1 Lesson Plan for Teaching a Leisure Activity Lesson Title/Topic: Paper Tamborines Duration: min Supplies/Equipment Learning Objectives/Outcomes By participating fully in this activity, student will be able to: The student will be able to understand how to make different homemade instruments while using their creativity in the design of the instrument. Paper plates Rice Markers Stapler Scissors Stickers, feathers, Glue Paper Beans Introduction/Warm Up We developed a worksheet that will help open their minds to what their favorite activities are before decorating the tambourines. The student leaders will start off by introducing themselves to the participants. The leaders designed a worksheet with pictures of animals, sports, colors, favorite song, and musical instruments to open up ideas for designs to put on their instrument. The leaders will assist with any help needed for the participants while filling out the worksheet. Worksheet Pen/markers Summary of Tasks/Action Introduction with Samantha and Brittany to participants and vice versa. Samantha will start the introduction with the leaders and participants by playing the name game: the participants will use an animal or favorite item that begins with the first letter of their name. In order for the activity to run smoothly throughout the day Brittany will review the policies/procedures (Fun rules). If the participants listen well to the fun rules they will receive a smiley face as a token for their behavior. Introduction to the worksheet/warm up (students fill out the worksheet with help Worksheet Material handouts

2 of leaders) The instructors will hand out the worksheet to the participants. Samantha will then begin off by illustrating the worksheet reasoning (how the animals, musical instruments, sports, and colors will relate/reflect ideas to the project) Brittany will then explain what a tambourine is and other ways to design the tambourines such as through pie tins, plastic bowls, and ziploc bags will be introduced. Picture diagrams and models of the instruments will be shown before the activity. Samantha and Brittany will instruct that the students are sitting at their seats before the proper material can be passed out by the leaders due to the safety of the participants. Samantha And Brittany will then lay out any additional material needed for the project and will describe the materials and their uses by saying what goes where and show a model of the tambourine they will be making. This is where the rice, beans, foam stickers, and feathers will be applied for the stimulation of the material. Each participant will be handed a Ziploc bag to experiment with the sounds/rattling Brittany and Samantha will ask the students what the feeling reminds them of and how it feels to them. Samantha and Brittany will start off with making the tambourine so that the students can see how it is performed by explaining each step of the process in making a tambourine out of a paper plate. Students make the tambourine with the assistance. (This is where the use of the worksheet comes into play: their favorite color will be used by markers, their

3 favorite animals, sports, songs, and musical instruments will be expressed through the use of stickers/drawings. Encourage students to tap on the tambourine and talk about the sound that is produced. Teach students about rhythm and beat using tambourines. Ask each student to sit down with a tambourine. Clap your hands slowly, and ask students to tap or shake the tambourine each time you clap. Change the rhythm of your claps and encourage students to keep up. Once students are able to match the rhythm, play a name activity. Say your name and tap on a tambourine with each syllable. Go around the room and give each student an opportunity to say his name while tapping Clean up time (both leaders/partcipants) Samantha and Brittany will walk around with a bag so the participants can place their unused items in the bag. Wrap up time. The leaders will reflect with the participants on what they have done. Wrap- up/reflect - Closure Questions: 1. Did you find making musical instruments easy to do? 2. Do you think you could do this at home? 3. What other materials could you use to put inside the tambourines? 4. Does this activity make you think of more creativity? 5. Would this activity be one you share with your friends? 6. What was your favorite part of the activity?

4 Adaptations (For Students With Disabilities): If the participants have difficulty grasping noodles or foam stickers being used for the inside of the instrument we can adapt to a cup/spoon to scoop or bigger materials to grasp. We could adapt the size of the kazoo being used ex: adapt from toilet paper roll to a jar that is easier to hold. If the participants have trouble with peeling the stickers the adaptation could be used by replacing the stickers with precut magazine pictures to glue on. Adaptations can be made for the covering of the instrument with different materials. Safety Considerations Make sure the equipment is near the instructor and only in use when the instructor says so. Make sure the policies and procedures are clear to the participants.(see policies and procedures) The materials such as the rice, beans, pasta, stickers, feathers will be covered when it s not in use so participants do not put in mouth.

5 How to make the Tiny Tambourines: 1. They will begin decorating the plate of their liking with the materials available 2. The individuals have the option to glue paper strips on the outside of their tambourine if wanted. 3. Fold the paper plate in half when finished decorating. 4. The individuals will feel the rice/beans/pasta before it is put into their plate. 5. Scoop one cup of the material out for the inside of the tambourine and pour into their plate delicately. 6. The individual will hold the instruments ends down while the leader staples the ends together. 7. Now shake!

6 What is a Tambourine? The tambourine is an instrument consisting of a small drumhead with jingling disks fitted into the rim, usually played by shaking and striking with the hand. The word Tambourine actually means hit against. How to play a tambourine? 1. Learn the proper grip for holding a tambourine. A tambourine should be held in your non-dominant hand. Wrap your four fingers underneath the frame of the instrument and rest your thumb lightly against the head (if your tambourine has no head, rest your thumb across the top edge of the frame). Angle the head of the tambourine towards your dominant hand so that you have ample room to strike the head. Do not apply more pressure to the head with your non-dominant hand than necessary, as this will mute the sound

7 2. Apply the basic technique for striking a tambourine. Traditionally, the tambourine head should be struck with the tips of your fingers. Hold your four fingers together and quickly strike the head at a location about a third of the distance towards the center of the head from the frame. Striking in the center of the head will produce a muddled tone, as the head will not be able to resonate fully. 3. In our case: SHAKE, TAP, ROLL! Fun Facts about Tambourines: The tambourine is featured prominently in numerous Bible stories.in Biblical references, the tambourine is frequently played during times of celebration, such as weddings, births, military victories and religious ecstasies. The tambourine appeared as an instrument in modern military bands during the 1800s. It was further popularized in the United Kingdom and the United States when the Salvation Army began to use it prominently during their rallies. The folk-rock artist Bob Dylan wrote the song "Mr. Tambourine Man" in The song became a major radio hit for the band. The tambourine is mostly used nowadays in the folk music of the Middle East. Used in operas The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and U2 are some people who have used tambourines in their popular songs. Other ways to make a tambourine? 1. Use aluminum pie tins in place of the plates and glue together 2. Disposable bowls: Cut a circle of cardboard, the size of the bowl, to glue on top of the bowl. Place a few bells inside the bowl and glue the cardboard over the top. You can cover the cardboard with fabric or decorative paper before gluing it on. 3. Thick paper instead of paper plates: Choose a colorful piece of paper and fold it in half, placing the bells inside. Tape the edges of the paper closed. Use clear, adhesive contact paper to laminate the paper and keep it from ripping. Center the paper tambourine

8 on the contact paper, fold the contact paper over the tambourine, and trim away excess contact paper. After laminating you can cut the tambourine into a circle or other shape 4. Ziplock bag: Place a piece of cardboard inside the bag. With the bag laying on its side, place the bells on the cardboard, then place another piece of cardboard on top of the bells. Push the air out of the bag and zip it. Attach a handle, made from a strip of cardboard, with tape.
