2 About BIM 2011 Dear colleague, For many years we have spoken of the value of information technology, and the better capture and use of information as a key enabler of integration and collaboration. It is a way of taking the waste out of the supply chain and delivering better value to clients. On 31 May 2011 the Government s Construction Strategy announced a firm commitment to requiring the use of BIM on all its assets by This is challenging, but not impossible. The expectation is that this rigid BIM commitment will prove influential in creating a new framework allowing us to adapt to new ways of working, greater professional integration, ultimately creating a fit for purpose industry able to be competitive both at home and overseas. On 19 October 2011 the Institution of Civil Engineers is hosting an industry facing conference to discuss BIM, where I will be presenting on behalf of the Government. This conference will examine the new UK Government requirement, and how the UK construction sector can best respond to the growing information demands of its private and public clients during the design, build and operation of assets. We will start with the client view, move on to supply chain delivery, examine how we support the process and end with a facilitated debate about asset management. I believe ICE BIM 2011 is an excellent opportunity for engineers, consultants, contractors, architects, owners and operators of construction projects to engage with this agenda.
