1 Markville Secondary School Geography Department CGC1D1 Geography of Canada PERFORMANCE TASK - UNIT 1 AND 2 DUE DATE: SEPTEMBER 2011 Parent Signature: CONTOUR MAP AND MODEL The performance task for Geography Skills unit is a contour mapping model-building exercise. This assignment is an individual project. The goal of this performance task is to create a contour map, a map a lform model that represents characteristics of a given l area. The skills developed in classroom are essential to completion of this task. The contour map performance task allows students opportunity to demonstrate mastery of a number of important expectations. By successful completion of this assignment student will: select use appropriate methods for displaying geographic data; create use effectively photographs, charts, graphs, models diagrams; use cartographic conventions correctly when constructing maps; demonstrate an understing of methods used to collect, organize, manipulate interpret geographic data; use graphic organizers effectively to visualize, clarify, interpret geographic ; select use appropriate technology to present geographic ; use different types of maps to interpret geographic relationships. PART 1 Knowledge/Understing / TOPOGRAPHIC MAP Communication /10 marks In this part of performance task you will create your own Follow instructions below create your map on grid provided. 3 PART 2 Communication /10 marks CONTOUR MAP In this part of performance task you will draw a contour A base map of spot heights is provided. Use a contour interval of 100m when you draw contours. Be sure to follow all rules for drawing contours. NOTE: You will have to adjust your contours to take into account three rivers on isl. You should draw rivers on contour map before you begin. THIS PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT MUST BE COMPLETED AND APPROVED BY THE TEACHER BEFORE PROCEEDING TO PARTS 3 AND 4. PART 3 Application / 10 marks CROSS-SECTION Once contour map has been checked, draw a cross-section or profile of isl. Draw a line or transect from to use that line to draw your cross-section. You must use a scale of 1cm = 100m for cross-section. Be sure to include a title to label crosssection properly. PART 4 Thinking Inquiry / MODEL BUILDING Application /10 marks You will now construct a three dimensional (3-D) model of same area used for your map contour Examples of lform models will be available in classroom but you will have to decide what material you will use for this project. Your teacher will demonstrate a variety of ways to build lform model one simple way is outlined below. 1. Take a light green sheet of construction paper put it under contour Trace outline of isl with a pencil so outline appears on construction paper. Cut out outline use it as a base for your model. 2. Take anor sheet of construction paper (a darker green) trace out 100 m contour in same manner as step one. Cut it out use it to trace 100 m contour onto your cardboard or foam board. Cut that out as well glue construction paper onto cardboard or foam board. Position this 100 m piece onto isl outline from part one. 3. Continue this process until all of contour lines have been traced, cut glued. Remember to use different colours for different elevations. Don t lose any pieces! 4. Glue first layer on cardboard base. Glue rest of layers onto your model in approximate locations as shown on contour Your model should clearly show different heights of isl. 5. Locate all features from your map of isl onto model. Devise an appropriate way of showing se place m in ir correct location on your completed model. Ensure your model has a legend title. 3
