Enrichment Unit: Meet the Master Artist Pablo Picasso Learning Goals: Gain an appreciation for art Be exposed to a variety of artist s techniques Try a variety of media and processes Learn about an artist s style of art Learn how art is preserved and displayed in art museums and art galleries Prepare artwork for a gallery display National Event: Art Gallery presentation Each week, children create art based on Pablo Picasso. Collect and store art in a safe place. Be sure to have at least 1 piece of art work from each child in attendance. In preparation for the gallery display, frame or mat all artwork. Often times art supply stores donate their scrap mat board. Construction paper or posterboard also works well. Be sure to add the artist s name to artwork. The theater area walls can be used as a display area. Simply attach a piece of Velcro to the back of the painting for easy hanging. A table top display may be added. In addition, large cardboard walls, screens or room dividers can be draped with dark fabric and used to display the artwork. Utilizing the Blue Crew room or lobby area also provides visible access to the gallery. Optional Resources: How Artist See Jr. by Colleen Carroll Getting to Know the World s Greatest Artists: Pablo Picasso by Mike Venezia

Enrichment Unit: Meet the Master Artist Pablo Picasso Week 1- Introduction (I hour total) Use the book Getting to know the World s Greatest Artists as a guide to introduce the children to Pablo Picasso. - He is known for many styles of art including painting, collaging and sculpting. - His paintings changed themes over the years and represented the blue period and rose period. - One famous art style is cubism, as an artist he analyzed how shapes formed objects. - Picasso s style of cubism evolved with the use of cut paper pieces. These pieces came from wallpaper or newspaper and were used to create images. This was the first introduction to collage in the world of fine art. - Picasso tried new and different things and often surprised people with his unusual painting style. - Pablo Picasso was born October 25, 1881 and over the course of his lifetime created more than 22,000 works of art. Display pictures of Picasso s work. Pass them around the group so the children can have a closer look. Have art books for children on display in the reading area or near the art table in the Creation Station. Offer an introduction to this style of art. Allow the children to create a picture. Week 1 Vocabulary Words: Artist Art Gallery

Faces Materials: 2 sheets of drawing paper 1 piece of construction paper Crayons or markers Scissors Glue stick Teacher prep: Provide materials Discuss Picasso s face paintings Demonstrate the process Assist with cutting as needed Child s Process Draw a face on each piece of paper Color the face with crayons or markers Cut the faces apart Use the parts to create a new different abstract fame Glue the face on the piece of construction paper Notes: This activity is a great introduction to how Picasso used simple lines to create ordinary faces and then rearranged the ordinary faces to appear like abstract faces.

Enrichment Unit: Meet the Master Artist Pablo Picasso Week 2- Understanding Art (I hour total) The children now have a basic understanding of art. Continue to display art books for children and encourage discussion. This week, help the children feel as though they are an artist. How do they feel when they look at a Pablo Picasso art? What colors do they like? Can they describe what they see in the painting? Show samples of different pieces of Picasso s work showing his paintings, sculptures and collages. Discuss how artists use different art medium (material, tools) to create their work. Create more art work. Save and frame art work. Week 1 Vocabulary Words: Feelings Art Forms Resources: Museum of Modern Art website:

Feelings About Art Materials: Art Books for Children Samples of Pablo Picasso s Art Teacher prep: Ask questions: What do you think Pablo Picasso was feeling when he created? How does the picture make you feel? What do you see in the picture? Do you like the colors? Why? Child s Process View the art work Describe how they make you feel Notes: Display responses on a large sheet of butcher paper

Enrichment Unit: Meet the Master Artist Pablo Picasso Week 3- I am an artist (I hour total) Explore a variety of materials. Discuss Cubism and how Picasso used shapes to create collage pictures Create with clay to represent Pablo Picasso s sculptured art Share samples of the children s art to continue to inspire creativity, discuss the pieces during circle time Parent Communication Create a Gallery Opening announcement to send home with the children to invite parents to attend the culminating event. Post sign on the Parent Welcome Board for the upcoming Gallery Opening. Consider purchasing a small ornate frame to use to frame your Gallery Announcement sign in the lobby. Post upcoming Gallery Opening on local Facebook page Post upcoming Gallery Opening on Preschool and Calendar web pages.

Collage Faces Materials: Pieces of colored paper Face pieces (sticky eyes, nose, etc.) Glue stick paper Teacher prep: Provide materials Show another sample of Picasso s mixed up face art work Demonstrate the process Child s Process Decide on the look of your mixed up face Choose pieces Create your face Share with the group Notes:

Geometric Collage Materials: Shape pieces (different colors, different materials) Glue Stick Paper Teacher prep: Share how Picasso used cubism to create collage art Provide materials Demonstrate how the shapes can overlap, connect and be grouped to create art Demonstrate the technique Child s Process Choose shapes Create a pattern in any direction Layer the shapes to create an abstract collage Secure in place with glue Notes:

Geometric Faces Materials: Rectangle pieces of paper (with facial features drawn or printed-eyes, ears, noses, mouth shapes, hair, etc.) 1 piece of construction paper Glue Stick Teacher prep: Show samples of Picasso s work Provide materials Demonstrate technique Child s Process Choose rectangle pieces to create your face Layer pieces Create an abstract piece of art Notes:

Sculptures Materials: Clay Paper plate Sculpting tools Teacher prep: Provide materials Show samples of Picasso s sculptures Demonstrate how to mold and form the clay Child s Process: Look at pictures for ideas Think of an item, shape or animal to create Mold and form the clay Notes: Cubism sculpture is another option. Create a 3-D piece with varied shaped objects, recycled containers, etc.

Flower Art Materials: Tissue paper squares Green strips of construction paper Paper Glue stick Markers, crayons and paint (optional) Teacher prep: Provide the materials Show a picture of Picasso s hand with flowers Demonstrate the technique Child s Process Choose either tissue paper flowers or drawn ones Create flowers on the page Dip hand in paint and press on paper or trace hand and cut out shape Notes:

Enrichment Unit: Meet the Master Artist Pablo Picasso Week 4- Gallery Opening The children are ready to present their masterpieces! A few days before the event, send out reminders and/or notes home with the children. Make sure all art work has been framed and child s name is clearly written on the front Finalize layout plan for gallery area Purchase any last minute needed supplies On the day of the Galley Opening, bring a camera so event pictures can be posted in the lobby and/or on Facebook. On the day of the Gallery Opening, before preschool begins hang artwork in designated area. Rope off area to keep it un-accessible to children until the gallery opens for viewing Do a walk through with the children and discuss what s going to happen when the parents arrive As parents arrive to the center, escort them to the gallery area. Optional: Many Gallery Openings serve snacks. The children can make simple appetizers and apple juice can be served in cups or flutes. This could be a wonderful photo opportunity. A picture could be taken with the child standing next to their creation. To tie the event back to what the children have studied, examples of Picasso s work can also be displayed, along with a short biography.
