1 Purpose: It is the intention of this to provide a general description of the course, outline the required elements of the course and to lay the foundation for course assessment for the improvement of student learning, as specified by the faculty of Wharton County Junior College, regardless of who teaches the course, the timeframe by which it is instructed, or the instructional method by which the course is delivered. It is not intended to restrict the manner by which an individual faculty member teaches the course but to be an administrative tool to aid in the improvement of instruction. Projects in problem-solving, including press fit, bolted and welded joints, and transmission components. Additionally, production of detail and assembly drawings of machines and threads utilizing tolerances, limit dimensioning and surface finishes. 2 I. Topical Outline: Each offering of this course must include the following topics (be sure to include information regarding lab, practicum, clinical, or other non-lecture instruction). Pictorial Drawings - Create both 2D and D drawings used in the Mechanical Industry Tolerancing - Interpret and apply tolerences on mechanical drawings Use of Measuring Devices - Use calipers and Micrometers to measure mechanical parts Actual Object Drawing - Using in measurements gathered with calipers and micrometers, use CAD software to create working drawings of parts Design Process - Identify steps of the Design Process in order of application Bills of Material - Per drafting standards, generate a B.O.M. on CAD systems and place in standard locations Foundry Pattern Drawing, Data Calculations, manual & computer - Use formulas to calculate developmental lengths of sheet metal objects and apply to drawings Drawing Reproduction - Demonstrate the ability to select proper sheet sizes for mechanical drawings and arrange drawings per drafting standards Weld Symbols - Identify weld symbol ideograph items and apply to reference line; additionally apply weld symbols at weld joints Page 2 of 5

Course Learning Outcomes Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Methods of Assessment: Utilize the steps used in the design process, terminology, mechanical processes to produce drawings. Draw a complete set of plans for O S Motor or similar complex assembly, using Solidworks. Evaluated with a rubric designed for the project to evaluate Accuracy of views Line types Line quality Dimension accuracy and placement Drawing organization Interpret terms used in Tolerancing; Interpret and apply tolerences on mechanical drawings Calculate dimensions of mating parts using Using Tolerance chart, calculated interference and clearance fits; interference, clearance and press fit dimensions for mating parts. Identify thread forms and interpret thread notes; Test questions to identify thread forms and apply thread not to drawing. Use calipers and micrometers for precision measurement; Use calipers and Micrometers to measure mechanical parts to a pre-specified tolerance accuracy. Interpret and draw weld symbols; Test questions to identify weld symbol ideograph features and apply to reference line; additionally apply weld symbols to weld joints The above assignments will be evaluated using the ED Program Rubric. 5 III. Required text(s), optional text(s) and/or materials to be supplied by the student: 1. Required: Technical Drawing by Frederick Giesecke et al 2. Optional: AutoCAD Tutor for Engineering Graphics; by Alan J. Kalameja;. A flash drive is required for archiving data files 4. Note book to store notes and drawings. 20 IV. Suggested course maximum: V. List any specific or physical requirements beyond a typical classroom required to teach the course. Current facilities include 20 computers with CAD 2D and D software and plotters capable of printing 4" x 44" drawings. VI. Course Requirements/Grading System Describe any course specific requirements such as research papers or reading assignments and the generalized grading format for the course. Daily Drawings/Lab Work/Daily Quizzes to assure comprehension of drafting skills 20% Three to Four Major Exams or Drawings covering individual topics 0% Dimension Post-Test 10% Research Paper 10% Final Design Project 0% = A; = B = C; = D Below 60 = F Based on the above breakdown, grades will be awarded as prescribed by Wharton County Junior College Standards VII.
