1 RULES & PROCEDURES QUIZZES One way to review and reinforce rules and procedures with students at the beginning of the year is to give them a Rules and Procedures Quiz. Make it mandatory that everyone gets 100% on the quiz. Let students take it as many times as is necessary until they achieve this goal. Then file the quizzes away to be used as evidence, should you need it, that at one time they did in fact know what the rules were. See the three sample quizzes below to get ideas of how to create this type of quiz. Rules/Procedures/Syllabus Quiz: Sample 1 Directions: Please choose the best answer to the questions below. To pass this quiz you must score 100%. You may take the quiz as many times as necessary to achieve that score. 1. When entering the classroom at the beginning of the period, the proper procedure is to a.) check the assignment on the board and get to work. b.) check the assignment on the board and get to it when you have time. c.) check the assignment on the board and text your friends about it. 2. Take out my science homework, and work on that for a bit. 3. How do you show Ms. W that you have something to say? a. Wave my hand in the air and say Oh! Oh! Oh! until Ms. W calls on me. b. Call out enthusiastically whenever I have something to say. c. Raise my hand and quietly wait for Ms. W to call on me. 4. What does it mean to actively listen? a. Actively listening means I am sitting up, facing the person talking, and thinking about what is being said and how I would respond. b. Actively listening means I am being active while listening, running in place, tossing a ball around, doing some jumping jacks-that kind of thing. c. Actively listening means I am listening to what is being said and chatting with my neighbor about it when I have a question or a response. 5. What should you do if you have a burning question for Ms. W as soon as you enter ELA? a. Ask it as soon as I see her so that I don t forget it? b. Raise my hand when Ms. W asks if there are any questions. c. See if I can figure out the answers myself or by quietly asking my neighbor. d. Both C and B e. Both A and C 6. Come to class with super hard books like Shakespeare s Macbeth and Dicken s Great Expectations, and then brag about how they are soooooooooo easy! b. Select a spot during independent reading and writing that is separate from everyone else so that I can really focus and concentrate without any distractions. c. Ask Ms. W to read my novel that I m writing in my free time. 10. What should you do if you would like to have a conversation with Ms. W? a. Sign up for a conference on the board and wait until my name is called. b. Approach Ms. W directly after the mini-lesson and ask for a conference. c. Say really loudly, I need to talk to you, Ms. W! before heading back to my seat. 11. What happens when you hear the chime? a. I do the hokey pokey and turn myself around. b. Stop talking and look at Ms. W. c. Stop talking and look at Ms. W after I finish my conversation. 12. What is the proper body language in the meeting area? a.
