3 01. Palo Bonito, Palo Spring 2015 Las Flores, Barranquilla, Colombia Professor: Adib Cure Partner: Ana Guaracao After visiting Las Flores we became inspired by the unique self-made fabric found in this informal settlement. From the perspective of walking through the streets we identified that houses were the predominant structure that made up the urban fabric of this settlement, thus we decided to develop a modified housing strategy for the residents. Using the high quality drone images from our site trip we discovered that the majority of open space could be found directly behind the existing homes in the center of the blocks rather than fronting the streets. This limited open space was often taken over by the expansion of existing homes or other forms of misuse. As a strategy to reclaim this open space and deter its misuse, we developed a framework that can be applied to a variety of open spaces and creates a way for the residents to expand in a positive way. Based off of the customary act of residents placing posts to establish ownership of land, we placed columns along a 12 grid. By placing these columns we created a formal framework within which the informal could expand. Our columns became elements that would dictate the function of each space and would satisfy different human needs. Palo Habitable-satisfies the need for shelter. Palo de Agua- satisfies the need for water and sanitation. Palo lluminante- satisfies the need for play, interaction, safety, and light. Palo Verde- satisfies the need for shade, food, and revenue. These four elements can be combined to create different schemes for self-sustaining communities inside these blocks. Our framework maintains adequate depths & widths in order for these spaces to have access to light, ventilation, water, shelter and food. This creates more adequate living conditions within each house and block for both the existing and future. 4 5

13 02. UMSOA Coffee Kiosk Design/Build Studio Fall 2014 Professor: Rocco Ceo & Jim Adamson Partners: Design Build Studio The Billy Goat The goal of this studio was to design and construct a mobile coffee kiosk for the School of Architecture. The studio went through a process of design charrettes that culminated in the final design of the structure. The Billy Goat stands at close to 14 feet tall on a 6-1/2 by 6-1/2 foot base. The structure is made of western red cedar louvers. As a studio we wanted to create a structure that would serve as an icon to the School of Architecture. By exaggerating the height of the kiosk we created a tower that would be visible throughout campus. The louvered walls allow air flow and create a comfortable space inside the kiosk. By allowing three of the four sides to fold down and create counters for serving coffee, the kiosk would become a hub for social interaction in the Architecture Courtyard. By night when lit from the inside, light pours through the louvers and The Billy Goat becomes a lantern or beacon for Architecture students

20 03. The Dovetail Bench Furniture Studio Fall 2014 Professor: Austin Matheson Material: Peruvian Walnut/Teak Oil We began this course by studying precedent examples by furniture greats such as Sam Maloof, Greene and Greene, Ray and Charles Eames, and George Nakashima. I was instantly drawn to Nakashima and the way in which he juxtaposition-ed the natural form of a live edge piece of wood with the rigid simplistic form of his joinery. Without any previous training in furniture making or design and a project description that allowed the creation of any piece of furniture that would fit within our designated workspaces, I wanted to create a piece that would be both functional and ornamental. I decided to create a bench. Inspired by Nakashima and his use of the dovetail joint, I decided to contradict the theoretically simplistic design of a bench by celebrating its joinery through the use of oversized dovetails. Using Peruvian Walnut I created a simple bench with two 17 rectangular legs joined by 2-1/2 dovetails to a seat top 14 in width and 50 in length. A cross member joined on either end to the rectangular legs by a through wedge tenon lends additional support. The piece is finished in teak oil

23 04. Miami Intermodal Center Spring 2013 Miami, FL Professor: Steve Fett The unique site that characterized this project was a small plot of land hugging the edges of a narrow slip just north of the American Airlines Arena in downtown Miami. The project s program called for the design of an Intermodal Center that could accommodate several forms of travel including pedestrian, bus, taxi cabs, water taxis, and sea planes. Having three separate sides surrounding the long narrow slip, the site became very disconnected and geometric. Additionally, each of the three separate sides of the site were bordered by iconic local venues including, the American Airlines Arena, Biscayne Boulevard, and Museum Park. By positioning my Intermodal Center on the south side of the slip aside the American Airlines Arena I was able to enhance the intermodal aspect of the project and reconnect the different forms of travel. Additionally, by creating a promenade winding around all three sides of the slip, pedestrians were provided an interactive means to enjoy the surrounding attractions of downtown Miami

26 05. Miami Fish Market Spring 2012 Miami, FL Professor: Rachel Valbrun Partners: Nicole Ferrarini + Jackie Hagen The objective of this project was to design a Fish Market that would re-engage the surrounding community with both the local product, fish, and the immediate context, Lummus Park. Through research and precedent study of local fish markets, my group and I became inspired by the overall process of a typical fish market. By separating our market into three distinct sections, preparation of the fish for the market, the market itself, and a restaurant, we were able to engage the public in the process of catch to table of local fish. Our market became open air when the large louvered doors were lifted and visitors were able to respond to both the river to one side and the urban setting to the other. Additionally, the restaurant opened onto a public community garden where locals were able to enjoy the unique setting along the river and engage in the process themselves
