3 EDITORIAL / 01/ EDITORIAL. WE LIVE TEXTILE. All around the world there are trade routes that are thousands of years old. The most famous of them is the Silk Road, which connected ancient China with the civilisations of Mesopotamia and Europe. It was only in the late Middle Ages with the increase in trade by sea that the original Silk Road began to lose importance. The Silk Road got its name from the German geographer Ferdinand Freiherr von Richthofen in the 19th century. He named the world's most significant trade route after a textile, silk, which even in antiquity travelled as far as Europe over the caravan routes. That the route is named after a textile is not without reason. The importance of the textile trade in the history of humankind cannot be overemphasised. Weaving is significantly older than pottery making, and there is evidence that humans were able to weave over 32,000 years ago. Textiles, and thus silk, bring together the basic human need for clothing with the personal desire for individuality, luxury and status. The textile industry has also always been closely linked to technological progress. The steam engine, which started the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, was first used to power spinning machines and looms. When the Chinese government announced the international investment project "One Belt, one Road" in 2013, the vision of a new Silk Road was born. The plan is to catapult the traditional trade routes between Asia and Europe into the 21st century with billions in investment under the participation of 64 countries. The new Silk Road opens fascinating new perspectives for the textile industry. In this Express issue, we invite you to accompany us on an exciting journey through countries that the ancient Silk Road crossed. Zinser and Schlafhorst have been present in the pulsing centres of the textile industry along the new Silk Road for years: in the Chinese cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, Urumqi and Korla, in the capital city of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, in the Iranian city of Isfahan, in Chandigarh in northern India, and in Kahramanmaraş in Turkey. On 7th September 2013, China's president Xi Jinping delivered a speech at Nazarbayev University in Astana in which he mentioned Yi Dai Yi Lu ("One Belt, one Road") for the first time. The "One Belt, one Road" initiative is a cross-border investment project which is attracting attention around the world under the name "New Silk Road". The textile industry in Asia and Europe is enjoying fascinating opportunities for growth. 64 states are involved in investing in infrastructure The initiative includes what is known as the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road. The Belt, Dai in Chinese, refers to the Eurasian Economic Area which stretches from Western Europe to China. The Maritime Silk Road, Lu in Chinese, denotes a chain of free trade ports and shipping routes which extends from Southeast Asia, via the Arabian Peninsula to Africa and through the Suez canal to the Mediterranean. In total, almost one trillion US dollars will be invested into ports, railway lines, pipelines and other infrastructure projects to expand the trade routes between Europe, Asia and Africa. 64 states are involved in this project and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has been founded with a share capital 100 billion US dollars.

6 6 INNOVATIONS / 1/2017 High-speed rail links for intensive trade connections The investments in an ultramodern logistics network of roads, railway lines and trade centres for transporting freight in the Silk Road Economic Belt boost trade relations between regions which have been in close economic contact for many centuries. The Belt runs along one of the oldest trade routes in history; the legendary Silk Road. But the New Silk Road only shares its name with the caravan routes once travelled by Marco Polo. Instead of unprepossessing camels, goods will be transported by ultramodern freight trains amongst other means and will run between Asia and Europe every hour. To make Western China accessible in terms of transport, the Middle Kingdom is currently investing one eighth of its gross domestic product in high-speed rail links, motorways and entire cities. Many Central Asian states along the New Silk Road see this as a major economic opportunity and are also modernising their infrastructure. But Europe also stands to benefit from ultramodern trade routes, improvements in logistics and faster rail connections. Even nowadays, freight trains can trundle from Asia to Western Europe within 14 days, for instance. Cargo ships need five whole weeks to do it. Spirit of optimism in the textile industry The textile industries in Asia and Europe cannot fail to benefit from the "One Belt, one Road" Initiative. For Uzbekistan, the sixth largest producer of cotton in the world, the development in Western China opens up new markets, not just for raw cotton but also for yarns. Uzbekistan is currently taking great strides to develop and modernise its cotton processing sector. Cooperation between yarn producers and the textile industry in processing countries such as Bangladesh will intensify to their mutual benefit. India, Pakistan and Turkey have flourishing textile industries situated in the Silk Road Belt and are sure to seize the new opportunities. Egypt, Iran and other countries in the Middle East are experiencing a boom which is being encouraged even more by the "One Belt, one Road" initiative. A large number of companies in the textile industry are modernising their facilities and will start exploiting new markets in the next few years. There is a strong chance that the important regional and national economic areas along the Silk Road with their individual strengths and weaknesses will merge into one large area and will bring more growth and prosperity for everyone. Short routes between producers and consumers an important factor for success, even with the fast pace of modern textiles. The E³-certified machines from Saurer provide triple added value to textile companies, in the areas of energy, economics and ergonomics. In the last Express, we reported on the high level of resource efficiency of the Autoconer 6 and its unbeatable efficiency. This article will discuss its integrated intelligence, which ensures that it operates almost complete independently from personnel and has maximum process reliability. Intelligence inside In the Autoconer, intelligent functions lead to measurably improved process efficiency. The doffer equipped with SmartJet is an outstanding example of smart, networked, innovative functionality. In addition to its package doffing function, it resolves up to 85% of all errors that occur during upper yarn pick-up by itself, independently of personnel. This value measured in practice means fewer downtimes due to red lights and noticeably reduced effort for personnel. Thanks to its sensors and functional intelligence, the Autoconer 6 now operates autonomously and independently of personnel also during calibration processes. All splicer feeder arms are automatically calibrated when the machine is turned on. Time-consuming manual calibration and adjustment of the feeder arms at every winding unit is no longer necessary. Automatic calibration ensures greater process reliability and quality with 100% reproducible settings. The same is true for the regular adjustment of the suction tube position, which is also done automatically. The parameters can conveniently be entered into the Informator. Monitoring rather than intervening With the Autoconer, personnel are almost exclusively required for monitoring of production. The Autoconer 6 provides process intelligence directly. For example, the intelligent additional functions: multi-tube handling, empty tube strategy and Tube Check support the X-Change doffer during package handling. In the material flow, Bobbin- Sharing, VarioReserve and Highspeed-Feeding ensure the intelligent balancing out of material flow variations. Where manual handling is unavoidable, the functional Autoconer design effectively supports personnel. For example, splicer set-up times are drastically reduced. The manual feeding of bobbins to the Autoconer, type RM is ergonomic and safe to operate thanks to the innovative 9+1 feeding principle. Consumption optimisation made easy An entirely new feature in the area of ergonomics is the automatic monitoring of energy and compressed air consumption with Energy Monitoring. Consumption data can be read directly from the Informator. Strategies for consumption optimisation can be developed rapidly and efficiently with the Autoconer 6. Series of measurements for optimization of energy consumption that require significant effort from personnel are now unnecessary. At the same time this new online monitoring increases personnel awareness for the topic of zero waste.

The handy online portal is a digital service assistant for spinning mills that want to look after, maintain and modernise textile machines from Zinser and Schlafhorst efficiently. The new release offers not only additional functions but also a completely revised user interface. It works with all output devices desktop PCs, notebooks, tablets or smartphones even more effectively, so that quick and easy operation is guaranteed. More efficient machine and system management At the push of a button, SECOS 2.0 provides the spinning mill's management with all the information needed for looking after, maintaining and modernising its fleet of machines. With SECOS, spinning mills can optimise their service costs, minimise changeover and downtimes, increase the beneficial effects through modernization at the right time and benefit from technological innovations sooner than the competition. SECOS saves time and money in service management while reducing the amount of non-productive administration work that personnel need to carry out. Ordering original parts online The heart of SECOS is the e-commerce module with the online shop for original parts. Purchase orders are placed by entering a part number or selecting the original part from an exploded drawing of the machine in question. The user can conveniently zoom into the drawings and find the correct original part without difficulty. Alternatively, the user can select the required original part from illustrated online shops for the machine in question containing the most common wear parts and original parts for quick and easy access. In this way, incorrect orders are reduced to a minimum. SECOS provides customers with information about the status of their purchase orders at any time. They can keep an eye on delivery dates, making it possible to plan conversion and downtimes in advance so that production stoppages can be kept to an absolute minimum. 12 12 TECHNOLOGY / 1/2017 ELASTIC CORE YARNS. AUTOCONER: WIND, SPLICE, PROFIT. Elastic core yarns have been a trend for years and are conquering more and more application areas. Various material combinations are used, both "classic" elastic core yarns, and increasingly also duo-core yarns. There is therefore no general prescription for processing these challenging yarns during the winding process. Thanks to its technological flexibility, the Autoconer from Schlafhorst can be individually adjusted. It winds and splices modern core and duo-core yarns in a highly profitable way with unbeatable quality. The most valuable packages in the world Due to the elasticity of the yarns, producing large-format packages with stable, even package build, straight package flanks and excellent unwinding properties presents a demanding challenge. The Autoconer meets this challenge with distinction. When using Autotense FX with Variotense FX and Propack FX with Variopack FX, by the drum winding stage densely packed, large format packages with almost straight package flanks can be formed. This is even more efficient with the drumless PreciFX displacement system. Record-breakingly large packages with a diameter of up to 320 mm and a weight of up to 6 kg are a practical reality. Autoconer customers therefore reduce their logistics and shipping costs (by up to 30%) and increase their profitability. Maximum efficiency during further processing is achieved with absolutely straight package flanks and gently rounded edges. In addition, PreciFX winds faster than all other drumless yarn displacement systems, particularly in combination with Speedster FX. 13 TECHNOLOGY / 1/ Always the optimal splice The Autoconer convincingly demonstrates its superiority when splicing elastic core yarns and duo-core yarns. The variety of materials means that no general prescription works here either, however with the SmartSplicer family, optimal splices can be achieved for both weaving and knitting yarns. The splicing parameters are set centrally, and are therefore reliable and reproducible. The splicing equipment can be simply and quickly adjusted and changed thanks to the Quick-Change Unit. This means that, depending on the requirement, yarn-like spliced joints with low elasticity and high strength can be created for weaving, or elastic, more voluminous spliced joints for knitting. Any conceivable material combinations can be processed, not least because Schlafhorst is continuously working on the optimisation of the splicing components. 15 TECHNOLOGY / 1/ AUTOCORO 9. ECONOMICAL RECYCLING. Raw materials are expensive. They make up more than half of all costs in a spinning plant. There is therefore great incentive to use less raw materials or purchase them more cheaply. Recycling is an especially efficient way to reduce raw materials costs. However, raw materials are not merely expensive. They can also be scarce, for example crude oil, which is necessary for the manufacture of PES. And last but not least, there are natural limits to raw material extraction. 2,000 litres of water are required to water the cotton plants needed to produce cotton for a single T-shirt. What could make more sense than recycling textile raw materials? Recycling does not always mean recycling In general, very different and varied types of recycling are in use for finished textiles. The simplest form is the sale or donation of used clothes so that they can continue to be worn by other people. In many sectors, the recycling of materials on an industrial scale is carried out. Cleaning cloths, fleece and non-woven fabrics, cushion stuffing, insulating materials and paper and cardboard are made from ripped up textile products. However, at present we will discuss cotton waste from spinning, weaving and knitting factories that is recycled either directly or after being ripped up into individual fibres. Fibre recycling in the spinning mill Strictly speaking, the recycling of fibres in a spinning mill is always downcycling, since the recycled product can never attain the quality of the original product. But it would be wrong to think that the best a finely knitted single jersey can do in its second life is serve as a tennis sock or camping blanket. In practice, yarns of surprisingly high quality can be produced through mixing recycled fibres with new ones. But before this stage, the material goes through a complex recycling process. 16 16 TECHNOLOGY / 1/2017 First, cutting scraps from weaving and knitting factories or scrap yarn from spinning mills must be sorted, so that unmixed starting material is available. The fabric and yarn remnants are then ripped up into individual fibres by a machine. After this procedure, the fibres no longer have the same length as the original cotton. They measure only a few millimetres, meaning that the quality cannot be compared to that of new cotton. After bleaching or dying, the short recycled fibres are mixed with long carrier fibres so that they can be spun. Which carrier fibres are to be used and in what quantities depends on the desired end product. The spinning process cannot achieve the same strength, evenness, hairiness and fineness with recycled fibres as with new quality raw material. However, it is possible to produce a high quality pair of jeans by mixing in 30% recycled cotton fibres. Coarse yarns for the manufacture of blankets can even be made from 90% recycled fibres, reinforced with 10% PES or PAN fibres. The mixtures are carded and stretched in preparation for spinning, just like new fibres. Because recycled material frequently cannot be stretched multiple times, the shorter IDF process is often used. Recycling material is a valuable raw material that will increase in importance in the future. Many textile companies already ensure sustainable production processes with intelligent resource management. The Autocoro from Schlafhorst plays a central role in efficiency in this regard. 17 TECHNOLOGY / 1/ Schlafhorst produces high-quality reels with an optimised structure that perform well in further processing due to their excellent unwinding characteristics. The international company Fiavit from Portugal is committed to sustainability and has been working successfully with recycled fibres for years. The experts from Fiavit are familiar with the advantages of the Autocoro 9 from their daily work. "We were able to increase production by 10% with the Autocoro 9. We became very flexible regarding changing the product and with the Autocoro 9 we achieve a steady level of efficiency of around 98%." The industry is also looking for opportunities to recycle textiles from polyester, which is becoming ever more popular due to its outstanding maintenance and wear qualities. Already, around 5% of the world's oil is used to manufacture polyester fibres. An efficient recycling process would represent an incalculable gain for sustainable textile production. The manufacture of polyester fibres from PET bottles already works and proves how great the potential for recirculation of materials is once the processes can be made economical. New recycling processes in development New processes for the recycling of cotton are already appearing on the horizon that could revolutionise the market if they are brought to industrial maturity over the next few years. The VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, for example, has developed a technology where cotton waste is transformed into cellulose fibres through a chemical process, which are then further processed during wet spinning. This technology does not require any sulphuric hydrocarbon substances for the opening process, as is the case for conventional viscose. It is therefore particularly environmentally friendly.

At the beginning of 2017, the 2.5 millionth Autoconer winding unit went into operation in the Indian textile company Kanchan Ltd. The company from Bhilwara is located approximately 400 km south of a spur of the old Silk Road, which ran from southern China through Mathura in northern India to Persia. 2.5 million Autoconer winding units this unparalleled record in the sector represents a significant milestone in the Schlafhorst company success story. This success proves how much trust that customers have in the technological leadership of the German textile machinery manufacturer. The synonym for automatic package winding for 55 years With the beginning of mass production of the Autoconer in 1962, the era of automatic package winding began. Since then, the name Autoconer has been the synonym for automatic package winding. Today, Autoconer packages are still the global benchmark for quality and efficiency. The history of the Autoconer is characterised by a long list of ground-breaking inventions that have always increased customer benefits. Every product generation of the Autoconer exceeded the industry's expectations regarding efficiency and technology. Revolutionary splicing technology, innovative sensor technology and control systems, the unique FX technologies and intelligent automation systems became state of the art, thanks to Schlafhorst. Autoconer 107 the dawn of automation The first product generation of the Autoconer radically changed workflows in the package winding sector. For the first time, operators were relieved of almost all manual work thanks to the Autoconer and took on mainly supervisory functions. Automation was the necessary prerequisite to increasing productivity and quality, as the limiting factors of staff, and therefore the necessary manual interference, were removed. The package winding sector became significantly more efficient; it was the breakthrough that changed the labour-intensive winding process to an automatic one. Autoconer 138 the invention of splicing technology The Autoconer 138 astounded the textile world in 1976 with its separate mechanical, electric and pneumatic functions. But the real sensation entered the market only two years later. In 1978, innovative automatic splicing revolutionised yarn joining: the splice replaced knots for the first time. In doing so, quality for subsequent processes was re-defined, and the efficiency increased significantly. Zinser and Schlafhorst will equip the new OOO "Bakan Tex" plant with a fully automatic cotton mill. FIRST COMPETENCE DAY MAY In Saurer Tekstil A.Ş.'s technology centre in Kahramanmaraş, the Yarn Academy Turkey held their first Competence Day on 9th May Company directors and technical managers from Turkish spinning companies were invited. At this first event, experts from Zinser and Schlafhorst provided the approximately 70 participants with an interesting programme of lectures and workshops on important issues regarding ring spinning. They were also supported by speakers from textile machinery manufacturers Trützschler GmbH & Co. KG who covered topics relating to spinning preparation. The aim of the Yarn Academy is to share technical and technological expertise in ring and rotor spinning through practical means and strengthen customer contact at an operational management level in Turkish spinning companies in particular. The content of the Competence Days is relevant to the market and is in line with the desires and needs of customers. The Yarn Academy also used the opening event to gather topic suggestions for future events. The experts from Zinser and Schlafhorst will now work up the topics which the majority of participants found particularly important and incorporate them in the program for the next Competence Day in September. Along the Maritime Silk Road in Southeast Asia, the textile industry is an important economic factor with a long tradition.
