1 KEY STAGE 1 ~ YEAR 2 Autumn Term MATERIAL MAN Material Man has a science focus which supports children in identifying materials, their uses and making comparisons between them. The theme is taught around texts that provide pupils with a material man stimulus. This leads on to scientific investigations and design and technology projects. Pupils are introduced to the unit by a fantastic Julia Donaldson day where they find sticks, have a picnic, hear many of Julia Donaldson stories and make 2D stickmen pictures. The fun continues with D adventures where the children spend time with their dads and granddads making artwork from natural materials. They also learn about Doug Hyde, the artist and use pastels and clay to work in his style. After half term the fun starts with cooking activity involving making, cooking and eating gingerbread men. This provides the opportunity to see the changes in the mixture and how the children can alter the shape of the gingerbread dough. The children focus on non-fiction writing genres as they learn to write instructions and also a write reports about their experiments. The children will be making lots of exciting Christmas crafts and preparing for the celebration of Christmas. WOW Factor Julia Donaldson day Cooking (and eating!)
