Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO IAO News June 2015
Fraunhofer IAO The basis for all work undertaken at the Fraunhofer IAO is a deep conviction that business success in a globalized arena is contingent on an ability to profitably leverage new high-tech potentials. In order to optimally exploit these opportunities, companies must be capable of developing and implementing customer and employee-oriented technologies faster than their competitors. Work organization concepts must be simultaneously innovative and anthropocentric. A systematic design, in other words, is the outcome of pooled management and technical expertise. This holistic perspective when it comes to project processing ensures that equal consideration is given to commercial success, employees interests and social consequences. Through its close cooperation with the Institute for Human Factors and Technology Management (IAT) of the University of Stuttgart, Fraunhofer IAO unites basic university research with applied science and business practice. More than m 2 of offices, laboratories and technical installations are available to carry out contracted research. Our customer-focused range of services is based on the following areas of business: Corporate Development and Work Design Service and Human Resources Management Engineering Systems Information and Communication Technology Technology and Innovation Management Mobility and Urban Systems Engineering Further information twitter.com/iaostuttgart
overview of topics TECHNOLOGY THAT FEELS GOOD In the EMOIO project launched at the beginning of the year, Fraunhofer IAO is working with partners from research and industry to study how they might record and classify the emotional experiences that take place when a human being interacts with a technical product. The goal is to develop emotion-sensitive assistance systems that adapt to the mood and personal needs of users. LAUNCH OF HMI 4.0 JOINT RESEARCH PROJECT How do technological developments change the way humans and technology interact in industry? And how can companies make use of these changes? As part of the HMI 4.0 joint research project, Fraunhofer IAO is working with industrial partners to develop scenarios and solutions to address these issues. SIMULATION FOR CIVIL PROTECTION In 2012, 40 researchers, technicians and operators from 17 European institutions joined forces in the EU s CRISMA project to develop simulation and modeling solutions that help public authorities and rescue teams prepare for crisis situations. Now to conclude the project, the consortium will present its concepts for modeling and simulation.
TECHNOLOGY THAT FEELS GOOD Brain-computer interface to improve interaction with technology through emotion recognition Assistance systems have great potential to help users in a wide variety of situations. When they access external user information to do so, however, things often become problematical. With the objective of removing these barriers to usage, Fraunhofer IAO is working with research and industrial partners in the EMOIO project to develop a neuroadaptive system that will measure the users brain activity to determine whether they are pleased or displeased with a system-initiated assistive action. From neuroscientific basic research to mobile application As a first step, different neuroscientific methods are being investigated regarding their potential for real-time measurement in natural interaction scenarios. Subsequently, algorithms for real-time emotion recognition and classification will be developed. On this basis, a brain-computer interface will be created that is capable of recording and evaluating users subjective feelings (approval/rejection) as to the appropriateness of system-initiated behaviors and feed this information back to an adaptive assistance system. In this way, the brain-computer interface enables assistance systems to adapt their behavior precisely to users individual preferences and needs. Using neurophysiological feedback for the developed system does not require direct, active feedback, hence the users are not interrupted during the interaction process. Once developed, the system will be tested in three different fields of application, whereby it will be integrated into an adaptive web interface, a driver assistance system, and a system for human-robot cooperation. NeuroLab measures brain activity during human-technology interaction Launched in January, the EMOIO project will run until the end of The project scientists are using Fraunhofer IAO s new NeuroLab to evaluate different neuroscientific methods (electroencephalography and functional near infrared spectroscopy) to determine their potential for measuring emotions. The work in the NeuroLab will be mainly focused on the question of how far a combination of the two methods can improve the accuracy of the classification algorithms. Moreover, the scientists will deal with the challenge to realize emotion recognition in real time and during the interaction process. 5 LAUNCH OF HMI 4.0 JOINT RESEARCH PROJECT Fraunhofer researchers and industrial partners develop user-generated operational aids Fraunhofer IAO conducted a trend study to identify and examine crucial fields of action for making human-technology interaction successful in future manufacturing. The study focused on questions related to ergonomic HMI design and the integration of new technologies such as social media, interaction and recognition technologies. Scientists at Fraunhofer IAO set up the HMI 4.0 joint research project as a way to put their findings into practice. Under the scientific leadership of the Fraunhofer IAO, manufacturing companies, machine and plant manufacturers, system integrators and technology and software suppliers develop user-generated operational aids that they then turn into prototypes. We have users and experts from a wide variety of different areas on board, which helps us to approach the topic from var ious angles, explains project leader Dr. Matthias Peissner of Fraunhofer IAO. The aim is to develop a system that supports users to successfully manage disruptive incidents, and to make knowledge accessible for and usable by other users. Knowledge management with HMI 4.0 The researchers deliberately chose to focus on operational aids. Operational aids can provide efficient support for error situations and other action areas in automated processes, says Peissner. In particular, the system will make it easy for employees to share their knowledge of specific error situations and thus contribute to user-generated operational aids. It will also ensure the scope, accuracy and instructive quality of operational aids and encourage employees to share what they know. To achieve this, the experts are also factoring in incentive systems at the HMI and organizational level. The joint research project aims to address the following issues: How can users provide their knowledge efficiently using the interface? How can the quality of operational aids be guaranteed? How can users be motivated to share their knowledge with others? What do appropriate business models look like? Dovetailing research and practical work In addition to what they gain from the research conducted by Fraunhofer IAO, participants in the joint research project will especially benefit from the interdisciplinary and cross-industry composition of the consortium. The group includes production plant operators such as Daimler, machine manufacturers such as Oerlikon and Broetje-Automation, as well as software and technology companies such as COPA-DATA, Getac and Siemens. The HMI 4.0 joint research project is open to all economic partners with an interest in innovative approaches in the field of HMI design, and who are actively seeking to gain a competitive advantage Contact Fraunhofer IAO, Dr. Matthias Peissner, David Blank Phone , matthias.peissner@iao.fraunhofer.de david.blank@iao.fraunhofer.de

Kicked off in 2012, the EU s CRISMA project (modeling crisis management for improved action and preparedness) supports administrative bodies and relief agencies at all federal levels to prepare for such crises using customizable and combinable simulation tools. To assist civil protection players in planning and training by providing systematic support in the form of modeling and sim ulation, the CRISMA research team has spent the last three years developing a decision support concept, a software framework and specific models. These were tested in 2015 among numerous strategic and tactical decision makers, using fictional events such as chemical spills, cold spells or traffic accidents, as well as historical events for example, the earthquake in L Aquila, Italy, or flooding in La Rochelle on the French Atlantic coast. All of these solutions were presented on June 4, 2015, to a large audience of crisis managers, mission leaders, public authorities and organizations from various European countries. The findings met with consid erable interest. simulate alternative strategies for handling such events. Such data could also be used to provide support for decisions about investment for instance, in suitable vehicles or for tactical concepts, such as determining whether to establish a treatment station for a certain number of injured in a particular location. In this way, operational concepts and action plans can be developed and tested. The concept for conducting and evaluating exercises will be published by the German Red Cross in a series on security research and is set to be combined in additional projects with other organizational solutions and IT systems. Team on the DRIVER EU project will continue to develop and test concept Researchers at Fraunhofer IAO are continuing with the systematic experimentation in crisis management in the EU s DRIVER project (driving innovation in crisis management for European resilience), in which they join up with other European agencies, including Germany s Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and Sweden s Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). Researchers develop concepts to support exercises and decision-making In cooperation with the German Red Cross, Fraunhofer IAO has worked up a support concept for large-scale exercises. With it, the vital time needed for activities can be measured and central success factors for an action plan for a mass casualty incident can be determined. This makes it possible to evaluate local exercises for accidents or natural catastrophes more systematically; at the same time, it can use real data to Contact Fraunhofer IAO, Dr. Wolf Engelbach Phone wolf.engelbach@iao.fraunhofer.de Further information
