Bill Stanton Art From colorful team uniforms to the beauty of bodies in motion, the world of sport is full of visual stimulation. Children love to use artistic forms to express the things they see and learn about. This chapter gives students opportunities to explore the colors and symbols of sport themes using a variety of simple art media and techniques. 116

LESSON 1 Team Colors Students explore and discover primary and secondary colors and combine them to make their own team jerseys. National Standards: NA-VA.K-4.4, NA.VA.K-4.6 Skills: Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and cultures, making connections between visual arts and other disciplines Estimated Lesson Time: 25 minutes Teacher Preparation Materials Gather examples of NCAA basketball team jerseys. Visit to link to college and university home pages to find examples of college team jerseys. You can also visit (Select search for an image; select year, sport [basketball], gender and division desired.) Duplicate the Exploring Colors worksheet on page 119 for each student. 1 copy of the Exploring Colors worksheet on page 119 for each student 1 red, 1 yellow and 1 blue crayon or colored pencil for each student Examples of NCAA basketball team jerseys Background Information Color is one of the most important and widely used elements that enable us to readily identify groups. Quickly think of a response to this color combination: red, white and blue. Did you think of the American flag? Even when materials, design, figure or function are not specified, color combinations speak of belonging. Teams choose their colors carefully to connect them to their schools or other institutions (as the basketball jerseys you have collected show) and to identify themselves as a unit working together for a common goal. Working with a color wheel, we will begin to explore primary and secondary color combinations and apply them to some student-created basketball team jerseys. Introduce the Lesson Tell the students that you will be having some fun with color today. Talk about how teams identify themselves by the colors they choose for their basketball uniforms. Notice that uniforms always have at least two colors on them, one for the number and team name and a background color. Sometimes teams have three colors on their basketball jerseys. Say that when there are three colors, one of the colors is almost 117

always either black or white. Explain the difference between home and away uniforms and how the colors of the uniform (numbers and background) are often reversed to create two different uniforms. Follow These Steps 1. Distribute the Exploring Colors worksheets. 2. Talk about the color wheel. 3. Ask the students to color in the correct colors, using the two primary-colored crayons or pencils to make the secondary colors. 4. Identify the secondary color names. 5. Help the students notice that on the color wheel each secondary color comes between the two colors used to produce it. 6. Help the students choose color combinations for the basketball jerseys on the worksheet. 7. Ask the students to share the color combination they like best. Extend and Vary the Lesson Let the students experiment with combining colors. What unexpected colors did they come up with? Have students color the NCAA Basketball logo. Have a copy of the logo on hand so students will know which colors go where. Ask the students to make some jerseys with backgrounds and numbers that would be difficult to read. Discuss how they decided on those colors. Brainstorm for the practical benefits of having teams dress alike. (Wearing the same color jerseys makes it easier for people watching the game to tell the teams apart.) See if they can think of any other advantages to having teams dress in the same colors. (The same color jerseys makes it easy to see who is on your team so you do not throw the ball to the wrong person. It is easy for the audience to tell the teams apart by their uniforms even from seats far away.) 118

Exploring Colors Name Date Color the wedges with the color listed in each wedge. If a wedge has two colors listed, use both colors and see what new color you make. RED AND YELLOW RED YELLOW RED AND BLUE BLUE AND YELLOW BLUE FREE COLORS Choose the team colors for these jerseys following the instructions below. Black and white are free colors, and you can use them in any of the combinations if you like. Jersey 1: Color this jersey with two colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. Jersey 2: Color this jersey with two colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel. Jersey 3: Color this jersey with two colors that are separated by only one color wedge. Jersey 4: Choose any colors you like. 119

LESSON 2 Sporting Art Choosing from ready-made images in various print media, students make a basketball collage. National Standard: NA-VA.K-4.3 Skill: Using symbols in art making a collage Estimated Lesson Time: 35 minutes Teacher Preparation Materials Find some pictures or examples of collage artwork. Children s book author Eric Carle uses this technique in his illustrations. Duplicate the How to Make a Collage worksheet on page 122 for each student. Gather the materials listed. A variety of sports magazines and catalogs that feature many photos and illustrations 1 pair of scissors for each student 1 glue stick or container of glue for each student Blank 8 1/2- by 11-inch poster board for each student Colored markers or paints 1 copy of the How to Make a Collage worksheet on page 122 for each student Background Information Collage comes from a French word meaning to glue or paste. The art of collage dates back to the year 1912, when Pablo Picasso pasted a piece of printed oilcloth onto his painting Still Life with Chair Caning. Collage grew in popularity among the futurist artists and evolved from the addition of one or two pieces of fabric or paper onto paintings to art that is mostly or exclusively constructed by gluing fabric or paper to a surface. Introduce the Lesson Say that today you will be creating a piece of basketball art by using pictures from magazines and catalogs. Tell the students that this method of creating art is called collage. Say that collage is a word that comes from the French language and means to glue or paste. Tell the students they may choose to cover their entire poster board with collage materials or to cover only part of it and draw in pictures of their own. 120

Follow These Steps 1. Show some examples of collage artwork. 2. Talk about the artwork with the students. Notice what different types of media (art supplies, paint, chalk, pen, charcoal and so on) or other everyday items were used to make the art. 3. Distribute the How to Make a Collage worksheet. 4. Review the steps from the worksheet with the students. 5. Distribute the materials to make the collages. 6. Circulate and help the students as needed. Extend and Vary the Lesson Create color-themed collages. Have students choose pictures that are predominantly one color and confine that color to a particular place in the collage. Create shape-themed collages. Have students tear or cut all of their pictures in one or two shapes, creating, for instance, an all-triangle or all-circle collage. Create an assemblage collage, gluing on a variety of items such as pipe cleaners, fabric, small balls, plant material and so on. Group students together to make collages that emphasize one of the NCAA s ideals as they apply to basketball. For example, one group of students can create a sporting behavior collage, another does a competition collage and so on. Suggested Readings Carle, E The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Phiolmel Books: NewYork, NY. Martin, B Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Henry Holt & Co: New York, NY. 121

How to Make a Collage Name Date Look through the magazines. Cut or tear out lots of basketball pictures. Glue the pictures you like onto your poster board. Add words or drawings if you like. 122

LESSON 3 Sports Drawing Students make a jacket cover for their sports stories from the K 2 language arts lesson 7, Get in the Game. National Standard: NA-VA.K-4.4 Skill: Understanding and applying media techniques and processes Estimated Lesson Time: 25 minutes Teacher Preparation Materials Review the stories from language arts lesson 7, Get in the Game. Duplicate the My Basketball Story worksheet on page 125 for each student. 1 copy of the My Basketball Story worksheet on page 125 for each student Various art media (colored markers, pencils, crayons, chalk, washable paints and brushes or any combination of these) Stapler and staples, or other means of binding the covers to the stories, such as ribbon or yarn Background Information There is a saying in the publishing world that you should never blame the author for a book s cover. Author-illustrators are the obvious exception to this rule. They have greater control over their final product because they choose both the words and the pictures. They also choose the media for the artwork that is, the materials, such as watercolors, ink or crayons, and how they will be used. Author-illustrators have the best of both worlds. Your students are already authors, and today they will become the illustrators of their works as well. Introduce the Lesson Ask the students: What does an author do? What does an illustrator do? What do you think someone who is an author-illustrator does? (An author writes the words for the book or makes up the story. An illustrator creates the pictures for the book to match the author s words. An author-illustrator creates both the words and the pictures.) Explain that the picture that appears on the cover of a book helps the reader guess what the story is about. Say that today they will be illustrating a cover for their basketball stories. See language arts lesson 7 on page

Follow These Steps 1. Distribute the My Basketball Story worksheets. 2. Have the students write their names on the line below the word By, and on the line below the words Illustrated By. Underneath their names, have the students write what media they used to make the cover. 3. Help the students think about a scene from their stories that would show what the story is about. 4. Have them draw, paint or color a picture from their story for the cover. 5. Staple or otherwise bind the cover to their stories. Extend and Vary the Lesson Gather examples of books by author-illustrators (some suggestions: Eric Carle, Cynthia Rylant, Jan Spivey Gilchrist, Jan Brett). Talk about the colors the authorillustrators use. Look at cover artwork for several books. Read about the media on the title page. What materials did the illustrators use? Talk about the students favorite media for making art. Take a vote, then make a pie chart or a bar graph to reflect the class favorites. 124

LESSON 4 Sport Sculpture: Home Court Advantage Students cooperate to explore three-dimensional art using a variety of materials. National Standard: NA-VA.K-4.4 Skills: Understanding and applying media techniques and processes Estimated Lesson Time: 35 minutes Teacher Preparation Materials Gather the items listed under Materials. Cut away one of the long sides of each box. Duplicate the Home Court Advantage Blueprint worksheet on page 128 for each student. Secure volunteer help for working with kindergartners and first-graders. (Fifth- or sixth-graders would love to help.) 1 copy of the Home Court Advantage Blueprint worksheet on page 128 for each team Aprons, old shirts or smocks to protect clothing As many of the following as you can collect: Rectangular boxes (such as shoe or boot boxes), 1 for each team Small paper or plastic foam cups, or other cylinder-shaped recycled items Drinking straws, pipe cleaners or pencils (or any other item that is long and thin) Scissors Glue, tape Modeling clay Colored markers, pencils, crayons, chalk, washable paints and brushes (or any combination of these) Background Information Basketball requires cooperation from players, coaches, fans and officials to create an experience that is satisfying for everyone. It draws on a variety of skills cognitive, physical and emotional. Art requires these skills as well. Students will use the blueprint on the Home Court Advantage Blueprint worksheet to construct a three-dimensional basketball arena. The blueprint and suggested materials are meant as guides; they should not limit the student teams innovation and cooperation. In this exercise the process is more important than the product. 126

Introduce the Lesson Tell the students that today they will work together to make a model of a basketball court, and they may choose any of the materials you have collected to construct it. Invite them to look at the Home Court Advantage Blueprint worksheet for some ideas about what they might use for their projects. Follow These Steps 1. Divide students into teams of 2 or Give each team a copy of the Home Court Advantage Blueprint worksheet. 3. Make materials available as needed. The idea is for the students and the helpers to think through what they will need according to the blueprint. Each team will choose its materials. Extend and Vary the Lesson Brainstorm other three-dimensional projects that the students might want to undertake. Talk about some different materials the students might like to use to construct another three-dimensional project. Discuss what the students enjoyed about doing the project. What did they like least? Decide which materials were the easiest to work with and which materials were the hardest. Provide students with copies of the NCAA round logo and the NCAA Basketball logo. Have students paste these logos on the floor of their 3-D basketball court. 127
