2 IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ The Next Pin Series PCC Bill Smith The current pin series, Animals & Trains is scheduled to run until June 2018, and those of you who have been supportive of this series are being queried as to your thoughts about a new series. Although the current series has not been as popular as some in the past, it has provided the vehicle for those of us who enjoy trading our pins with Lions all over the country and in places like Canada, England and Australia. More importantly, the series pins are often the one single factor that makes the many pin swaps as successful as they are. If you take away the series, or as some would suggest, take a break for a year or so, my question is what would you do at the various swaps. Most of those who suggest this are not presently involved in the current series and many have not ever taken too much interest in the previous series. The idea that a break would give us an opportunity to get caught up or give us an opportunity to concentrate on looking for pins to fill the gaps in our collection, are just simply not realistic. Taking such a break would almost assure that after the initial few hours at a pin swap, the activity would slow to a deadly pace and would invite early exits. The overall effect would be that many would not consider it smart to spend the money it takes to attend these events just to walk up and down the aisles trying to find that hard-to-get pin that might help one to fill in a gap or two in their collections. Their continued support for the swaps would obviously wane and that, my friends, could be the beginning of the end of one of the most successful activities of the pin trading community. Okay, I ve had my say and it should be obvious that I am a huge fan of the series pins. Some could argue it s because I am the publisher of the catalogs that document the pins in the series and automatically get a free pin from everyone. If you could see my checkbook covering just one year, you would quickly see that there is NOTHING free in pin trading. I buy far more pins than I get in return and I m glad to do so. This hobby has literally kept me going and given me something to do and to look forward to. I trust that many of you feel the same way. All of this leads up to my suggestion for those of you who enjoy the series collections as much as I do to give some thought to what would make a good subject for the next series. We can t wait until the present one is finished because it takes some time to switch over at the conclusion of one series to the next one. Keep in mind that the subject MUST have an appeal for many and not just for those in a particular geographical area. In this connection, I have already received a number of suggestions and the one that really stands out is a series called Water World. The Water World series would encompass all things dealing with surface and below surface items such as commercial and private fishing of all kinds and all the items that make fishing one of the most popular activities in the world. It would include items, just to mention a few, sail boats, fishing boats, submarines, and fish and water creatures of all kinds. It would NOT include military surface ships and vessels since we have already featured those in a prior series. I believe you would agree that Water World would provide us with sufficient subjects for our pins over a two year period of time. However, if you have a subject that you feel would be the equal to or even better than Water World, now is the time to speak up. I would like to be able to announce the new series in January of 2018 as this would give those who are responsible for planning future issues within their respective pin trading clubs sufficient time to plan ahead for a starting date of 1 July Please send your thoughts and/or ideas to me by (tabs52@comcast.net) or to my home address at 3643 Osborne Drive, Warrenton VA I will need your input by 31 December 2017.
