WHAT IS LIST 3

INTRODUCTION An emerging RTO The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is an emerging Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, the environment and IT. Created in 2015 from the merger of two former Public Research Centres (CRP Gabriel Lippmann and CRP Henri Tudor), LIST brings together a critical mass of researchers and innovation experts to develop innovative and competitive solutions in response to the key needs of Luxembourgish and European companies. 4

MISSION & VISION Mission The overall objective of LIST is to transform scientific knowledge into technologies and develop innovative solutions to improve the quality of life of Luxembourgish and European citizens, and to create business opportunities for Luxembourgish companies. Vision LIST's vision for 2025 is to firmly consolidate its position as a "Research and Technology Organization" (RTO) in Luxembourg, with a growing presence and reputation in Europe and beyond. LIST wishes to accelerate the development and deployment of its technologies and innovations in support of Luxembourg s socio-economic development 5

WHAT ARE SMART CITIES?

A DEFINITION THAT WE LIKE A smart sustainable city is an innovative city that uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) and other means to improve quality of life, efficiency of urban operations and services, and competitiveness, while ensuring that it meets the needs of present and future generations with respect to economic, social and environmental aspects ITU-T Focus Group on Smart Sustainable Cities, Smart sustainable cities: An analysis of definitions, Focus Group Technical Report 13

WORKING ON THE SMART CITY IN LUXEMBOURG 19

THE CHALLENGE The TIR Study has set the strategic challenge for the country and its cities in the near and not so near future, e.g.: Transform the entire energy infrastructure and, especially the electricity grid of Luxembourg, from a centralized to a distributed energy system, and from fossil fuel and nuclear generation to renewable energy. In the new system, every business, neighborhood, and homeowner becomes the producer of electricity, sharing their surplus with others on a smart Energy Internet The current mobility and transportation model based on the Second Industrial Revolution proves itself unsustainable, producing massive negative externalities and reaching its limits. With the forecasted fastpaced rise of its population (above 1 million inhabitants predicted in 2050 plus some 320,000 cross-border commuters expected), Luxembourg will have to provide solutions for the projected increased mobility and transport needs. Transform its stock of 140,000 residential buildings and 5,000 commercial and industrial buildings and its existing infrastructure into smart, digital buildings and networks across an Internet of Things platform to usher in a Third Industrial Revolution 20

OUR RECENT AND CURRENT PPP ACTIVITIES ON SMART CITIES

LIST ROLE IN THE RDI FOR THE SMART CITY Integrate innovative environmental and digital technologies coupled with big data analytics to improve Environment, and resource use and management Mobility of people and goods Built infrastructure functionality, construction and management Citizen life experience (Boyd Cohen. The smart city wheel)

SUCCESS SUSTAINABLE URBAN CONSOLIDATION CENTRES FOR CONSTRUCTION Objective Decrease the negative impacts of urban freight transportation associated with construction (e.g. congestion, pollution, noise, accidents) Reduce building and renovating costs Improve the use of existing transport infrastructures Increase the cooperation and coordination among all the stakeholders of the construction supply chain Develop reusable methods and tools. Focus / Topics Analysis of real data from four pilot construction sites in France, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain Identification of collaborative tools, decision support systems and new practices for the supply chain, including the adoption of Construction Consolidation Centres Expected results and impacts The project will deliver a new collaborative approach and sustainable business models for the construction supply chain, focusing on distribution networks, construction sites and reverse logistics. Public authorities will benefit from the assessment of new policies, regulations and improvements in infrastructure design. Transport companies will benefit from the estimation of the potential savings related to the implementation of CCCs and to an optimized supply chain. Construction Companies will benefit from more accurate ROI estimates, thus facilitating their investment decisions. Research organisations will benefit from precise data on the potential for the optimization of the supply chain and the performance of CCCs. National partner Coordinator: LIST Total costs: 3,242,848M EC contribution: 3,242,848M Start date: 1/5/2015 Duration: 36 months

MUV MOBILITY URBAN VALUES Objective MUV is a digital platform that gamifies urban commuting and fosters sustainable habits. Focus / Topics Behavioural change through positive incentives. Local businesses and brands valuable interactions according to different game dynamics. Evidence based tool for planners and policy-makers. Expected results and impacts The project involves 6 different neighbourhoods in very diverse cities: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Fundão, Ghent, Helsinki and Palermo. With those citizens we will co-create and test: a multiplatform mobile app and a wearable app a distributed network of environmental data monitoring stations a data-driven web-based mobility management tool. What we expect is: 25% individual modal split improvement towards sustainability 35% CO2 emissions reduction for active users LIST s contribution LIST will be in charge of MUV s Technological Platform for the mobility management. National partner Coordinator: PUSH Total costs: 3,9M EC contribution: 3,9M Start date: 01/06/2017 Duration: 36 months

H2020 CROSSCULT EMPOWERING REUSE OF DIGITAL CULTURAL HERITAGE IN CONTEXT-AWARE CROSSCUTS OF EUROPEAN HISTORY Objective Mixing innovative ICT technologies to spur a change in the way European citizens appraise History Expected results and impacts The project involves 6 different neighbourhoods in very diverse cities: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Fundão, Ghent, Helsinki and Palermo. Focus / Topics. Multi-level, cross-repository interconnection of venues and digital cultural heritage resources. New technologies for smart venues and cities. Personalized and context-aware experiences. Business models for new cultural experiences. LIST s contribution Coordinator: LIST Total costs: 3.7M LIST budget: 698K 100%funded EC contribution: 3,9M Start date: 01/06/2017 Duration: 36 months National partner

OUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

TOWARDS DISTRICT LEVEL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT DIGITAL BELVAL Luxembourg and its cities, which are facing a rapid expansion in the last years, are an ideal testbeds for bringing together information technology, renewable energy, people and smart transport networks, in line with the vision to transform the country into the first nation-state of the smart green Third Industrial Revolution. Luxembourg brings together strong potential for innovation at an extraordinary, unique site: Belval, which, given the quality of its infrastructure, its aesthetic appeal and industrial heritage, unites universities, research centres and incubators. It fosters diversity, particularly in terms of languages and nationalities, while it invests in collective intelligence.

CONNECTED AND AUTONOMOUS MOBILITY: GREATER REGION CROSS-BORDER DIGITAL TESTBED In line with the national initiative for the creation of a Digital Cross Border Test Bed for Connected and Autonomous Driving linking Luxembourg with France and Germany, LIST is launching a tender to acquire an open and modular AV platform and is working on a number of project proposals around the topics of: Integrating AV s into public transport Assessing the impact and the public acceptance of AV s Using AV s to improve the air quality in urban areas Using 5G to enable safer and more powerful AV s
