PAIRED
VINCENT VAN GOGH Pair of shoes[edit] Van Gogh made Pair of Shoes (F255) from a pair of boots he purchased at a flea market. He wore the boots on an extended rainy walk to create the effect he wished for this painting, which may have been a tribute to the working man. The Van Gogh Museum speculates that they may also be symbolic for Van Gogh of his "difficult passage through life."[53] Of his walking through mud to make the shoes look more worn and dirty, Van Gogh was known to say "Dirty shoes and roses can both be good in the same way."[54]
AMERICAN GOTHIC American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wood's inspiration came from what is now known as the American Gothic House, and his decision to paint the house along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house." Painted in 1930, it depicts a farmer standing beside a woman that has been interpreted to be either his wife or his daughter.[1][2] The figures were modeled by Wood's sister, Nan Wood Graham, and Wood and Graham's dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron evoking 19th-century Americana, and the man is holding a pitchfork. The plants on the porch of the house are mother-in-law's tongue and beefsteak begonia, which are the same plants as in Wood's 1929 portrait of his mother, Woman with Plants.
KATE MALONE Kate Malone Potter Kate Malone is a British studio potter, ceramic artist and judge, along with Keith Brymer Jones, on BBC2 s The Great Pottery Throw Down presented by Sara Cox. Malone is known for her large sculptural vessels and rich, bright glazes.
GILBERT AND GEORGE Gilbert Prousch,[1][2] sometimes referred to as Gilbert Proesch[3][4][5] (born 17 September 1943 in San Martin de Tor, Italy) andgeorge Passmore (born 8 January 1942 in Plymouth, United Kingdom) are two artists who work together as a collaborative duo called Gilbert & George. They are known for their distinctive and highly formal appearance and manner and also for their brightly coloured graphic-style photo-based artworks.
DIANE ARBUS Diane Arbus was an American photographer and writer noted for photographs of marginalized people dwarfs, giants, transgender people, nudists, circus performers and others whose normality was perceived by the general populace as ugly or surreal.
GRANVILLE DAVEY Davey's work is influenced by the work of sculptors such as Tony Cragg and Richard Deacon and shows a similar interest in industrial materials. The simplicity of his forms shows an affinity with minimalism. Many of his works make references to everyday objects which if exhibited in themselves would be readymades. Button, a metre and a half wide clothes button made in steel, is a typical early work. Later works, such as Gold (Table) (a table as tall as a human) are larger in size. Primarily a sculptor, Davey produced a series of 12 prints with five other artists including etchings and screenprints.[3]
SOPHIE HARLEY Celebrated throughout the world for her exquisitely designed handmade jewellery collections, Sophie produces a range of unique contemporary pieces that have created a cult following. Sophie Harley also creates unique and luxurious fine bespoke jewellery using beautiful and unusual diamonds and precious stones. This exclusive bespoke jewellery design service is by private appointment only in the studio.
