1 Course: 7 th Grade Math DETAIL LESSON PLAN Wednesday, January 25 / Thursday, January 26 Student Objective (Obj. 3e) TSW use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing length of a side of a right triangle. Lesson 8-7 Pythagorean Theorem Textbook Pages: Homework Mixed Review Sheet (8 problems) Last Night s Homework Angle Worksheet (11 problems) Bellwork Angle quiz. Prior Knowledge During our last class, we learned about the different types of angles. We learned that a right angle has 90. Today, we will be working with a particular type of triangle called a Right Triangle. Anticipatory Set Display transparency What is a Right Triangle Day 1 Display transparency Pythagorean Theorem We will learn how to find the missing length of a side on a RIGHT triangle. To help us, we ll use a special formula called the Pythagorean Theorem! What is the Pythagorean Theorem and how is it used in the real world? Display transparency: What is the Pythagorean Theorem? Display transparency: Find that Right Triangle! Why learn this? Well, if given the length of two sides of a triangle, we can find the missing side by using the Pythagorean Theorem. As seen in our introduction, band directors may need to find the length of the diagonal of a football field in order to determine where to best place band members during a halftime routine! Teacher Input Review bellwork quiz. Review homework. Define right triangle. Explain what the Pythagorean Theorem is and how it is used with right triangles. Display transparencies Find the Right Triangle! to introduce today s lesson on the Pythagorean Theorem. Pass out student notes. Talk about important things to know about Right Triangles. Demonstrate how to find the length of a missing hypotenuse using the Pythagorean Theorem. Guide students through example problem using special scratch paper. Demonstrate how to find the length of a missing leg using the Pythagorean Theorem. Guide students through example problem using special scratch paper. Have students work you try problem. Classwork: 4 problems from PH Reteaching 8-7. (Think, Pair, Share) Extra Practice: 2 reading problems from PH Reteaching 8-7. Homework: Mixed review sheet. Assessment Question students for understanding. Observation students as they work on their classwork. Closure Circle Map: Pythagorean Theorem Buzzzzzzz Words!
