1 Theme: Living Artist Lesson Title: Fiber Arts with Nick Cave Grade Level: 7 & 8 Time: 1 hour 50 minutes Saturday Lesson #4 Living Artist Art Concept: Wearable Mixed-Media Kinetic Sculpture Artmaking Processes and Techniques: Gluing, Sewing, Painting, Make-up Art Elements/Principles of Design: Movement, Rhythm, Color, & Form National Standards: (5-8) 2c Students select and use the qualities of structures and functions of art to improve communication of their ideas (5-8) 5b Students analyze contemporary and historic meanings in specific artworks through cultural and aesthetic inquiry (5-8) 6a Students compare the characteristics of works in two or more art forms that share similar subject matter, historical periods, or cultural context (5-8) 6b Students describe ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines taught in the school are interrelated with the visual arts State Goals, Learning Standards and Benchmarks: 25.B.3 Compare and contrast the elements and principles in two or more art works that share similar themes. 26.B.3d Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create 2- and 3-dimensional works and time arts (e.g., film, animation, video) that are realistic, abstract, functional and decorative. 27.A.3b Compare and contrast how the arts function in ceremony, technology, politics, communication and entertainment. 27.B.3 Know and describe how artists and their works shape culture and increase understanding of societies, past and present. Comprehensive Components: Art History, Art Aesthetics, Art Production, Art Criticism Domains: C1 Knowledge, C2 Comprehension, C3 Application, C4 Analysis, C5 Synthesis, C6 Evaluation, A1 Overview: Students will first decide what sculpture is and then view a video clip of Nick Cave s Soundsuits. They will list similarities and differences between African Tribal dancing and masks, Nick Cave s Soundsuits, and Joseph Beuy s Performance Art. Students will then create a full body costume which creates some type of sound when in motion. Lastly, they will compare and constrast the effect of photography versus video clips of Nick Cave s Soundsuits on the viewer. 1

2 Rationale: By creating costumes inspired by Nick Cave s Soundsuits, students will learn that fiber arts can be sculptural. By comparing African attire to the Soundsuits of Nick Cave students will realize kinetic sculpture has been around for ages. By participating in a discussion about what defines sculpture, students will better understand the aesthetics of three-dimensional design. Objectives As a result of this unit, students will Artmaking: Create a costume that must cover them from head to toe using a t-shirt and at least two types of media. (5-8) 2c; 26.B.3d; C5 Historical/Cultural Context: Describe at least one influence of Nick Cave s work, orally giving at least two reasons for their decision. (5-8) 6b; 27.B.3, 18.A.2, 18.B.3a; C2 Criticism: Orally compare and contrast how the context changes the content of the work of Nick Cave, citing 4 reasons to support your opinion. (5-8) 6a; 25.B.3, C6 Aesthetics: Decide whether Nick Cave s Soundsuits are sculptural, orally giving at least one reason for their decision. (5-8) 5b; 27.A.3b; C6 Participation: demonstrate a willingness to learn about kinetic fiber arts by positively contributing to the discussion during the lesson and participating in the art making activities. 3 Learning Activities Materials: Cardboard Masks, African Masks & Iron Man Suit (Sam), Masks, Images & Video Clips of Nick Cave s Soundsuits, Images of African Tribal Masks, Asst. Costumes, computer, projector, speakers with computer for music, teachers wearing their examples, butcher block paper, markers, masking tape Procedure Teacher Directed: 1. Set Induction: All teachers will be fully dressed in their teacher examples from the start. 2. Iron Man suit will be on a manikin. 3. Students will come in and look at realia, which will include masks and costumes. Art Aesthetics, Art Criticism, Art History Introductions and Review of Objectives for Lesson Teacher Directed: (art aesthetics) 4. Watch a video of Nick Cave s Soundsuits; talk about how sounds of the costumes are an important part of aesthetic 5. Decide whether Nick Cave s Soundsuits are sculptural, making a list of pros and cons with reasons why on butcher block paper. Ensure everyone gives at least one response with reasoning. 6. Establish Kinetic Sculpture as art. Talk about mobiles. Group Discussion: (art criticism) 7. View a video clip of Nick Cave s work. Closely look at photos of Nick Cave s photographs, 8. Orally compare and contrast how the context changes the content of the work of Nick Cave, Write down on butcher block paper reasons given by students. Look for 4 reasons to support your opinion. Group Discussion: (art history) 9. Create a list on butcher block paper of influences of Nick Cave s work, having the students orally giving at least two reasons for their decision. 10. Watch video clip of African Tribal dancing in full costume 11. Look at a photo of Performance Art by Joseph Beuys 12. Orally describe the history of Performance Art 13. Is Nick Cave s work Performance Art? Art Production 3

4 Materials: raffia, glue guns and hot glue sticks, cardboard, acrylic paint, smocks, brushes, water containers, paint trays or plates, newspaper, masking tape, newspaper, tissue paper, assorted items, trash bags, T-shirts, Scrap fabric, scissors, pencils, paper, markers, needles, thread, shredded paper, assorted fiber, sequins, socks, fake flowers, yarn, elastic, Sharpie Markers Demonstration/Hands-On Student Involvement: (art production) 14. Hot Glue/Raffia Demo to show students most effective way to attach raffia 15. Hand out t-shirts, have students write their name on tag of shirt or on inside collar 16. Encourage students to explore all of the materials available as they design their costume. Set up work stations based on types of materials available (hot glue guns, paper and other materials, fabric, tree branches (real and fake), cardboard) Demonstration: After a time of creating 17. Mask building demo Clean up Closure How has your opinion of sculpture changed since you came this morning? Adaptations: None needed, Assistance will be available during creation of costumes to help the students problem solve. Enrichment: Assortment of Masks, Costumes, Photos of African masks, Photos of Nick Cave s Soundsuits Activities for Early Finishers: Mask making and costume elaboration Assessment of Student Learning Artmaking: Students created a costume that covered them from head to toe using a t-shirt and at least two types of media.
