1 17 September to 30 December 2016 Education Programme for People with Disabilities - Autumn 2016 The Education Programme for People with Disabilities offers a range of workshops and courses for children and young adults aged 4 to 18. Taught by professional artists, the workshops and courses are designed to encourage participants creativity, develop their communication skills and enrich their knowledge of art. The Autumn 2016 Education Programme, which runs in parallel with Sharjah Art Foundation exhibitions, takes place from 17 September to 30 December. Key to symbols: Person who is blind or has low vision Person who is deaf or is hard of hearing Person with a physical disability Person with Down syndrome Person with Autism Spectrum Disorder Courses and Workshops MAKE YOUR OWN EGYPTIAN SURREALIST WITH PHOTOMONTAGE Thursday, 22 September 3:00 pm 5:00 pm Ages: 5-9 in one group, in another Location: Collections Building After being provided with random portraits cut into pieces, participants will use the photomontage technique to rearrange the pieces into their own artworks in the style of Kamal Youssef. This workshop will include a tour of the Kamal Youssef exhibition. 1

2 OVERPAINTING Wednesday, 28 September 3:00 pm 5:00 pm Location: Collections Building In this workshop, participants will learn about the concepts of found objects and overpainting and be provided with cut leaves and flowers to stick on A5 canvases. They will then paint with acrylics on top of their canvases, using the overpainting technique inspired by Arnulf Rainer s artworks. PAPIER MACHE PENCIL HOLDERS Tuesday, 4 October and Wednesday, 5 October 10:00 Am - 12:00 pm on both days Location: Art For All Disabilities Centre Participants will be invited to try their hands at designing papier maché pencil holders with polka dots in the style of Yayoi Kusama. One day of the workshop will be dedicated to sculpting, the other to painting. INTRODUCTION TO ABSTRACT PAINTING Saturday, 16 October 10:00 am 12:00 pm Ages: 4+ Location: Art For All Disabilities Centre Participants will learn about the basics of abstract painting and experiment with unique colour combinations in the manner of Arnulf Rainer. SURREALIST DRAWING AND USE OF PASTELS Tuesday, 25 October and Wednesday, 26 October 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm on both days Location: Art For All Disabilities Centre On the first day of this two-day course, participants will learn the basics of surrealist drawing concepts. On the following day, they will learn rendering 2

3 techniques, using water soluble pastels to produce their own Egyptian surrealist artworks. IKEBANA: JAPANESE FLOWER ARRANGING Tuesday, 8 November 10:00 pm - 12:00 pm Evolving over seven centuries and taught to school children from an early age, Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Participants in this workshop will learn the same principles of order and colour balance as Japanese children do by arranging cut plants and flowers on moss blocks. This workshop will introduce participants to a new culture, a new form of play and a new art activity. MIXED MEDIA PORTRAITS Wednesday, 9 November 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm For this workshop, participants will create a mixed-media self-portrait in the style of Yayoi Kusama. Participants can choose either to have their photo taken during the workshop or bring a printed photo (4 x 6 inches) with them. HOW TO MAKE A SILENT MOVIE SIMPLIFIED Tuesday,15 November and Wednesday,16 November 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm on both days Locations: Art for All Disabilities Centre Tuesday, 15 November: Participants will learn to take multiple photos or make motion drawings of a moment they want to capture on film during their tour of the Robert Breer exhibition. Wednesday, 16 November: Participants will use their photos and drawings to make a short silent film. 3

4 NORTH AND EAST AFRICAN AND HERITAGE WORKSHOPS WIREWORK AND WIRE WRAPPING Sunday, 27 November 10:00 am - 12:00 pm In this workshop, participants will learn the art of wirework and East African Swahili wire-wrapping. Moulding and sculpting techniques using glass bottles and copper wires will be covered. The final product will be a wire sculpture, which participants will decorate with beads. ] FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS Tuesday, 29 November 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Ages: 5+ Participants will make a simple loom out of cardboard and then learn how to weave bracelets with wool or embroidery thread using a hand-knotting technique called the Herringbone, which originated in Masai lands. CLAY POTS AND FOLK STORIES FOR THE GARDEN Wednesday, 7 December and Thursday, 8 December 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm on both days Ages: 5+ Location: Urban Garden In this workshop, participants will join in an interactive retelling of a folktale from Sudan or Eastern Africa. They will then respond visually to the folktale by drawing and painting on a clay pot, creating designs and images based on what most impressed them in the story. KHAMSA HAND AMULET: MAKING A FOIL SCRAPING Saturday, 17 December 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm Ages: 5+ Location: Collections Building Participants will redesign the traditional Middle Eastern and North African khamsa hand amulet with a non-traditional artmaking technique called foil scraping. They will scrape templates with abstract patterns into cardboard hands 4

5 using techniques that will enable them to learn how to achieve symmetry and balance in their art. NDEBELE HOUSE CLAY MODELING Wednesday, 21 December 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm Participants will build models of traditional mud brick houses in the style of the Ndebele people and learn the basics of air-dry clay modelling. They will finish the houses with a Pan-African colour scheme and painted pattern that originates from East African Masai designs.
