4 In 1995, award-winning luxury resort Soneva Fushi set the standard for all desert island barefoot luxury hideaways in the Maldives. Located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi pairs Robinson Crusoe fantasy with intelligent luxury. 6 INTRODUCTION TO SONEVA ART AND GLASS Welcome to the first and only hot glass studio in the Maldives. Operating a resort on a remote island, we routinely ship significant amounts of materials and supplies to the island so that we can offer our guests exceptional services and exquisite culinary delights in our celebrated restaurants. Once these products are consumed however, another challenge emerges: What do we do with the waste materials like glass bottles from wine, beer, liquor, etc?

We then use a variety of methods, such as blowing, casting, and slumping to create many

7 WE UPCYCLE The Soneva solution to glass recycling is to take on the entire process ourselves. We begin by crushing the glass and melting it in our state of the art furnace. We then use a variety of methods, such as blowing, casting, and slumping to create many extraordinary items. These glass rods are used to infuse glass pieces with stunning colours.

Working with the Chefs at each of our restaurants we generate designs that celebrate the experience of art and food through their shared roots in culture and tradition. 10 SONEVA SLAB BOWLS Our Slab Bowls signature pattern is made using hot glass strips. These are flattened and layered on the base glass to create the woven, basketlike, final product.

11 SONEVA CRACKLE GLASS Each piece of our Crackle Glass is temporarily submerged in water, creating the unique crackle pattern. No two pieces are ever alike, each one as detailed as a fingerprint.

12 SONEVA OPTIC WAVE VASES To create our visually mesmerising Optic Wave Vases, molten glass is wrapped around a flattened spherical base vase, creating the rippling waves.

13 SONEVA BUBBLE GLASSES AND SCENT BOTTLES To make our Bubble Glasses baking soda is added to the molten glass, starting a chemical reaction that creates the trapped bubbles of air within the finished pieces. This same technique is used to make our beautiful Scent Bottles.

14 SONEVA BUD VASES We use blown cylinders that are then spot heated and manipulated to create the twisted section of our Bud Vases. The vases come in an array of colours, perfect for displaying a spray of small flowers or a single flower.

Our experienced team will share with you all the skills you need to create your very own glass art piece to take home. Children as young as 5 years old have the chance to try the fascinating art of glass blowing.

17 FEATURED ARTIST PROGRAM Every year we invite between three to five amazing artists from around the world to join us at Soneva Fushi. They collaborate with our glass team to create unique artwork that is shown in our Soneva Gallery for everyone to admire. Come watch the Masters at work!

18 MAESTRO LINO TAGLIAPIETRA AT SONEVA ART & GLASS Maestro Lino Tagiapietra was invited to help us launch the Soneva Art and Glass Programme in December of The breathtaking sculptures created during this time were displayed in an exhibition in Soneva s Art Gallery. These works are the only existing artworks by Lino Tagliapietra to have been created from recycled waste glass. Each artwork is signed by the artist and inscribed Soneva Fushi, forever linking the works to our resort; making this series of works extremely rare.

19 FLAVIE AUDI AT SONEVA ART & GLASS Flavie Audi is a rapidly rising star the in the art world, from Europe to the Middle East and beyond. She uses materials such as glass and stone to create ethereal sculptures that emanate a sense of weightlessness and suspension.

20 TOBIAS MØHL AT SONEVA ART & GLASS Tobias Møhl is a renowned Danish glass artist whose work focuses on sculptural forms that are clearly informed by the lineage of functional glass vessels. Although his complex visual patterns can be traced to the techniques of the Venetians, his abstract references to nature and subtle palette set him apart. Møhl s work is included in the collections of museums in New York, Hamburg, Copenhagen and other public and private collections in the United States and Europe.

21 MARIA KOSHENKOVA AT SONEVA ART & GLASS Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia, Maria Koshenkova uses glass with other materials such as wax, wood, ceramic tiles, concrete and drawings to create art pieces that establish concrete and fragile equilibriums between what is real and abstract, defined only by its own form. Koshenkova also strives to show the propensity for violence and the need for harmony as the two pillars of what it means to be human, with glass emphasising this fragile balance of our nature. Since 2006, her works have been exhibited internationally, including in major exhibitions of contemporary glass in Europe and in the United States.

22 HOWARD BEN TRE AT SONEVA ART & GLASS Howard Ben Tre is a pioneer in the use of cast glass as a sculptural medium, he has won critical acclaim for his unique sculptures and large scale works of art for public and private spaces. The handmade wooden patterns and forms used to create these works were originally crafted by Howard in 1977, and were the first forms that the sculptor ever realised in cast glass.

23 MARTIN JANECKY AT SONEVA ART & GLASS Martin Janecky began his career in glass at the age of 13, and has since risen to the top of the glass art world with his unique ability to marry traditional glass blowing techniques with the modeling techniques of classical sculpture.

24 JAMES DEVEREUX AND LOUIS THOMPSON James Devereux and Louis Thompson first started working together in 2009 at the Royal College of Art in London when James became the hot glass technician and Louis was completing his Masters degree. 25 PAUL MARIONI AND RICHARD MEITNER A founding member of the American Studio Glass movement, Paul Marioni is an internationally recognised artist known for his ingenuity and his willingness to push the traditional limits of art. In his work Meitner looks to surprise, to challenge the viewer to question what he or she is viewing. Magic, he says, is a moment in which something happens that does not fit into your belief system. Paul and Richard will be visiting Soneva Fushi from March 15 through April 6, 2018.
