2 Reuben Colley Reuben Colley was born in Birmingham, and grew up in Hodge Hill. Birmingham and the West Midlands have provided a constant source of inspiration. Sutton Park is a haven of natural beauty, encompassing woodland, wide open spaces and pools. Reuben Colley has created a range of paintings and drawings capturing the tranquillity of Sutton Park across the seasons. The paintings, with their loose and impressionistic brushwork, show Colley at his most confident and spontaneous. The drawings are tiny masterpieces, meticulously detailed.

4 Rick Garland Rick Garland trained as a fine art illustrator, and had his first one-man exhibition in He is inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, and in his work he pays minute attention to detail. Many of Garland s recent paintings brilliantly portray water and the way in which light is reflected in it.

6 Mark Godwin Mark Godwin was born in Birmingham and began his artistic career as a printmaker. His recent work explores the concept of the sublime. With his expressive brushwork and bold use of form and colour, Godwin captures the overwhelming power and beauty of landscape, focusing particularly on the meeting of land and sea. What we see in these paintings can depend upon our own expectations and life experience, and even upon our mood.

8 Mircea Teleaga Mircea Teleaga s evocative paintings are inspired by the history of his native Romania. He writes: I am interested in exploring the history of certain places and seeing how that history could be shown in a painting without the use of narrative. This interest appeared when I started finding out that places very familiar and close to me served as both spectator and stage for very problematic issues regarding twentieth century history.

10 Simon Hennessey Hyper-realist painter Simon Hennessey was born in Birmingham, and still lives and works in his native city. He uses a camera to gather information for his paintings. He then adds or removes details, and changes depth, texture and colour to arrive at the finished work. Hennessey writes: This allows me to create an illusion of a reality not seen in any single photographic source, and my paintings therefore appear clearer and more distinct than a photograph.

12 Morgan Howell Morgan Howell recreates classic paper-sleeve 45 rpm singles in a giant format. Howell uses mixed media to create his three-dimensional works of art. The paper sleeves are constructed from canvas, hand-painted and then distressed in order to reproduce every scuff and tear on the original object. Each of these artworks is a celebration, not just of the golden age of vinyl, but also of the personal memories evoked by treasured discs repeatedly handled and played.

14 Danny Howes Danny Howes sees himself as a story teller. His paintings combine the real and the imagined, creating tantalising images which invite the viewer to question what has just happened, and what might happen next. Howes draws inspiration from his immediate surroundings in Birmingham, and the fascinating and culturally diverse people who populate the city.

16 Tony Karpinksi Tony Karpinski specialised in wildlife painting for many years. Recently, he has been inspired by the hustle and bustle of city life, both in the UK and in India. Karpinski has an unfailing eye for composition, and employs a loose and spontaneous style to capture people going about their daily lives. In contrast, Tony Karpinski s classical nudes are painted in a photorealist style.

18 Horace Panter Horace Panter identifies Pop Art and religious icons as his primary influences. He is also known for his role as bassist with the band The Specials and it was their tours of America that inspired the Americana collection. In these stunning paintings, Panter explores the American dream. Diners, motels and cars, set against a cloudless sky in glaring sunlight, are transformed by Panter into icons of American life.

20 Annette Pugh Annette Pugh sources her imagery from a range of archives, and her subjects and locations are at once both familiar and anonymous. She uses various media to investigate how and when a photograph becomes more than just a copy. Drawing upon the lives and aspirations of the working classes, Annette uses original photographic sources to create new narratives, imbued with a powerful sense of place.

22 Michael Talbot The inspiration for Talbot s work has always been the poetry of the human form. He works from live models, and draws his ideas from myth, theatre, dance and illusion. Talbot first creates the sculpture in clay and then casts it in bronze. Each sculpture has a unique finish and patina.

24 Andy Warhol Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh in 1928, and worked as a commercial artist in New York during the 1950s. Obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture and mechanical reproduction, Warhol created some of the most iconic images of the 20 th century. Warhol s portfolio of Marilyn portraits raises questions about the nature of celebrity, drawing attention to Monroe s artificially-constructed public persona.
