1 Reclining, Alexander Archipenko, 1922, marble, 17 5/8 x 11 1/2 x 11 1/4 in. archipenko A Modern Traveling Exhibitions
2 archipenko A Modern Alexander Archipenko and his art Archipenko was a leading force in French Cubism, Italian Futurism and German Expressionism, as well as with organizations including the Section d or, Der Sturm and the Société Anonyme. His art is celebrated internationally. Archipenko: A Modern offers a fresh assessment of Alexander Archipenko, emphasizing the artist s European and American practice as a pioneer of modern sculpture. Featuring approximately 50 sculptures, mixed media reliefs and works on paper, the exhibition spans Archipenko s entire career. The exhibition highlights the artist s manifold abstractions of the figure and the breadth of his creative legacy that has informed our thinking of modern sculpture in the discernible constant of the Archipenko style. This is a major retrospective exhibition of the life and work of Alexander Archipenko, a maverick in modern sculpture, whose creations remain as important today as they were when they were initially conceived in the twentieth century. Drawn from major museum collections as well as private holdings, the exceptional objects chosen for this exhibition will convey the richness of Archipenko s vision as a pioneering figure of modern sculpture. 2
3 archipenko A Modern Most notably, he integrated negative space as a sculptural form, reintroduced color into sculpture, employed concave and convex shapes to abstract the human figure, and brought mixed media to the field. Situated at the forefront of the historic European avant-garde, Alexander Archipenko ( ) reinvigorated sculpture with dynamic creativity at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Ukrainian-born artist actively propagated and advanced modern art. A leading force in French Cubism, Italian Futurism and German Expressionism, as well as with organizations including the Section d or, Der Sturm and the Société Anonyme, his art was celebrated internationally. Immigrating to the United States in 1923, Archipenko sought to build on his extraordinary reputation. Here, he continued his quest for artistic renewal as a nonconformist, denying all -isms and artist group associations. After experiments in the field of applied arts, he reconnected with vitalist philosophy, on which he based his goal of fostering innate creative powers, and applied it in his artistic production as well as in his pedagogy to redefine his understanding of creativity. In presenting the important contributions of this seminal modern artist, Archipenko: A Modern will illustrate the sculptor s creative language, including the innovations in figurative abstraction that became his trademark. Generally Archipenko is acknowledged for his contribution to French Cubism. During this period of extraordinary cultural transformation, Archipenko initiated a series of innovations crucial to the advancement of modern sculpture. Most notably, he integrated negative space as a sculptural form, reintroduced color into sculpture, employed concave and convex shapes to abstract the human figure, and brought Architectural Figure, , painted terra cotta, 28 x 16 x 12 3/4 in. 3
4 archipenko A Modern Cleopatra, 1957, painted mixed media (wood, bakelite and found objects), 38 x 84 in. mixed media to the field. He also incorporated movement and time into sculpture. These achievements contributed to his prominent position among his Parisian Cubist contemporaries, including Pablo Picasso, the Duchamp brothers, Jacques Lipchitz and Henri Laurens, as well as with other artists including the Italian Futurists, Der Sturm in Germany and members of Eastern European avant-gardes. The selection of works includes celebrated signature pieces and rarely shown originals from this period, including sculpto-paintings, mixed media reliefs, that Archipenko, an artist-inventor, suggested were a better art form than traditional painting and sculpture in that they dynamically combined the intrinsic qualities of form and color by unifying sculptural volumes and pictorial surfaces, and implemented new technical accomplishments and materials. Building on his rich experience in Europe, Archipenko pursued a lifelong affair with the figurative form during his forty-year career in the United States, where he continued to use the abstracted figure as a carrier for sculptural innovation. Carefully selected works, made in America, will offer new insight into Archipenko s practice: he explored lead casting, electro-plating and polychrome patina; refined ceramic as sculptural medium, finding complex ways of treating its surface; experimented with reflective and shiny materials, including mirrors and mother of pearl; and introduced non-traditional art materials such as plexiglass and bakelite, all the while engaging creative tools from the past and the present to foster artistic evolution. In addition to the art works, never-before-exhibited examples from the artist s archives, including annotated photographs of sculptures, sketches, installation views, patent drawings for his machine Archipentura, and lecture transcripts, will offer an unprecedented view into the artist s creative process and philosophy. Archipenko: A Modern is developed by International Arts & Artists (IA&A) in collaboration with the Archipenko Foundation, Bearsville, New York, A fully illustrated catalogue published by IA&A accompanies the exhibition. 4
