Every day is a challenge for us in the Application Department given our growing product portfolio, developments in raw materials and technology, as well as production process standardization. This value-added work can be done only with our strongly motivated colleagues in all departments, who are focused on safety, quality, delivery, cost, and the Inspire principles. The product that we manufacture at Mondi Taicang is back ears for diapers. As the top supplier of Procter & Gamble, we care a lot about the quality of our product. My job as machine leader is to head the team and, with the help of an online detection system, ensure no defective products are shipped to customers. I also have to check the quality of every shift. In my job as an electrician I have a great responsibility to maintain the machines in good condition and thus keep their availability at a high level. Fiber-Based Materials Cellulose fibers derived from renewable sources are the basis for sustainable packaging and paper solutions. We develop processes that improve the performance of pulp fibers. By making more out of less, we can benefit our customers and the environment. For example, our Advantage Protect sack kraft paper has a water-repellent surface and is formulated to maintain high tensile strength even in a wet environment. In a weight of 80 g/m2, Advantage Protect has a wet tensile strength three times higher than standard sack kraft paper. Printing Paper is an important means of communication. This is true of paper used either for direct communication or for packaging solutions. New digital printing technologies that allow more personalized communication are entering the market. One of these new technologies is high-speed inkjet printing. We have specifically developed the NEUJET range to allow that in graphic arts printing a wide range of dye and pigment inks can be used on the highquality matte and silk surfaces. All our high-speed inkjet papers carry the Mondi Green Range logo a symbol of high environmental performance in sustainable paper production. Food Safety Our innovative food packaging solutions ensure food safety and help avoid food spoilage. Packaged food products are protected against contamination and enjoy a longer shelf life. It can protect chilled and frozen goods for up to 24 hours subject to certain temperature constraints and conditions. 59 International Energy Efficiency, Self-Sufficiency, and Renewable Energy We have made significant energy-related investments to increase energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions. Our carbon emission reduction (per unit of saleable production) reached 28% in 2015 against a 2004 basis. We also replace fossil-based energy with renewable energy wherever practical. The share of renewable energy in the overall fuel consumption of our mills was 59% in Our electrical self-sufficiency reached 103% in Wood is one of our primary raw materials, so we make sure our wood comes from sustainable, responsible sources. All the wood that we source is Chain-of-Custody certified either to FSC or PEFC standards (66% in 2015) or meets our company s minimum requirement that complies with the standard for Controlled Wood (FSCSTD ). We are not involved in illegal logging or deforestation. Biodiversity We identify and protect High Conservation Value (HCV) areas within our landholdings. We do not convert natural forests, riparian areas, wetlands, or protected areas. In the Komi Republic, Russia, we are involved in a long-term multi-stakeholder process with NGOs, local authorities, and communities to identify and protect some of the last remaining HCV intact forest landscapes in Europe. 57 Innovative Forests support the livelihoods of many people around the world and benefit our environment by regulating climate and water cycles and preventing soil erosion. All our owned and leased forests (located in Russia and South Africa) are sustainably managed and 100% certified to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. 60 Sustainable. Water Water is an essential resource that sustains life and is vital to our forests and manufacturing operations. The growing scarcity of water is a global issue. Therefore, we focus on managing our water use wisely. We have completed water impact assessments at all our forestry operations and mills in collaboration with our stakeholders to responsibly manage our water usage and improve our water quality and efficiency. In 2015, we reduced our contact water consumption by 5% against a 2010 basis. Water Discharge Our contact water (water from production processes) is properly treated in wastewater treatment plants before being returned to the natural environment. Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production We continually focus on improved resource efficiency in all our manufacturing processes and responsibly manage our emissions, discharges, and waste. We regularly monitor process waste, and where recycling or reuse is not possible, we either treat our waste, combust it in incineration facilities, or send it to landfill as a last resort. Our waste sent to landfill was reduced by 22% in 2015 against a 2010 basis. 58

61 Safety at Work Although Mondi is among the safety leaders in the industry (based on total recordable case rate), the nature of our processes involves some high-risk activities. As a result, we focus on our top risks and develop the necessary action plans to engineer the risks out and manage the residual risks through robust procedures and controls.
