1 Industrial Robotics Businesses have everything to gain The robot revolution has begun Manufacturing, cleaning, maintenance: soon increasingly more sophisticated industrial robots will combine dexterity and intelligence to accomplish complex tasks that up until now could only be done by humans. Deft, autonomous, and perfectly in synch with humans, these new robots are revolutionizing the way we work. Increasingly intelligent and fast-moving robots are helping streamline and accelerate production processes. Most of the time, robots are tasked with assembly, handling, cutting, polishing, and painting. Freed from dangerous and arduous tasks, employees can focus on more valuable work. For companies, this cooperation clearly enhances productivity and creativity. Far from pitting robots and humans against each other in a duel, robotization has created a Human Machine duo. 2 PART 1 Industrial robotics from a global viewpoint Production automation is picking up speed PART 2 Industry 4.0, a Challenge for Industrial Robotics Industry 4.0: 3, 2, 1, and they re off! Between now and 2020, 1.7 million new robots will be integrated into factories all over the globe. China, South Korea, Japan, the United States and Germany represent the key players in this market. With the exception of China, these five producing countries rank among the 10 most automated countries in the world (namely South Korea, Singapore, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Denmark, the United States, Italy, Belgium and Taiwan). A pioneer in the field, the automotive industry today uses 35% of industrial robots, paving the way for automation in the pharmaceutical, food, energy, mechanical engineering and electronics sectors. The benefits of the new generation of robots precise, connected and collaborative open up new environments and boost growth. Industry 4.0 increases the productivity of businesses of all sizes, including SMEs. All manufacturing companies, from large international groups to small businesses, must take the growing needs of both customers and employees into account. To do so, they must improve workstation layout, management systems, and supplier relations. Industry 4.0 is helping businesses meet this challenge with a new work method that brings the virtual and physical worlds closer than ever before. In recent years, factories have increasingly digitized their equipment. The result: The entire industrial process, from manufacturing to warehousing, distribution, and sales, is becoming networked and is operating in realtime communication. Industry 4.0 meets the challenges of deindustrialization and helps companies improve competitiveness or relocate their production equipment. Strong robotic focus: a growth strategy across all continents It is estimated that the global pool of industrial robots will total 3,053,000 units by 2020 (compared to 1,828,000 in 2016), with an average annual growth rate of 14%. In 2017, this pool increased by 16% in Asia/ Australia, by 9% in America and by 7% in Europe. With this in mind, the differences in the 1.7 million Estimated global robot sales between now and ROBOTS ARE WINNING OVER ALL INDUSTRY SECTORS 65% 35% number of robots used from continent to continent soon won t be as noticeable. At the start of 2018, the global robot density (number of robots per 10,000 employees) was estimated at 74 contrasted by 66 in Europe is leading (99), followed by America (84) and Asia (63). However, the extremely active Chinese market is expected to have around 950,300 units by 2020, considerably more than Europe (611,700 units). The Japanese pool will also grow slightly between 2018 and Consequently, Asia will have 1.9 million robots, which nearly equates to the global pool in CHINA, THE LEADER IN ROBOTIZATION % +8% +10% +14% +0% THE FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION MECHANIZATION INDUSTRIALIZATION AUTOMATION INDUSTRY 4.0 Industry 4.0, which first rose to prominence in Germany, is the integration of digital technologies and automated processes. Hailed as the fourth industrial revolution, its interconnected, communicating robots have profoundly transformed the face of production. In the first industrial revolution, the steam engine gave rise to mechanization. In the second, electricity led to industrialization and mass production. In the third, dangerous and repetitive human tasks were reassigned to the first generation of robots in a process called automation. Linking physical plants to virtual reality, Industry 4.0 will play an increasingly important role in global manufacturing and will factor heavily in the double-digit growth in the industrial robot market between 2016 and Automotive market Electronics/plastics processing/metalworking/ pharmaceuticals/food Robots purchased in the five largest markets in 2016 Share of robotization according to sector Interesting fact: The most robotized sectors are the electronics industry in Japan, the automotive industry in the United States and Germany, and the electricity and electronics industries in South Korea. Automotive industry in pole position in the American market The world s biggest free trade area (United States, Canada and Mexico) has the 3rd largest pool of industrial robots globally. The American robotic density (189 robots for every 10,000 employees in industry in 2016) is expanding rapidly. The automotive industry is characterized by the greatest number, accounting for 57% of units supplied in 2016, imported from Japan, Korea and Europe. In 2016, the robotic offering of the United States was ranked 4th behind the Republic of Korea, Japan and China; although the USA isn t home to many robot manufacturers, it has a lot of integrators. Economists are banking on GDP growth and major contracts of automobile manufacturers for robot sales in the United States to continue to increase by at least 15% on average per year until Source: World Robot Statistics 2017, published by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR).

3 PART 3 Industrial Robotics and Jobs Robots: Job destroyers... Some economists and industrialists believe robotization is synonymous with job loss. This is the conclusion put forth by the Davos Economic Forum in a recent in-depth study of 15 countries. According to the study, robot technology is expected to destroy 7.1 million jobs over the next five years while creating just two million. Robotization in the 5 biggest markets 2016 figures ROBOTS PURCHASED ANNUALLY China South Korea Japan 87,000 41,400 38,600 United States 31,400 Germany 20,000 UNEMPLOYMENT RATE 4,1 % 3,7 % 3 % 4,7 % 3,9 % or job creators? Rob Atkinson, president of the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, a think tank, has a different opinion. In 2013, he wrote an opinion piece in MIT Technology Review:... when a machine replaces a worker, there is a second order effect: the organization using the machine saves money and that money flows back into the economy.... That money gets spent, which stimulates demand that other companies respond to by hiring more workers. The most automated countries (China, Japan, South Korea, United States, and Germany) happen to be those with the lowest unemployment rates. What is more, robots cannot replace all jobs, particularly those that require interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt quickly: those who adeptly combine technical skills with interpersonal interaction, flexibility, and adaptability to offer services that are uniquely human. An opinion shared by many experts in digital technology and robotics, stresses the importance of human inventiveness: Today, businesses experiencing productivity gains thanks to robots are going to reinvest in innovative startups, new software, applications, eco-friendly solutions, and all areas where human inventiveness is indispensable. Human talent is essential to train, repair, and manage the rapidly growing robot workforce, as well as to develop the robot technology industry, a thriving sector in its own right.... when a machine replaces a worker, there is a second order effect: the organization using the machine saves money and that money flows back into the economy.... That money gets spent, which stimulates demand that other companies respond to by hiring more workers. Rob Atkinson Responsibility, decision making, creativity in the robot ecosystem humans do indeed have a central role to play. ROBOTS CREATE JOBS In the Automotive Industry, In Europe, automation has a positive impact on jobs Automation reduces production costs 80,000 new industrial robots installed Average yearly increase in robot inventory (+13,000 units) 230,000 jobs created +3% +2.5% Average yearly increase in the number of jobs (+93,000 jobs) Increased demand has a positive impact on jobs Lower product prices increase demand Reduced production costs mean lower product prices Robotics 5

4 PART 4 The Collaborative Robot: Man s Best Friend The cobot, a new type of coworker Robots are at the service of humans, relieving us of repetitive, dangerous tasks. Humans and robots are not fighting a duel, but performing as a duo. They collaborate. Robots interact with humans to improve productivity and the quality of manufactured products. Today, humans and robots are able to work side-byside in the same space, safely and with no physical barriers. These new types of sophisticated machines are collaborative robots. Smarter, articulated, with integrated visual guidance and improved sensors, these cobots can work with or without humans, in complete safety. Ideally, cobots should combine safety qualities with all the benefits of traditional robots in terms of precision, reproducibility, and speed. Such is the challenge that the robotics industry will need to face to attract businesses, smaller ones in particular. According to IFR, collaborative robot sales accounted for 1.5% to 2% of the 254,000 robots sold worldwide in This year, almost all manufacturers are producing cobots, making up for this slow start. These days, collaborative robots mostly carry out assembly tasks. But it will be increasingly common for them to assist operators in a variety of activities, improving quality and manufacturing processes and increasing productivity. This new method of collaboration will also allow older workers to keep their jobs because robots are lending a helping hand. Strong potential for development among small businesses In a study entitled World Robotics 2016, IFR states that by 2019 the number of industrial robots in small businesses worldwide will soar. Today, few small businesses employ engineers with expertise in robotics. Therefore these businesses will invest in user-friendly robots that are easily integrated and operated in their production processes. Manufacturers will thus be able to maintain efficient and flexible production processes. As for collaborative robots, these compact, userfriendly machines also have a promising future in small businesses around the world because of their flexibility and ability to integrate into a variety of production processes. Conclusion A Bright Future for Robotics As we have seen, by bringing virtual reality into the factory, Industry 4.0 is becoming the new model of industrial manufacturing around the world. A model in which human machine collaboration is sure to take off. Simpler, more flexible, and more affordable, robots are ready to unleash their full potential, even in smaller businesses. This phenomenon is spurred by global competition, which means production facilities must undergo constant modernization, and by growing consumer demand, which means production must be higher capacity, quicker, and more flexible than ever. Sophisticated, high-tech, and safe new collaborative robots will be able to work side by side with humans to continuously improve production quality. The future of robotization indeed looks bright. With improvements to robot intelligence, instead of taking humans out of manufacturing as some people have feared, we re actually creating a whole new kind of collaboration. 4 robot myths Robots destroy jobs Worldwide, the countries with the highest levels of automation have the lowest rates of unemployment Robots are for multinationals and mass production Smaller businesses, including microbusinesses, are investing heavily in robots Robots are expensive Robot prices have dropped to between a half and third of what they were 30 years ago Robots are complicated Programming today is highly simplified 5 5 Better product quality 4 Better image (keeping up to date) good reasons to invest in a robot 1 Lower labor costs Flexible production 3 2 Increased productivity Robotics 7
