Art classes for Children, Teens & Adults WEEK 1 (July 7 11) Real Animals and Fantasy Creatures with Kelly Bogucz. Ages July 7 11, 9:30AM 12:30PM Even fantastical creatures are based on real animals. Learn about rendering form, musculature, limbs, fur and feathers of real animals. Then apply these basics as you draw, color, and paint your own versions of werewolves, griffins, chupacabras, and more! Let your imagination soar! Bring sketchbook! Collage Native America with Abby McBride. Ages 10+. July 7 11, 9:30AM 12:30PM Create mixed media collages inspired by Native American art and artifacts. Exploring the pieces in the museum's collection as well as the visiting exhibit of contemporary Native American pottery, and taking inspiration from myths, legends and stories, create beautiful, meaningful collages. Students will use a variety of materials, including tempera paint, colored papers, water color, oil pastels, pencil and ink. Drawing In and Around the Museum with Nina Nemeth. Ages July 7 11, 1 4PM Practice drawing in different locations around the museum galleries! Learn about line, shading, value, and perspective. You will explore current museum exhibits and objects, and render drawings using these elements and various methods such as cross-hatch, stipple, and positive-negative space, in various mediums. 2 WEEK 2 (July 14 18) Eco Art with Kelly Bogucz. Ages July 14 18, 9:30AM 12:30PM Explore the benefits of being green. Learn about animals, endangered and common, and the environments where they live. Find out why protecting the Earth's rain forests makes a difference to the whole world. Create pictures in a variety of mediums, make a bird feeder, construct and paint a birdhouse, and design a t-shirt while you learn about the benefits of helping the natural environment! Museum members $180 / Non-members $200 / $10 supply fee Drawing Value and Texture with Caitlin Albright. Ages 10+. July 14 18, 9:30AM 12:30PM In this class we will explore different natural environments ranging from the earth to the sky. With a strong focus on value, students will develop their understanding of form and texture while also creating dynamic compositions. We will draw on inspiration from our immediate surroundings on the grounds of the museum, as well as references from Ansel Adams and several contemporary artists. Students will work in charcoal and graphite. Museum members $180 / Non-members $200 / Supply list Summer Stories: Drawings and Words with Abby McBride. Ages July 14 18, 1 4PM Have you ever noticed how much a picture in a storybook can tell you? Looking at illustrations in various books and art on exhibit in the museum for inspiration, learn to illustrate a story in pencil and watercolor. Add poetry or prose to create your own summer story. 3 WEEK 3 (July 21 25) 3-D Art with Patricia Flaherty. Ages July 21 25, 9:30AM 12:30PM Sculpture and other objects in and around the museum will provide inspiration for exploring and creating in various cultural traditions. Use clays to form objects by hand. Explore paper fibers, foam core, cardboard, wood or Styrofoam, and wire! Learn to design and build for balance in three dimensions, while letting your imagination take off! Museum members $180 / Non-members $200 / $10 supply fee Elements of Design with Nina Nemeth. July 21 25, 1-4PM Learn the foundations of visual arts line, shape, color, and value, using a variety of mediums such as colored pencil, water color, acrylics, and textured paper. Work your way around the museum, investigating textiles, animals, dinosaur bones, paintings, and other treasures! Take home your personal interpretation of what you saw at the museum each day. Mosaics with Eleanor Parr-DiLeo. Ages 8+. Mon Thurs: July 21 24, 1 4PM Learn about mosaics and the special tools and the techniques to create a piece of art using this ancient medium. Make a design, draw and experiment with color palette and mixed mediums. Then use your design to make your mosaic:cutting the tiles, placement of the pieces, and gluing and grouting to complete the project. Museum members $145 / Non-members $160 / $20 supply fee

4 WEEK 4 (July 28 August 1) Drawing from Nature with Karen Fuchs. Ages July 28 August 1, 9:30AM 12PM Explore the world around you as artist, designer, scientist and naturalist. Observe and draw the forms and patterns found in nature such as spiral, branching, radial, mesh. Each day we will focus on one form to be explored, sketched, and a related 3D art project created via different mediums. Observe the relationships between natural and man-made and explore the design concepts of repetition, proportion and symmetry. Museum members $180 / Non-members $200 / $10 supply fee The Many Ways of Monoprinting with Nina Nemeth. Ages July 28 August 1, 9:30AM 12:30PM Learn the medium of printmaking as we discover different techniques for creating one-of-a-kind prints. We will use various objects, both found and from nature, to learn the process of creating prints. We will also learn techniques for colored pencil and paints to further enhance our unique pieces of art. Bring a sketchbook! July 28 August 1, 9:30AM 12:30PM Learn about the tradition of painting out of doors that was popular among European and American artists. Practice sketching around the grounds of the museum. Learn about perspective of various shapes and color mixing from the primary colors. Find out how to choose your composition from the very large outdoors. Ages July 28 August 1, 1 4PM Connect with the natural world through sketching, drawing, painting and poetry. Make your own sketchbook and fill it with drawing and paintings, taking inspiration from painted landscapes, as well as the natural world outside. The Great Graffiti Expedition with Kelly Bogucz. Ages 11+. July 28 August 1, 1 4PM Explore the history and culture of graffiti art from around the world and practice your own imaginative letter art forms and figures. Have fun creating unique letter art in scratch board, on a T-shirt, and on the cover of a sketchbook. You will be happily surprised to find all sorts of graffiti cultures, styles, and endless possibilities to inform your own style.

5 WEEK 5 (August 4 8) Techniques of the Great Artists with Nina Nemeth. Ages 5-9. August 4 8, 9:30AM 12:30PM Create art inspired by the styles and techniques of the world's major art movements. We will look at a sampling of the world's art by focusing on the art movements which arose as artists developed new techniques and perspectives. Examine various artists' works, and see how they influenced each other. Create your own works of art in those styles, with water color, acrylic, pastel, collage and mixed media. Museum members $180 / Non-members $200 / $8 supply fee Exotic World: Endangered Animals in Art with Kelly Bogucz. Ages 10+. August 4 8, 9:30AM 12:30PM From bears and bats, to African elephants and rhinos, to Chinese alligators and Australian sea turtles study the foundations of drawing properly proportioned animals, how to realistically render their hide or fur, and other features of their unique selves. Learn about what or who endangers them, and how they have been depicted in art, past and present. Create art with these animals as your subject using various mediums and techniques. Mosaics with Eleanor Parr-DiLeo. Ages 5-7. Mon Thurs: August 4 7, 1 3:30PM Learn about mosaics and the techniques for creating pieces of art using this ancient medium. Create designs, draw and experiment with colors and mixed mediums. Then make your mosaic designs on a treasure box and a 10 square mirror. Ages August 11 15, 9:30AM 12:30PM Learn to draw and paint proportional portraits taking inspiration from your own face and portraits in the museum's collection. Create imaginative portraits using pen, ink and watercolor. Mythical Cultures with Kelly Bogucz. Ages 11+. August 11 15, 9:30AM 12:30PM Hone your skills of the formal elements of art line, shape, value, color, composition while exploring the art and meaning of beings from the world's ancient mythical cultures. Ancient Egyptian gods, African deities, sea monsters, Chinese foo dogs, and the elusive chupacabra! Depict your ancient beings in a variety of mediums. Drawing and Beyond with Kelly Bogucz. Museum members $180 / Non-members $200 / $10 supply fee Once-A-Week Classes for Teens (12+) to Adults Representational Drawing with Ed Potters. 6 Mondays, July 7 August 11, 1 4PM This class is designed for students who have a basic knowledge of drawing. Class will focus on the primary principals of drawing line, composition, form, subject and point of view. We will begin by examining simple line or contour drawing, eventually advancing to hyper realistic renderings of still life and portraits. Each student will have the opportunity to discuss his or her process with the class, sparking conversation about what each artist s work means to him. 7 Mixed Drawing with Laurie Harden. 6 Tuesdays, July 8 August 12, 9:30 11:30AM Learn the ins & outs of drawing a variety of subjects. Draw the Morris Museum building interiors to study lines and perspective. Practice with still-life to render the look of 3-D through value and shadow. On the last day of class, draw from a live model. Clothed model. Museum members $145 / non-members $160 / Supply list Introduction to Oil Painting with Laurie Harden. 6 Fridays, July 11 August 15, 9:30AM 12PM Learn the basics of oil painting. Composition will be covered while working on a still-life. Make objects appear 3-dimensional using lights, mid-tones & shadows. Learn to mix colors while color theory is discussed. Saturday, July 26, 10AM 4PM Have fun making jewelry as you learn how to work with wire to form connecting links for showcasing sparkling Swarovski Crystals. Make it the perfect size for your wrist. Tools will be available to use in class or bring your own to work independently. All levels welcome.
