Overview: Finding Information at The University Library Scene Title: Lunch at BeanBurger The friends meet at the BeanBurger for lunch. In this is an introductory scene the friends begin their discussion of the University Library search feature. Summary: and meet with the Student at BeanBurger at lunchtime. The discussion turns to the University Library and how to use it most effectively for their school work. Dialogue: There you are! Can you believe this place? Pretty amazing, but I don t have a clue what to order. Try the Veggie Portobello Mushroom Burger. It s the only thing that s been able to pull me out of my research paper depression today. Maybe I will. Although, the Avocado Avalanche looks good, too. What s going on with your paper? I ve been using the Choose a Resource by Subject page to help me locate sources for my paper, but all it keeps turning up is this small set of magazine articles and biased white papers I know my professor is going to want me to cast the net wider and get better sources. I keep telling to think about his University Library search like he thinks about solving an IT problem for a customer at work. The answer is there, but sometimes you have to ask a more experienced person to chime in. Hey, you can start chiming in any time now,! Don t be shy. I d like to hear more about this, too. You must be a pro by now. I m still a student myself, so I don t know everything, but I d be glad to share what I ve learned! Just not right now. Sorry, gotta get back to work. Why don t we have a conference call on this later on tonight and I ll walk you guys through the basics, okay? I have to work tonight, and I m already in trouble for chatting too much with my developer buddies. We ll figure out a good time,, don t worry. (to Student) How about you? Nine o clock tonight okay?
Sure. Thanks,! Scene Title: Phone call at home from This scene takes place in the student s apartment, in the family room. The student receives a call from. Summary: shows the student the basics of a University Library Resource search. (on phone) (on phone) (on phone) (on phone) (on phone) (on phone) (on phone) Hi! Whew! My five-year old just fell asleep! Didn t think it would happen in time, but it was perfect. Are you ready? Yes. I looked at the Library home page and I can see why it can be intimidating at first. Yes, there s a lot there, but it s all good stuff, very helpful. Tonight, let s focus on the top left area, the section that says University Library with the search area below it. This is the main search engine for the online library. You can search across all of the references by typing a keyword in here. Can you do a search for SEO for search engine optimization? I just ran a search on that for the marketing firm I work for. Now, just click Search and away we go. Notice how many results came up. That s a lot. I can see why you might want to start off narrowing your search. Yes, but you can do that here, by entering criteria at the top to search within these results here. You can even refine your search a bit more by selecting various choices in the columns on each side of your results window. Where should I even begin? I was feeling like that the other day, and you know what I did? I asked a librarian. That s funny! This is an online library, remember? No, I m serious. You just go to the University Library page, by clicking on the link that says University Library
(on the phone) Then you click on Ask a Librarian, fill out the form, and within 48 hours, you get helpful research recommendations ed right to you. (on the phone) That s great! Did you get any good recommendations? I sure did. Oh, hey, I think I hear my daughter calling for water. I better run. I m meeting at the Coffee Café tomorrow morning at seven-thirty to go over narrowing your online library search. You re welcome to join us if you want. Hey, I ll take all the help I can get. Thanks,. (on the phone) No problem. And, remember-- not too much water or you ll wet the bed. What!? (on the phone) Oh, I was talking to my daughter, sorry. (laughing) See you tomorrow morning! Goodnight! Scene Title: Local Coffee Shop Meeting This scene takes place in the local coffee shop. There is a meeting with and. And, remember, the Ask a Librarian service is only for questions related to research. You can t ask them for help with personal issues. I ll try to remember that. (Speaking to Student) Oh, hey you! Check out what was showing me about narrowing an online search for references. I d like to see that. Yeah, I tried a search last night on my own and started to panic, so I stopped. Okay, so let s put the panic to rest. Think of it all as good information, but you re interested in finding the best for your purposes, right? I know that the University Library is like a gateway to a ton of great Resources, but I don t see how to access them on the home page. Remember, from the home page, you can click on the University Library link to get to the main Resource area. See, now you can click on any of these options to search a particular
collection or Resource within the main one. You ve got General Reference, Specialized Resources; Books, Dissertations, and Theses; and Choose Resources By Subject, to name a few. When you click on one of these, you ll see a list of these types of resources, like here, clicking on General Resources, shows you a new page with three more choices, the three general resources you can search for your topic within. This may sound crazy, but what is a Resource again? Is the Books Resource the same as ebooks? <1RESOURCE> It s pretty much a searchable information storage area. You can think of a Resource as a collection, or as a barrel with its own unique contents that you can search through. When you re looking in one barrel, you won t find the contents of another. <2BOOKS> (sings) (sarcastic) This Books Resource is not the same as ebooks. That s important to know. The University Library has ebooks covering a wide array of subject areas. There is also a collection of ebooks, which are course related textbooks, and these are accessed from ecampus on the LIBRARY tab. Roll out the barrels! We ll have a barrel of fun! You re a barrel of laughs,. Hey, it works for my uncle at weddings. Listen, before I run off to work, I wanted to show you guys this. Here on the results page, on the right column, it shows you the references that your results were pulled from. By selecting or deselecting the boxes you can expand or narrow your search. Got it? Ok, but how do you download an article to use for your paper? Good question! I ll send you an at lunchtime with instructions on how to do that, okay? I don t want to be late! exits. (to student) Hey, I volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and I m taking my Big Brother buddy to the park at lunchtime. Do you want to meet us there and check out the ? Sounds like a plan!
Scene Title: Meeting at the Park This scene takes place at the local park. Summary: In this interaction, the student meets at the park and they sit at a picnic table with a view of the playground where his buddy plays with friends. As they talk, performs a demonstration. from Tommy! Put the lead pipe down! Okay. Play nice! (to Student) Hey there. I didn t think you d make it. Are you hungry? I have leftover chicken chunks. Tommy couldn t finish them. No, uh, thanks,. Did you get the from? Not yet. Let s check. Subject: How to download an article or resource text. Hey, Here s what you do. Once you see an article or excerpt that you think might work, click on the link beneath it to either view the full text as a.pdf or html page. Then, from there, you ll have options to download and save the article. Just select what you want. Any q s, let me know! Gabriella Ramirez Digital Marketing Manager LiveAds, Inc. Looks pretty simple. Should we try it? Sure, let s do a search on milk in the health and wellness Resource. Tommy! Put the lead pipe down! Okay. Play nice! (to Student) Hey there. I didn t think you d make it. Are you hungry? I have leftover chicken chunks. Tommy couldn t finish them. No, uh, thanks,. Did you get the from? Not yet. Let s check.
from Subject: How to download an article or resource text. Alicia (on phone Looks pretty simple. Should we try it? Sure, let s do a search on milk in the health and wellness Resource. Thanks! See you then!
Scene Title: Online Chat with Alicia This scene takes place at the student s apartment in the family room. Summary: The Student is working on their computer and chatting with Alicia. This is an interactive mentoring scene. Alicia asks five questions of mixed types that quiz the Student on accessing the Library elements described, seeking Library help, and the process of downloading resources. Alicia Hey, I appreciate your agreeing to do this. I ll keep it brief, since I know it s getting late. My first question is pretty simple. I ve been using the University Library search feature for three years, but I ve always done it the same way, by searching from the home page. Is there a better option for a more advanced search right off the bat? <choice 1> No, this is the best place to start. <choice 2> Yes, click on the Ask a Librarian link and that will let you ask more complex search questions. <choice 3> Yes, click on the University Library link and that will take you to the main Resource page. Alicia s response #1 I do start on the home page, but a better option for advanced search is to click the University Library link to get to the main Resource page. Alicia s response # 2 You re exactly right that the Ask a Librarian link will help me in my search, but to get there I first have to click on the University Library link. Alicia s response #3 Yes! Then, I click on the Ask a Librarian link to get helpful research recommendations. Alicia Okay, so if I wanted to see how caffeine has been marketed to kids in high school over the years, how should I start my search? <choice 1> You could enter the keyword caffeine and click search, so you have a wide selection. Then you can narrow your results down with words like high schoolers and marketing. <choice 2> You can just search in the Marketing Resource page after clicking on ChooseResources by Subject. <choice 3> You can give your son a double espresso and stand back and watch.
Alicia s response # 1 Good job! It s always better to start big and work your way down. Alicia s response # 2 Alicia s response # 3 This is one way to do it, but your results will start off too narrow. It s best to start big, simply enter the keyword caffeine, click search and then narrow the results that follow with words like high schoolers and marketing. Very funny, but no! First, simply enter the keyword caffeine, click Search and then narrow the results that follow with words like high schoolers and marketing. Alicia That s sounds helpful. What about once I have my search results? How do I narrow these results by the type of reference? <choice 1> Not sure. Ask. <choice 2> On the right side of your search results page you ll see the references that have been searched. You can select or deselect as you desire. Alicia s response # 1 Alicia s response #2 <choice 3> The name of the reference is listed in each citation. It sounds like you may need a little more help! Remember, on the right side of the search results page are the references that have already been searched. To expand or narrow my search, I would just select or deselect the boxes. You ve got it! Selecting additional boxes expands the search, while deselecting narrows it. Alicia Okay, now if I want to narrow my search to specifically Monster drinks, how do I do that? <choice 1> You can start a brand new search on the home page. <choice 2> You can enter another keyword on the bottom left column. <choice 3> You can enter another keyword up top and then click Search again. Alicia s response # 1 Well, it does require an additional search; but, the best way to narrow a search would be to enter another keyword at the top. In this case I would enter Monster, and then click Search again. Alicia s response #2 Ta da! That s right. In this case, I just enter the keyword, Monster.
Alicia Last one, and then I have to run, and I m sure you want to get some rest. How do I download an article or text for use later? <choice 1 When viewing the citation for it, click on the link beneath it to either view the full text as a.pdf or html page. Then, from there, you ll have options to download and save. <CORRECT CHOICE> <choice 2> Select everything and then copy to your clipboard. <choice 3> Transcribe by hand. It worked for the medieval monks! Alicia s response # 1 Alicia s response #2 Alicia s response #3 Alicia Yes, it s that easy. Good job! That might work on some articles, but a better method is to click the link under the article you re viewing and choose either.pdf or html, depending on how you want to read it. Then, choose from the download options. Nice one, but I think the medieval monks would have gotten quicker results by clicking the link under the article to view the text either as a.pdf or html page, and then choosing a download option. Thanks so much! I gotta go run and get lunches and outfits ready for the clan for tomorrow. Hey, be sure to fill out the online survey about the University Library search features when you have a chance. Goodnight!
Scene Title: Online Survey at BeanBurger This scene takes place at the BeanBurger Restaurant. Summary: The Student types responses to the online survey. On Student s laptop, the online survey is shown. It is the University Library Online Survey. Instructions Question 1 Question 2 Fill in your response and hit the send button once you ve answered both of the questions and have reviewed your responses. Your feedback is greatly appreciated! What information do you need to make the most of the UoPX online library? How do you normally go about finding information you need on the Internet? Relate that to how you expect to do research for your assignments in the future. END OF LEARNSCAPE.
