5 Workshop 3: BUILDING INFORMATION WORKSHOPS MODELING THURSDAY 08 NOV., 13: BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING FOR MODULAR AND OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a new approach to project delivery that uses data to create an information-rich model to improve the design, construction, and operations of a building. BIM-enabled technology allows projects to be built inside the computer when costs are low and changes easy to implement, long before construction starts and changes become difficult and costly. This workshop will explore the future of BIM as a tool for Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and how modular and off-site construction can play a significant role in creating better buildings. We will look at how adding the third dimension to traditional 2D drawings avoids clashes before they occur and how adding the element of time - 4D - helps contractors optimize the construction process. Adding further intelligence to the model will provide integrated design teams to analyze what-if scenarios as they search for the best solutions. The power of an intelligent model will facilitate the increased use of off-site construction using standardized components, penalization and complete modules to be delivered to the construction site at the right time and ensure a perfect fit. Value for Participants: Understand the basic concepts of BIM and how it will change the way buildings are designed, constructed, andoperated. Discuss the barriers to BIM implementation such as interoperability of software, creating an environment of trust, legal and contractual obstacles, investment in a robust IT infrastructure and training, etc. Explore the opportunities BIM provides to create buildings that are sustainable (moving towards NetZero),constructed in a shorter time frame, and operated intelligently using the ever increasing amount of data available. Explore the opportunities BIM provides for modular and off-site construction. Workshop Facilitator: Klaas Rodenburg, MA, C.Tech., LEED AP BD+C Klaas is the CEO of the newly formed Alberta Centre of Excellence for Building Information Modeling (acebim) a virtual centre dedicated to create a more productive, competitive Alberta design, manufacturing, and construction industry through BIM enabled technologies. Klaas has been in the building design industry for more than 35 years. His experience includes transforming mechanical and electrical departments from manual drafting to Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), ranging from small office buildings to large hospitals and research facilities. Since 2003, Klaas has developed multi-disciplined integrated design processes for Stantec s Sustainable Solutions team. Klaas is a Certified Engineering Technician (C. Tech) in Alberta, and has an Arts Degree (1984) with a specialization in Industrial Design and a Master of Arts in Communication Technology (2009), both from the University of Alberta. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and currently leads the Stantec Sustainable Design Steering Committee.

6 Workshop 4 : ARCHITECTURAL WORKSHOPS DESIGN FRIDAY 09 NOV., 13: INTEGRATION PARADIGM FOR MODULAR AND OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION Although construction technologies are consistently improving and evolving, they are often viewed as abstract systems, and consequently, may be deployed to the detriment of building project cost, schedule, quality, and risk. This workshop emphasizes when, where, and why building systems should be developed and employed. The workshop will be divided into two parts: Part 1 Context of Industrialized Building and Part 2 Principle Tradeoffs of Offsite Construction. In Part 1, this workshop introduces the contextual criteria that foster successful offsite construction implementation. The following three contextual criteria have proven necessary for innovation to thrive within production industries: environment, organization and technology. In Part 2, this workshop discusses the principles of cost, schedule, and scope and how offsite modular construction may be leveraged to balance these construction principles. Each building project has a number of key performance parameters, including but not limited to: Cost, Time, Scope, Labor, Quality, and Risk. Key stakeholders of construction, such as the owner, designer, and builder, often have divergent values regarding these performance parameters. Offsite production has the potential to meet the diverse interests of team members. Value for Participants Environment: Understand how team characteristics, building type, and site location impact modular construction decisions. Organization: Define emerging integrated and lean contract structures and processes that allow for shared risk and reward and early manufacturing decision making in design. Technology: Discuss BIM, its role in project delivery, and link to CNC manufacturing. Understand the construction industry s historical lack of productivity Understand the key performance parameters of any building delivery project Understand the values and interests of key construction project stakeholders Discuss the role of offsite modular construction in meeting these performance parameters and divergent stakeholder interests Discuss the tradeoffs of offsite versus onsite across performance parameters Workshop Facilitator: Ryan E. Smith is Director of an interdisciplinary research group dedicated to construction efficiency and energy efficiency research called the Integrated Technology in Architecture Center (ITAC). He is a researcher, educator, author, and speaker on the integration paradigm and building technology, author of Prefab Architecture: published by Wiley in 2010, and co-editor of Building Systems published by Routledge in.

7 Workshop 5 : LEAN MANUFACTURING WORKSHOPS FRIDAY 09 NOV., 13: BENEFITS OF LEAN APPROACH FOR MODULAR AND OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION Lean principles can be applied beyond the traditional manufacturing environment. The ideas of maximizing value and minimizing waste have applications across all sectors including health care, not-for-profits, government, and construction.within a construction context, lean offers a production management-based approach to project delivery resulting in more productive methods to design and build facilities. This workshop will provide real examples of lean construction in practice and how these principles can be applied in Alberta. Value for Participants: Learn about the benefits of lean construction Discuss applications of lean manufacturing in Alberta Learn best practices in lean construction across the globe Discover new initiatives in the area of lean manufacturing that are currently being developed Workshop Facilitator: Gary E. Loblick is a Senior Executive Coach specializing in Process Innovation, with unique skills in operational implementation of transformation, revitalization, and turnaround programs, spending the majority of his career in large and small companies. 8 FRIDAY 09 NOV., 15: Workshop 6 : THE ROLE OF WOOD IN INNOVATIVE GREEN MODULAR (FACTORY-BUILT) CONSTRUCTION THE ROLE OF WOOD IN INNOVATIVE GREEN MODULAR (FACTORY-BUILT) CONSTRUCTION This workshop is jointly organized by Alberta Innovates Bio Solutions, Municipalities from Alberta, and the University of Alberta. Nearly 60% of Alberta is covered by forested lands, which are managed not only to obtain fiber, but also to sustain and enhance wildlife habitats, watercourses, and social and recreational activities. Provincially, the allowable annual cut is around 27 million cubic meters; the annual harvest volume always lies below that figure. Using these forested lands, Alberta produces $4.0 billion of forest products annually. Approximately 50% of these products are derived from pulp, while the remaining 50% are derived from solid wood products such as lumber, panel products, engineered products and components, and other secondary wood products. Unlike steel or concrete, wood products store carbon dioxide, resulting in less carbon dioxide emissions during the manufacturing process. Despite the environmental benefits of wood products, wood product manufacturing is currently lagging behind the requirements of modular construction plants. In response to this challenge, this workshop aims to improve wood product manufacturing through addressing topics such as dimensional accuracy, uniformity, overall quality, and cut-to-size. Value for Participants: This workshop is valuable for anyone interested in learning more about the benefits and challenges associated with using wood in modular (factory-built) construction. The following participants will especially benefit: Wood product manufacturers: Recognize how your product can be made desirable through implementing factory-built construction plants; Wood product grading and quality control agencies, and authorities: Learn how to assist wood product manufacturers with transitioning to the factory-built approach and adjusting to new products; Design community: Express your views on design requirements for using wood in modular construction; and Building code, standards, and other appropriate regulatory agencies: Ensure timely implementation of changes associated with manufacturing wood products using modular construction technologies.
