1 Analyzing Graphs Project Over the last week or so we have been studying how to create graphs based on a story and how to compose a story based on a graph. You have learned how the steepness and position of the lines on the graph represent things in the real world. You are charged with demonstrating your knowledge of this by creating your own story and graphs. Choose from one of the three options below and create a 3-paragraph story that is paired with 3 matching graphs. Use the rubric below, and look at the student model if you need to. Know that the student example is only one paragraph of a 3-paragraph story. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE 3 paragraphs and 3 graphs. Good Luck, be creative and show us what you know! Option #1 Mission Impossible You are to take on the role of James Bond and break into a top secret warehouse to retrieve the crown jewel for the Queen of England. She has asked you to do this without the authorities knowing and the only information you have is a map of the warehouse, the location of the room the jewel is in and that there is an advanced motion detector monitoring it that is very sensitive that will self-destruct in 10 minutes. You have to 1/ Get to the location of the Jewel 2/ Avoid the motion detector beams, grab the crown jewel and 3/ retreat back to the Queen of England and deliver the jewel. Write 3 paragraphs explaining each part of your trip (5-7 sentences each) do not forget to mention the rate (distance/time) and then draw a graph that shows each part of your trip (3 graphs) properly labeled with Distance/time. You must have a minimum of 5 different movements in each part of your trip. Option #2 Family Vacation Your family has asked you to plan spring break. They would like to you determine where the entire family will go and what you will do. 1/Describe your trip to your spring break destination 2/ Explain one activity you and your family do when you get there and finally 3/ Describe your trip home from the destination. You should account for drive time, restroom/food stops, speed of your car, and activities you may do (hike, shop, movies, etc.). You must include 3 paragraphs (5-7 sentences each) which includes a detailed description of HOW YOU moved and the RATE (Distance per Time) for each part of your trip. You must have a minimum of 5 different movements in each part of your trip and a graph that goes with each (3 graphs total) properly labeled with distance/time. Option #3 Dare Devil You are stuntman/woman that has been hired by the director of the Avengers movies to play the role of either Black Widow or Hawk Eye. They need you to 1/ travel up and then jump out of a helicopter onto a commercial jet-liner, 1/ save some civilians before the plane goes down taking out the bad guys, and then 3/ track your parachute in gale force winds (kind of like a hurricane) before landing safely on the coast of Ocean City. Draw a graph that shows your movement for each part of the scene. You must include 3 paragraphs (5-7 sentences each) which include a detailed description of HOW YOU moved and the RATE (Distance per Time) for each part. You must have a minimum of 5 different movements in each of your 3 graphs labeled properly. **You can also change the scene if you prefer..feel free to be creative.**** Option #4 Your Choice Create a scenario of your choice. It must be approved by Mr. Holocker or Mrs. Marketto and contain 3 different parts with 3 paragraphs (5-7 sentences each) and 3 graphs labeled properly with distance/time. Each graph needs a minimum of 5 movements.

2 Task LIST: Choose the option you plan on creating your project for Use the graphic organizer to plan your story for at least 1 part of it. (Other two parts are optional) Create your graphs (be sure to label the x-axis (time), y-axis (distance) and intervals that are logical. Write your paragraphs describing the movement of your graph. (Be sure to include, direction, distance, and time of all 5 of your movements). Check the rubric and LABEL your final DRAFTS of your paragraphs according to the rubric. Graph #2 of the first part of the trip has all parts labeled clearly Graph #2 includes a minimum of 5 different moves that matches Paragraph #1 Paragraph #3 describes the distance of each move. (Highlighted in Blue) Paragraph #3 includes 5-7 sentences that describes the direction of each move Paragraph #3 includes 5-7 sentences that describes the time of each move. Graph #3 of the first part of the trip has all parts labeled clearly Graph #3 includes a minimum of 5 different moves that matches Paragraph #1 The project is neat, free of spelling errors, and an example of the student s best effort. Total = / 50pts Mastery Assessment Grade: Need to do a Re-Take? Make arrangements to stay after-school with either Mr. Holocker or Mrs. Marketto prior to January 20 th. For the re-take you will essentially do the project over again, using the rubric and following all directions more accurately. Mr. Holocker and Mrs. Marketto will explain to you what you have done wrong and assist you through making a second attempt at the project.

4 Sample: Hike to Ice Burg Lake in Glacier, Montana. (PART 2 of a 3 part story) Fill out the organizer to help you determine your story. Move # Total Distance = 10 miles Total Time = 11 hours Direction of Move Distance of Move Time of Move (How long does this move take keep it in whole #s) 3 miles In 3 hours which Is equal to 1 mile per hour. 1 We started walking away from our car and traveled 2 We were very hungry and thirsty so we decided to stop and have a snack by a beautiful water fall. Stopped 1 hour 3 We continued to walk further north admiring the views and how quiet it was when all of a sudden a moose jumped out in front of us and we needed to run back toward the car! 1 mile walking away from car 1 mile running back toward car 1 hour 4 After we escaped the moose, we continue to walk toward the lake (away from the car) and saw it! 2 miles to Ice Berg Lake 1 hour 5 We stayed by the lake to eat lunch and take photos; we were so proud of our accomplishment!! After lunch, we realized we had to get back to the car before the sun went down. Stopped to eat lunch 4 hours back toward car. 4 hours which is equal to 1 mile per hour.

5 Sample Analyzing Graphs Project Over the summer my husband Jon, my 8-year old son Aidan, and I decided to go on a hike in Glacier, Montana to Ice Berg Lake. We started walking away from our car for our hike and traveled 3 miles for 3 hours. We started to get very hungry and thirsty so we decided to stop and have a snack by a beautiful water fall for 1 hour. We continued to walk further north admiring the views and how quiet it was when all of a sudden a moose jumped out in front of us and we needed to run back toward the car! By the time we had continued our journey we had lost 1 hour and 1 mile. After we escaped the moose, we continue to walk toward the lake (away from the car) and saw it after 2 miles and 1 hour! We stayed by the lake to eat lunch and take photos for 1 hour; we were so proud of our accomplishment!! After lunch, we realized we had to get the 4 miles back to the car before the sun went down and it took 4 hours.
