4 Section R1 (13 marks) Read the following passage and answer all the questions. An Amazing Life Jean-Francois Gravelet was born in northern France in At the age of five his father took him to a circus in the town of St Omer. There he saw a tightrope walker. That evening, Gravelet tied a rope between two trees and walked along it himself. It was not hard for him. He was a natural tightrope walker. Gravelet s father was a gymnast and happily sent his son to study circus skills and gymnastics. After six months, Gravelet started to perform in shows in his town. He was six years old. He became famous and in 1851 he started to call himself Charles Blondin. This was because of his blond hair. In 1855, he went to America. He saw the famous Niagara Falls, which are 340 metres wide and 70 metres high. Blondin put a rope over the falls in June 1859 and told newspapers he would walk across it. Over 100,000 people came to watch. Many thought he would die but he crossed the waterfall in 23 minutes and then walked back. Over the next 30 years, Blondin walked across Niagara Falls many times, each time trying to make the walk more difficult. Once he had a bag over his head. Then he offered to carry the Prince of Wales on his back, but the prince refused. Another time, he took a tiny cooker and made himself an omelette. He crossed the waterfalls 17 times. Towards the end of his life, he moved to London but he continued to perform around the world until the age of 72. He died peacefully in his bed in London in 1897, just over one year after his final performance. For questions 1 3, please answer in complete sentences. (2 marks each) 1.
