Design Statement Just as soul depicts the character of man, architecture portrays the character of functional space. Architecture is an art that instills space with depth and temperament in ways that enhance the overall experience of the space. This experience parallels that of a pure soul; delineating freedom, openness, and simplicity. Architecture has the potential to separate an area from its surrounding world. An environment that objectifies freedom, openness, and simplicity can transform the harsh and hectic into comfortable and calm. In this way architecture can cleanse and purify. -Nicole Geier

The Autumn building is designed to engage the environment. The Autumn building relates to the area around it, which is located in Vermont. Vermont has many farms with different types of barns.
5 Preliminary Sketches To create a design where one gets a feeling of the concept of a hayloft To create opening in front as in a hayloft Big window in front to create openness compared to the openness in a hayloft Added railing to create openness to stairs below Makes room feel bigger Stairs wrap around to the side Corner window for more light inside building Low to see outside view when sitting Back façade of building
Final Sketches 6 To create a space where one can get away to study or relax Idea of the Hayloft Used elements from a barn to give the façade and structure a more barn feeling Desk Design to look like a wagon Created a barn door in back of building for air circulation and to open and look at the surroundings Low Sloped Ceiling More sloped to one side to force one to sit look down at the desk Still has a pitched roof as one would see in a barn Half Glass Roof to allow less intense sunlight Open to stairs below Gives more of a hayloft feeling Outside façade designed to show the structure of the building Barn Door Like
7 Construction Post and Beam Construction Found in most typical Barn Construction 8 x8 Posts and Beams Use of Solid Vertical Beams as supports and then cross Beams attached to the top Use of Maple and Cherry Wood Commonly found in Vermont Use of Maple brings out the structure more due to the lighter color of it compared to cherry Roof in Model Placed stairs in front to create a more open feeling as one would experience in a Hayloft

Winter building is designed to engage the environment. The Winter building relates to the area around it, which is located in Vermont. Vermont has many farms with different types of barns.
11 Sketches Roof designed to express the idea of a snow drift. Like the Snow is taking over the building Idea of a abandoned barn
Design 12 Idea of a barn Idea of a abandoned barn -Building looks like its tipping over on top of the ground -Below the ground building is square and once inside it opens up into a big space. -Gives a feeling one is walking into a small building but it continues underground into a bigger space Post and Beam Construction Trusses support diagonal posts Siding and Aluminum metal ( in the inside of building) also support structure 8 x8 posts and beams Use of Maple wood for the structure and Cherry wood for siding Aluminum Metal in the interior and for the roof Aluminum metal is white and in construction it can be bent and curved in different ways The roof makes building look smaller than it really is One would slide down into the space, as if one was to do in a snow fort As one reaches the bottom of the slide, from floor to ceiling the height is 12-15ft Aluminum metal in the interior gives a feeling that snow is inside the building
13 Model Top/Left: View of front facade Top/Right: Top view of building Bottom/Left: Side view of building, showing the slant of the building Bottom/Right: View of whole building without being in ground. Gives a perspective of the height of the building
