4 Landscape Art Nowadays, landscape is a very popular subject-matter in art but it has not always been highly valued. Landscape was traditionally considered lower in status than portraiture, which customers would pay much more for. However, it is difficult to paint a successful landscape as it is very hard to capture a 3D view in 2D. In the past, rules of perspective, use of colour and effective compositions were all things that had to be experimented with. Painting landscapes presented a great challenge to artists and many rose to that challenge making it an important genre in its own right.
5 Master of Frankfurt Lamentation over Christ, Early 16th Century Landscape painting was not produced in its own right at this time with early Renaissance painters presenting landscape as a backdrop to religious scenes and portraits.
6 Claude Lorrain Landscape with Apollo and the Muses 17th Century By the 17th century people no longer wanted Catholic artwork and many artists turned to painting the flat, recognisable landscape.
7 Giovanni Antonio Canaletto Canale Grande i kościól Santa Maria della Salute 18th Century The 18th century 'Grand Tour' involved many rich young people touring Europe visiting places famed for their art and architecture. They would often buy souvenirs, paintings depicting ruined or intact architecture.
8 Gustave Courbet Bald Rock in the Valley of Ornans 19th Century One of the most important developments in the history of landscape painting was the invention of photography. New equipment meant artists started to create spontaneous paintings outside.
9 Alfred Wallis Saltash 20th Century and Beyond As the world becomes more built up, urban landscapes feature more heavily in landscape painting, as well as artwork which reflects the change to landscapes caused by industrialisation and population growth.
10 Landscape Art Landscape art is the depiction in art of landscapes or natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers and forests. Landscape painting often has a wide view, with its elements arranged into a clear composition.

12 Vincent Van Gogh Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter whose work, notable for its beauty, emotion and colour, highly influenced 20th century art. He struggled with mental illness, and remained poor and virtually unknown throughout his life. Van Gogh died in France on July 29, 1890, at age 37, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

32 Hundertwasser Hundertwasser was born on 15th December 1928 in Vienna, Austria. He became one of the best-known contemporary Austrian artists by the end of the 20th century. Hundertwasser produced many different types of works of art (ranging from paintings, postage stamps, clothes, flags).
33 His work often includes bright colours, natural forms, spirals and he rarely used straight lines. He also became interested in architecture and he designed many houses using irregular forms and bold use of colour.
