THE GRID - Thesis on Architectural Visualization FALL SPRING 2014 THE GRID stemmed from a realization that, as any design firm will always have a digital model of a project and that the digital realm will never stop growing as a part of design, architects must take every step available to maximize the tools that already exist to produce the best possible digital experience before the project goes into construction. The final book on ISSUU: 1. Final presentation setup in Miller Gallery 2. Graphics card used for the visualizations 3. Video strip of user interaction 4. CryEngine running THE GRID 2
1. Closeup of the folded material 2. View of the entire system installed 3. The operable winch mechanism 4. Render of several sunshades HIKARI Sunshade Spring 2014 This was a collaboration with another student, Sam Sanders, that focused on acquiring environmental data, strengthening design and application skills, and applying advanced construction methodologies to make a working, long-lasting system. The ultimate aim was to produce a functional and easily replicable, non-invasive solar shading unit for the windows of CFA 200, the main architectural studio for the fourth and fifth years. 3
Parametric Modeling in Grasshopper FALL 2013 Parametric Modeling was a course that integrated Grasshopper and Rhinoceros. The Grasshopper explorations featured advanced uses of its components as well as some basic scripting. The second half of the course focused on making a parametrically defined shape in one of the campus buildings. 1. Self-intersecting Möbius strip 2. Grid spacing affected by an attractor 3. Module replacement and deformation 4. Parametric shape with an illusion 4
Cornerstone Outlook Community Center FALL 2012 A collaborative project with a team of four others to design a community center for Action Housing development as part of the Issues of Practice class headed by John Folan. We produced a 139-page book detailing various aspects of the entire design, from site studies to plans to renders to construction implementation. The book is available on ISSUU below: 1. Exploded detail of a custom door 2. Section through the entire project 3. View from the street corner 4. Lawn area with activities 5
ENCLOSURE Materials and Assembly SPRING 2011 A collaborative project with a studio team to design an enclosure out of plywood and zip ties that allows for passage through in one direction. This construction was able to be assembled and disassembled in only a few hours. It was assembled in the Great Hall of the CFA building on the CMU campus. 1. View of entire enclosure isolated 2. Detail of exterior joinery 3. Detail of interior and zip ties 4. Oculus from the interior 6
BioLogic: Jellyfish Explorations FALL 2012 A collaborative project with a team of four others to explore material and mechanical connections between the leg of a frog and a jellyfish. The focus shifted towards the jellyfish and through many iterations we analyzed the motion of a Jellyfish, applying it to real architectural applications. 1. Sketch of frog leg motion and position 2. Nitinol, a flexible material, study 3. Still of an animation of application 4. Render of application wall 7
1. Diagram of the storage unit design 2. Diagrams of chairs with variations 3. Photo of storage units in place 4. Photo of chairs and tables in place Studio: ECS Classroom FALL 2012 A collaborative project with a studio team to design furniture for a 7th grade classroom at the Environmental Charter School in Pittsburgh. We designed storage units out of the old desks, new tables with write-able surfaces and new large chairs for the students. 8
Studio: GRASP Alternative School SPRING 2012 An alternative school in East Liberty, Pittsburgh. It is organized into three volumes - clock-making, a service core, and plant-growing. The project focused on construction and detailing, injecting spatial and experiential elements into a design driven by believable composition. 1. Ground floor plan showing train track 2. Photo of model with accurate site 3. Section through volumes and train 4. Sectional cutout render 9
1. Section through learning space 2. Site plan showing parking and paths 3. Photo of model near learning entrance 4. Render of exterior plant lab Studio: REVEAL Environmental Center FALL 2011 An environmental center in Frick Park, Pittsburgh. This environmental center highlighted the true problem of trash in the park as it accumulates along the rivers and streams in the park. It was split into two programs, a public and a learning space. 10
Studio: MOVING MEMORY Film Archive FALL 2010 A film archive in Oakland, Pittsburgh. This film archive utilized a mechanical storage system to store the film around the spaces of the archive. The storage medium reflected the nature of the film strip, placing the film into the frames of the archive. 1. Long section showing the archive 2. Aerial render next to the museum 3. Front elevation showing both floors 4. Interior render of the gallery 11
1. Projector and Speaker setup 2. Entire installation near the UC 3. Detail of rope connection 4. In-progress construction Kobayashi Maru: Through Staccato Membrane SPRING 2012 An abstract project consisting of generated sound and an installation in the University Center of Carnegie Mellon University. The project explored motion through immobility and the disassociation of a place from its space. 12
Serious Sam Forever Project Prophets-of-Sam was an international group of fans of the video game series Serious Sam created by Croteam that began work on recreating the first game in the series using the engine of the second game. I worked on a few levels for the project as well as models and a video trailer, seen below. 1. The same area: after and before 2. Exterior of dense suburbs area 3. Interior of a multi-level tomb 4. Progress on the interior of a temple 13
