restate the question. Pay attention to your grammar and spelling. As you read, if you do not understand something or a particular word, look it up. Open up your mind with understanding. Dictionary.com is a free app on your smartphone. Do not just read and skip over things you do not understand fully. The only way to get smarter is to do the research on your own. You can do this. Most of the questions will be your opinion. If your answers are the same as another person s you both receive a zero for the assignment. If your answers are straight from the internet, you will receive a zero.

2 As you answer these questions, pay attention to your spelling and grammar. Answer in a complete sentence, and restate the questions. I expect well-thought out responses, with effort. When it says explain, I expect a good explanation. Your rigor starts now. I expect so much from you, give it to me. Pre-Reading Article: Before you read To Kill a Mockingbird, read Herd Behavior. Underline statements and things that stand out to you, and explain why it does in the margins. Write any questions or comments you have in the margins. Have a conversation with the text. Then answer the following questions. Why would herd behavior have an aspect of irrationality? Explain well. Can you think of an example of herd behavior in high school life? Explain well. Why is herd behavior a negative aspect of life? Explain well. Pre-Reading Research: Look up the following subjects. List facts about that subject - at least 10. Be sure to use a credible source. 3 To Kill a Mockingbird Chapter Questions: Read each chapter carefully. Answer each question in a complete sentence. Pay attention to your spelling and grammar. Restate each question. Chapter 1: Reread the second complete paragraph on page 6, starting with People moved slowly then. Do you think our world has sped up? Is it different than it was back then? Explain. Give examples. Why would Macomb view the Radley s as different or suspicious? Chapter 2: Why would Miss Caroline tell Scout s father not to teach her anymore? Chapter 3: Read the last part of page 39, starting with First of all Explain what you think Atticus means. Is this relevant to us today? How? Explain well. Chapter 4: Immune in the daytime. (pg.51)what does that mean to a child? Explain well.

4 Chapter 5: What does it say about Miss Maude s character that she corrects Scout when she says Boo Radley? Why would Jem make sure he was out of earshot before he speaks on page 66? Chapter 7: Why do you think the tree was plugged with cement? Chapter 8: What does this chapter say about Miss Maudie s character? Explain well. Chapter 9: Reread pages Explain the significance of this conversation between Atticus and his children. What do you think is the most important thing Atticus says? Why? Explain well. Explain Macomb s usual disease. How does this relate to Herd Behavior?

5 Chapter 10: People in their right minds never take pride in their talents, said Miss Maudie. Explain this quote. Do you think this is true? Why or why not? Chapter 11: Toward the bottom of page 133, Atticus gives Jem some advice about Mrs. Dubose. Is this advice relevant to you? Explain. Reread page 149. Explain Atticus s explanation of courage. Do you think this is true? Explain your answer. Chapter 12: Read the poem Learning to Read after you read this chapter. How does the poem and Chapter 12 relate? Use evidence from both texts to support your answer. Chapter 13: Read the poem On Turning Ten. Read it as if it were Jem speaking. How are Scout and Jem impacted by their environment? What does growing up mean to them? How does this poem relate to the novel? Explain.

6 Chapter 15: Explain what Atticus means when he responds to Mr. Link Deas on page 195 about the truth. Chapter 16: Explain the significance of the conversation between Atticus and Scout on page 210. Do people today have blind spots? Explain. Chapter 17: Reread the last paragraph on page 232. People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for Is this true even today? Explain well. Chapter 18: What do Mayella s broad range of emotions suggest to you? What does it say about Atticus that he didn t enjoy what he had just done when he finished questioning Mayella?

7 Chapter 19: Why did Dill have such a problem? Explain the last sentence of the chapter. Chapter 20: Reread the first full paragraph on page 273. Explain stereotypes. What are they? Give modern-day examples. Why are they so detrimental? Chapter 21: Reread the last line of the chapter. Why did they stand as Atticus passed by? Chapter 22: I don t know, but they did it. They ve done it before and they did it tonight and they ll do it again and when they do it seems that only children weep. Explain this statement by Atticus. Explain what Miss Maudie means in her explanation of Atticus on page 288. (in relation to unpleasant jobs)

8 Chapter 23: So far nothing in your life has interfered with your reasoning process. (pg. 295) What kinds of things can interfere with reasoning? Has this happened in your life? Explain. Explain the significance of what Jem says in the last paragraph. Chapter 24: Why is the town afraid? What are they afraid of? Chapter 25: Explain this quote from page 323: Atticus has used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men s hearts Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed. Chapter 26: Where is the irony in this chapter? Explain well. Chapter 29: Why can t Atticus conceive of a man that would hurt children? What does that say about his character?

9 Chapter 30: I can t live one way in town and another way in my home. Explain this quote. Chapter 31: Atticus, he was real nice Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them. Explain this. How is it relevant to your life? There are five references to Mockingbirds in this book. Why do you think the author named this book To Kill a Mockingbird? Explain well. Post-Reading Article: Read the article The Scottsboro Boys. Underline statements and things that stand out to you, and explain why it does in the margins. Write any questions or comments you have in the margins. Have a conversation with the text. What are the similarities between this real-life case and To Kill a Mockingbird? How could this have influenced Harper Lee as a child?
