2 overview of topics Fraunhofer IAO MISSION: CITY OF THE FUTURE Science Year 2015 is devoted to the city of the future. On February 19, Fraunhofer IAO joined representatives of communities, science, industry and the general public in Berlin to present recommendations for how we can sustainably develop our cities and equip them for the future. As part of a campaign tackling the major questions around the city of the future, Fraunhofer IAO is also informing city authorities, companies and individuals and helping them find the answers. The basis for all work undertaken at the Fraunhofer IAO is a deep conviction that business success in a globalized arena is contingent on an ability to profitably leverage new high-tech potentials. In order to optimally exploit these opportunities, companies must be capable of developing and implementing customer and employee-oriented technologies faster than their competitors. Work organization concepts must be simultaneously innovative and anthropocentric. A systematic design, in other words, is the outcome of pooled management and technical expertise. This holistic perspective when it comes to project processing ensures that equal consideration is given to commercial success, employees interests and social consequences. Through its close cooperation with the Institute for Human Factors and Technology Management (IAT) of the University of Stuttgart, Fraunhofer IAO unites basic university research with applied science and business practice. More than m 2 of offices, laboratories and technical installations are available to carry out contracted research. Our customer-focused range of services is based on the following areas of business: Corporate Development and Work Design Service and Human Resources Management Engineering Systems Information and Communication Technology Technology and Innovation Management Mobility and Urban Systems Engineering Further information twitter.com/iaostuttgart INTELLIGENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT Infrastructure operators are already pushing the boundaries of what conventional energy management systems can cope with. This led Fraunhofer IAO and partners from the research and industrial communities to join forces as part of the SmartEnergyHub project to develop a smart data platform that reduces energy consumption by optimizing operational processes. LOGWERT ADDS TO HEILBRONN S STATUS AS A RESEARCH HUB On March 1, 2015, the LOGWERT competence center in Heilbronn started its work. The center brings together Fraunhofer IAO s expertise in mobility and urban systems engineering with Heilbronn University s specialist knowledge of logistics. Initiated by Heilbronn-Franken s Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the project is receiving funding of one million euros from the Ministry of Finance and Economics Baden-Württemberg. IP MANAGEMENT AWARD 2015 Fraunhofer IAO and Management Circle have recognized companies that have demonstrated excellence in the field of commercial property rights. Winners Elmos Semiconductor AG, Nemak and Rogers Germany GmbH impressed the jury with their sustainable practices for implementing new IP management structures. The award ceremony took place as part of the Patente 2015 congress on March 3. SERVICE RESEARCH AWARD On March 5, Thomas Meiren, service researcher and head of department at Fraunhofer IAO, was awarded the 2015 CFSMI Award in recognition of his success in researching and promoting new services. The Confederation for Services Management International made the presentation as part of the 87 th AFSMI Chapter Meeting, which carried the title Transformation of Organizations for Successful Solution Business. ELECTROMOBILITY MADE FUN What suits me better? An electric car, an e-bike, or maybe a pedelec? There are many ways to be electrically mobile and new prod ucts are coming out all the time. Elektr-O-Mat is an online game that helps people get a better overview and find out which option is best for them and their individual transportation needs. Survey on the sharing economy Is the sharing economy just media hype or is it in fact a development we should be taking seriously? What risks and opportunities does this growing economic system hold for conventional businesses? Fraunhofer IAO is examining these questions in an online survey.

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the SmartEnergyHub research project is developing a solution that revolves around a sensor-based smart data platform. Those involved in the project include Fraunhofer IAO and five other experienced partners. The scope for optimizing existing energy management systems is becoming increasingly limited because solutions are not making use of all available sensor data and meter values. New approaches are called for that identify and exploit savings potential by taking into account all available information. With this in mind, the research project partners are taking a forecasting- and market-based approach to open up new energy optimization opportunities for infrastructure operators. Pilot project at Stuttgart airport The ICT solutions that have been developed will be tested in a pilot project at Stuttgart airport. A user group will also be set up to accompany the project, for the purpose of providing other infrastructure operators with current research findings, discussing individual questions that the partners may have, and encouraging people to share their experience with one another. Companies that want to optimize the way energy is used in their infrastructure can still participate in the user group. The kickoff event is scheduled for June 25, Fraunhofer IAO, Florian Maier Phone florian.maier@iao.fraunhofer.de Partners Fichtner IT Consulting AG Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH (Stuttgart airport) Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS in-gmbh seven2one Informationssysteme GmbH Fraunhofer s LOGWERT competence center was opened on March 1, The new Fraunhofer Application Center will provide business and communities in the Heilbronn-Franken area with an application-oriented research structure that focuses on the interface between logistics and added value on the urban and regional level. Lo cated within the university s research incubator at Heilbronn s Zukunftspark Wohlgelegen technology park, the competence center will support partners from industry with its extensive exper tise in logistics research. Since 2007, Fraunhofer IAO has been hard at work researching tomorrow s smart urban mobility, and has contributed its expertise to several projects, both as part of Fraunhofer System Research for Electromobility FSEM II and for the Stuttgart model electromobility region. Via the institute, LOGWERT is directly connected to the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft network and has access to all of its research programs, including Autonomous driving, Industry 4.0 and Morgenstadt (city of the future). All of these projects are methodically dedicated to furthering business success through the use of new technologies that boost profits and provide added value. Prof. Dr. Anette Weisbecker, deputy director of Fraunhofer IAO, believes that cities and regions will be at the center of future developments regarding the way we live and the way business operates. Who s to say how digitization or the trend towards sustainability might change city districts, industrial zones or entire regions? LOGWERT is our way of making headway in developing futureready strategies and solutions. In that regard, the new Neckarbogen urban district in Heilbronn makes for the perfect living lab. Businesses in the Heilbronn-Franken region can collaborate with LOGWERT in a variety of ways. As partners in the LOGWERT Innovation Network, they have the opportunity to work with the researchers and other partner companies to develop and implement innovative strategies geared towards sustainable logistics in the Heilbronn-Franken region. This includes a comprehensive analysis of their individual situation, as well as personalized rec ommendations for implementing innovative logistics solutions. Aside from the exclusive insights gained, partners also benefit from the in-depth expert dialog among the crosssector members of the innovation network. The competence center also takes on projects in the area of transportation and logistics direct from companies in the region. Prof. Dr. Tobias Bernecker, dean of studies for transportation services and logistics at Heilbronn University, will be heading up the competence center. Steffen Braun, head of»urban Systems Engineering«at Fraunhofer IAO, will be deputy head. Through its links with the university, LOGWERT will be closely involved in the work of the Logistics and transport expert research area. The Land of Baden-Württemberg s Ministry of Finance and Economics will be supporting LOGWERT over a four-year period with funding of one million euros. IP MANAGEMENT AWARD 2015 Honors for outstanding patent management SERVICE RESEARCH AWARD Thomas Meiren receives CFSMI award for his contribution to service engineering When research is a fundamental part of a company s activity, it s hard to overstate the importance of protecting intellectual property, or IP for short. Having a sound IP strategy is an essential part of implementing a system of patents and protections to safeguard your own innovations against competitors. Since 2008, Fraunhofer IAO has been presenting the IP Management Award to companies that have established outstanding IP management. After an analysis of benchmark data on over 90 companies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, five were nominated for this year s award. The winners are all companies that just started implementing their outstanding IP management systems in recent years. 3 rd prize: Elmos Semiconductor AG Third prize went to Elmos Semiconductor AG, a Dortmundbased company that has been continuously expanding its IP management system since By providing training for its R&D and sales employees and establishing an IP committee, Elmos has raised awareness of the importance of patents throughout the company. This also allowed Elmos to land sev eral major customers. 2 nd prize: Nemak Mexican automotive supplier Nemak took home second prize. Founded in 1979 and now with 36 production sites worldwide, Nemak has always invested in research and development. Although Nemak established its global IP management system only in 2013, in just two years the company has implemented strategic IP management that goes far beyond property rights administration. For instance, employees from IT management helped develop and implement strategies for ensuring that information remains protected. The particular challenge here was to essentially standardize IP management worldwide while retaining regional flexibility. 1 st prize: Rogers Germany GmbH First prize went to Rogers Germany GmbH, a manufacturer of metal-ceramic substrates as well as microchannel coolers for the power electronics industry. The company launched its IP management system in 2012, and since then has established integrated IP management, leading to a dramatic transformation of its corporate culture. R&D, sales and marketing employees are trained in IP and actively involved in IP processes. On a strategic level, the company s IP management team initiates innovation workshops with the R&D department. The focus here is on creating new inventions that allow Rogers to expand its IP portfolio especially for strategically relevant topics. The jury was impressed by the active role played by the IP department and also praised the swift and professional way Rogers was able to put a modern IP management system into practice. Fraunhofer IAO, Truong Le Phone truong.le@iao.fraunhofer.de Further information Competition in the services market has become more and more acute in recent years. Among the biggest challenges facing service providers are the pressure to continuously offer new or improved services while keeping one step ahead of the competition and simultaneously meeting customer requirements and expectations. Meiren s research helps industry players develop and provide better services that are tailored to their customers. R&D management improves services Any service provider wishing to maintain or improve their position in the market has to manage their service sector research and development work effectively. In his article titled R&D Management for Services, which appeared in the book Taking the Pulse of Economic Development published by Fraunhofer IAO scientists Dieter Spath and Walter Ganz, Meiren gives an overview of how service research and business practice dovetail with one another. He also presents practical solutions for improving the transfer of expertise in the service management field. It is this achievement that the Confederation for Services Management International recognized when they honored Meiren with the 2015 CFSMI Award. With this award the judges also paid tribute to Meiren s longterm cooperation with the Association for Services Management International and their educational and research center in Germany, to which he regularly contributes expertise gathered in his role as head of the Service Development Competence Team at Fraunhofer IAO and due to his research interest in new services development and design. Through numerous research and consulting projects, Meiren has already played a significant part in making the study of new services more commonplace in academic and industry circles. Also noteworthy is that he cofounded service engineering as a discipline. CFSMI recognizes outstanding service professionals The Confederation for Services Management International is a cross-border association for service managers in the hightech service industry that interlinks the six national Associations for Services Management International (AFSMI) Chapters in Europe. Every year, the confederation presents the CFSMI Award in recognition of outstanding experts in the services field. Fraunhofer IAO, Thomas Meiren Phone thomas.meiren@iao.fraunhofer.de

But how do you choose the right mobility option for you? Who benefits from electric cars in the first place? Elektr- O-Mat wants to put these uncertainties to bed with 15 simple questions that help people determine the right electromobility solution for them. It s a playful way of getting an overview of the products currently out there, while encouraging people to think a bit more about how they get around. A good, objective overview of the electromobility options available Elektr-O-Mat makes no attempt to adopt a moralizing stance, or even encourage people to buy an electric vehicle. The underlying philosophy is simply to inform people about the range of electric vehicles available. In the form of a participative game, it makes the topic accessible and tangible for everyone. Transparent rules A thorough description of how the Elektr-O-Mat game works is found on the website, including how it reaches its decision. This includes the points awarded for specific answers and how this affects the ranking, in addition to a transparent account of assumptions in the model. Elektr-O-Mat is a participative game created as part of the Online-Schaufenster Elektromobilität R&D project. The game aims to get the general public engaged with the topic of electromobility in line with the motto Join the discussion Get involved Help shape the future. Funded by Baden- Württemberg s Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, the initiative is being undertaken by the project consortium of e- mobil BW GmbH the State Agency for Electric Mobility and Fuel Cell Technology Baden-Württemberg, YellowMap AG and Fraunhofer IAO. The sharing of predominantly private goods and services is becoming increasingly commercialized, driven in part by the possibilities afforded by modern information and communication technology. Particularly in the mobility and tourism industries, global players are seeing remarkable rates of economic growth as a result. Can these sharing principles be transferred and applied to the business models of established companies? Does the sharing economy present new market opportunities for traditional manufacturing companies? In which areas is such potential most likely to be found? And how are established companies dealing with the competition generated by the sharing economy today? Fraunhofer IAO is examining these and other questions in an online survey funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Finance and Economics. Representatives of companies and business-related institutions in the Land of Baden-Württemberg and across Germany are invited to participate by visiting It takes about 20 minutes to answer the questions. The survey is expected to run until mid-april Participants in the study can receive a free summary of the results upon request. Fraunhofer IAO, Helge Spindler, Simone Martinetz Phone ,-2394 helge.spindler@iao.fraunhofer.de simone.martinetz@iao.fraunhofer.de Elektr-O-Mat operates on a principle of common sense when it comes to mobility parameters and practices, asking only questions that people are in a position to answer. Elektr-O-Mat then uses the answers provided to the 15 questions to generate a ranking that shows the player which electric vehicle or product is the one for them. Fraunhofer IAO and e-mobil BW GmbH the State Agency for Electric Mobility and Fuel Cell Technology Baden-Württemberg, worked together to rank the electromobility options according to the answers supplied in the individual questions, a ranking based on the empirical findings of studies in the area as well as expert workshops. The classification covers seven electromobility solutions: electric cars, hybrid vehicles, pedelecs, public transport, e-car sharing and pedelec sharing.
