Agents of K.I.N.D. Bible Story: Agents of K.I.N.D. (Barnabas and Saul) Acts 9:26-30 Bottom Line: Be kind to people who aren t kind to you. Memory Verse: Do to others as you want them to do to you. Luke 6:31, NIrV Life App: Kindness showing others they are valuable by how you treat them. Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated. Plug In: Focus the Energy (Small Groups, minutes) Focus the energy on today s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Pray that each child in your group will understand that since Jesus died for everyone, His love extends to everyone whether they re nice or not and so should theirs. Ask God to give them wisdom to understand how to show kindness to those who aren t kind to them. Pray that the kids will understand that they CAN do this with God s help. 1. Early Arriver Idea What You Need: An offering container Collect kids offerings as they arrive. Talk with them about kindness and what it feels like when someone isn t kind to them. What do you normally do when someone isn t kind to you? What about when you watch a classmate or a friend be unkind? What do you do when your brother or sister isn t kind? Is your reaction the same to everyone? Why or why not? 2. You Don t Say What You Need: No supplies needed As a group, brainstorm ways you can be kind. But here s the catch: do this without talking! Everyone has to act out a kindness method until someone in the group guesses it. Make sure everyone gets a turn. (Examples: hug, sharing, giving someone a jacket, helping someone up, etc.) We ve been talking about being kind all month. Today s story is going to be a little bit challenging, but I think you all can handle it. [Transition] Let s go to Large Group and find out more about it! Lead your group to the Large Group area. 1

Catch On: Make the Connection (Small Groups, minutes) Make the connection of how today s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions. 1. Spell It Out (application activity / great for active learners) What You Need: no supplies needed Why is it hard to be kind to someone when they aren t kind to you? (Pause for responses.) How does it make you feel? (Pause for responses.) Why can it sometimes be scary to be kind to unkind people? (Pause for responses.) [Make It Personal] (Tell a personal story of when someone wasn t kind you. Tell kids this is something that even adults have to deal with and think about. Provide an age-appropriate example like when someone was rude to you at work by not speaking to you or by saying something unkind to you. How did you handle it? Was that the best way to handle it? If not, what could you have done differently?) [Apply] But God calls us to be kind no matter what even if someone doesn t deserve it. How can you practice kind responses and kind actions this week? (Pause for responses.) [Impress] Be kind to people who aren t kind to you. After your discussion, have everyone work together and use their bodies to spell out the Bottom Line: [Impress] be kind to people who aren t kind to you. If time is an issue, you could just spell out KIND or KINDNESS. You can use multiple people per letter or try to make each letter with just one person. Take photos of this with your smart phone or mobile device to show the kids what they created! (If you spell out a short word like Kind you can use an app like DipTic to make a collage and send to their parents.) 2. Put Into Action (application activity / review the Bible story / great for active learners) supplies provided What You Need: Situation Cards Activity Page, Bible Open your Bible to Acts 9:26-30 and read the Bible story aloud to the group. Then divide everyone into four smaller groups and hand them a situation card. After they have had a few minutes to plan, they will act out how to be kind in each situation. Situations: 1) Barnabas and Saul 2) There s a kid on the bus who always says mean things to you. 3) Your neighbor won t ever share his LEGOs with you. 4) Your sister always shuts you out of her room and will never let you play with her. Wow! You guys were great. Have you ever found yourself in situations like the ones we talked about? (Pause for responses.) [Apply] How can you put kindness into action? (Pause for responses.) Do you think it s harder to be kind when someone isn t being kind to you? Why or why not? (Pause for responses.) But we serve a kind God. He s always loving us and showing us how important we are 2

to Him, even when we don t deserve it. So we need to treat others like that too and [Impress] be kind to people who aren t kind to you. 3. Caring Cara and Rude Russ (memory verse activity) What You Need: Caring Cara and Rude Russ Story Activity Page Read the Caring Cara and Rude Russ Story aloud and follow the cues in the script. Have you ever responded like Rude Russ? Maybe you were irritated that someone else was being unkind, so you decided to put a stop to it. I know I have. [Apply] But how can you be like Caring Cara instead? What does the Bible teach us to do? (Treat others the way we want to be treated.) Remember to [Impress] be kind to people who aren t kind to you. Pray and Dismiss What You Need: White board (or butcher paper), marker Help kids brainstorm a list of unkind things kids tend to do. (Be sure not to list the names of the people who do them.) Let people take turns writing things on the white board. Then use the list to pray, asking for help and wisdom when kids want to be unkind, like doing the things on the list, and ask specifically for kindness to be shown instead. Pray for courage to be kind even when others aren t kind to them. Example of prayer: Help these kids to be kind even when [something from the list] and even when [something from the list]. Instead, help them to [love, use kind words, give hugs, share, etc.]. Give them courage to be kind even when no one else is. God, You know how hard it is for us to stand alone and make the right choice when no one else is. We need Your help! Amen. You know, this list is awfully long. I think that s because it s easy to be unkind and sometimes without even knowing we re doing it! [Apply] When you feel like being unkind, pray and ask God for help so that you can [Impress] be kind to people who aren t kind to you. It s not always easy, but it s always the right thing to do and it s always what Jesus wants us to do. 3

Your neighbor won t ever share his LEGOs with you. Your sister always shuts you out of her room and will never let you play with her. Barnabas and Saul There s a kid on the bus who always says mean things to you. What to Do: Copy onto cardstock and cut apart. Make one copy for each Small Group. Situation Cards February 2015, Week 4, 2014 The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved.

SAY: Today on the way to school, a little boy dropped his book bag and everything spilled out all over the place. Caring Cara stopped and helped him pick everything up and made sure he was okay. But Rude Russ scattered the papers and then stepped right over everything on his way off the bus. SAY: Let s say our memory verse together: Do to others as you want them to do to you. Luke 6:31, NIrV So Caring Cara did exactly what the Bible says. She showed kindness showing others they are valuable by how you treat them. Caring Cara did a great job. Later in the day, when everyone was eating lunch, someone cut in front of Caring Cara and Rude Russ in the lunch line. Caring Cara gently tapped her on the shoulder and said, You must be in a hurry. I don t mind if you jump in line in front of me. Do you need any help with anything? But Rude Russ tugged on her shirt, stuck his tongue out, and then shouted, You can t cut. You have to go to the back. SAY: Let s say our memory verse again: Do to others as you want them to do to you. Luke 6:31, NIrV. So Caring Cara did exactly what the Bible says. She was kind and showed others they were valuable by how she treated them. When it was time to pack up to go home, a girl in the class started swinging her jacket around her head like a helicopter. It was hitting everyone in the head. Caring Cara helped the girl find a place to swing her jacket without hurting anyone, but Rude Russ yanked the jacket from her and threw it on the ground while yelling, Stop it! SAY: One more time, let s say our memory verse together: Do to others as you want them to do to you. Luke 6:31, NIrV. Once again, Caring Cara did exactly what the Bible says. She was kind. And kindness is showing others they are valuable by how you treat them. Caring Cara was on a roll! What to Do: Make one copy for each Small Group.
