1 Newspaper Book Report Enders Game This book report takes the form of a newspaper. Use the following requirements to design, write and create your book report. Place the articles and features where you think they fit best. There are three ways you may construct your newspaper book report: 1) type everything, cut and paste and place on a big piece of paper or poster board; 2) handwrite all of the articles NEATLY and place on a big piece of paper or poster board; or 3) create the newspaper electronically and print it. Front Page TITLE/DATE TITLE OF NEWSPAPER and DATE Create a title for your newspaper. It can be related to the book, your name, the class, the school, and so on. Don t forget to include your name as the editor. Under the Title/Name of Newspaper, put a date on your newspaper that reflects the time period of the setting of your book. ARTICLES Main Headline At the top of the first page under the title, write a front-page news article about the biggest plot detail in Enders Game. Include details from leading up to this breakthrough, interviews, and what made it so special and interesting. Make sure you answer who, what, where, when, and why. 1. Create a headline related to the article. Also, write your name for the author of the article. 2. Include a picture and caption to go along with the article (i.e. something to capture this moment) New Ending Write a different ending to the book describing what would have happened if the ending resolution had been different. 1. Create a headline that relates to the article. Back Page FEATURES Choose at least THREE features to include on the back page of your newspaper. Advice Column Pretend one of the main characters (i.e. Ender, Valentine, etc.) wrote a short letter to a newspaper advice columnist seeking advice about the major problem they face in the story. Create an assumed name (AKA fake name) for your character to sign his or her letter. Then write the response from the columnist that reflects how the problem was solved.

2 1. Create a headline that relates to the article. (ex. Dear Abby, etc.) Book Review Write a review for Enders Game. 1. Explain your likes and dislikes. 2. To whom would you recommend this book? Why? 3. Create a headline for your book review. Editorial Choose an issue related to your book and take a position on it. 1. Write a letter to the editor describing how you feel about this issue. 2. Think carefully and honestly about what you want to say. 3. Create a headline for the editorial. Comics Design a four-panel comic strip that illustrates something funny that happened in the story. 1. Use the four squares as a guide or as the actual comic strip. 2. Create a title for your strip. Obituary Write an obituary for one of the characters that dies in the novel. Provide their name, details about the funeral, what they enjoyed during their life, accomplishments, etc. Front and Back Pages FINISHING TOUCHES Advertisements, Crosswords, and More All the space in your newspaper should be filled. After you have written all that is required, be creative to fill up the remaining spaces. Suggested possibilities include want ads, advertisements, crossword puzzles, word searches, riddles, etc. Make sure everything relates to the novel.

3 Newspaper Book Report Rubric 1. Your main article answers the five W s in a well-developed article. Your headline is 2. Your main article explains about a key plot detail and is written in a descriptive and insightful way. 3. The new ending to your story is creative and changes the outcome of your story. Your headline is 4. Your first of the three features relates to the novel and is well written. Your headline is 5. Your second of the three features relates to the novel and is well written. Your headline is 6. Your third of the three features relates to the novel and is well written. Your headline is 7. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are correct. 8. Rate the visual presentation. (Writing, pictures, overall neatness, and use of all the space provided) 9. Rough draft and revisions: 10pts. 10. Other writing, ads, etc. in newspaper: 10pts. TOTAL: 100 pts.
