3 Smart X as overall Trend Smart - Adjective seems to be an attribute for technological developments, which are mainly characterized by intelligent, elegant and astute (=smart) functions.. Smart Home Smart Building Smart Service Smart TV Smart Assistant Smart Governance Smart City Smart Community Smart Phone Smart Car Smart Grid Smart Traffic Intelligence ICT (Information- and Communication-Technologies) 2

4 Smart X: ICT-based developments for smart products, systems and services in economy and society - Without Smart X-enhancements many products and systems will loose competitiveness and market potential. - Interdisciplinary and intersectoral approach and co-operations - Already today many relevant technologies available. - In foreseeable future we aspect new technological developments which further improve (quantitative und qualitative) functional and service capabilities of systems. - These technologies enable a system or product, to perceive the environment in real time and with sufficient details, to process these impressions cognitively, to define dependencies and to judge ( Intelligence ) and to trigger problem appropriate (re-)actions. Essential is, that all objects, which are determining function, capacity and efficiency, work together in the overall system in a reliable and safe manor. 3

5 Smart Energy German Technology Programs In recent years not only in Europe, Germany the contribution of ICT to energy and climate specific solutions Smart Energy - was given more priority and significance. German energy related ICT programs - BMWi: Smart Grids made in Germany, Cooperation BMWi / BMU (with aspects: Smart Home, Smart Building, ) ICT for electric mobility I (has just ended) + new: ICT for electric mobility II - Smart Car Smart Grid Smart Traffic Energy-efficient ICT for SMEs, the Administration and the Home + support for Smart Home Industry initiative projects 4

Quota of RE at Gross Electricity Consumption - Germany 2010: 16,8 % 2020: 35 % 2030: 50 % 2040: 65 % 2050: 80 % Trends: Production: more Volatility, Decentralization, Individualization Transport: Bidirectionality, Variability of Intensity Consumption: Active Customer, Individual Electric mobility Market: Liberalization/Unbundling, Prosumer 5

7 E-Energy : Integrated economic and innovative energy as well as climate program To contribute to solving energy and climate problems through the transition to smart generation smart grid smart consumption smart storage To create new jobs and open up new markets through the digital organization of technical operating and business processes To speed up innovative progress by creating multidisciplinary structures. E-Energy constitutes a paradigm shift in the electricity industry Future electricity systems will be significantly more focused on weatherdependent energy sources (such as solar and wind power) shift from consumer-oriented generation to generation-oriented consumption will be demonstrated in practical applications. 6

10 E-Energy: Germanys Way towards Internet of Energy Studies: 2006: inventory and capability analysis 2007: standards Request for proposals: 2007: technology contest Promotion activities: 2008: 6 projects selected 2008/9: Start of project promotion by BMWi (40 Mio. ) and BMU (20 Mio. ), start of accompanying research Budget at all until 2013: ca. 140 Mio. 2011: Fieldtests started / to be started 9

11 E-Energy: Activities in the 6 Model Regions Developing and testing hardware and software for an Internet of Energy Gaining know-how on standards, interoperability, safety and usability Testing models of added value generation and business processes Analyzing market potentials, improving consumers acceptance Highlighting needs for changes in the legal framework 10

16 E-Energy Basic Outcome E-Energy gave already inputs for relevant stakeholders : e.g.: involved in consultation process of Federal Network Agency, Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, process of amendment of Renewable Energy Law, various associations Smart Grid working groups Smart Grid has to be highly automated (with interaction / control possibilities / functionalities for user) Indication: load management capabilities greater for specific commercial appliances / users Regulation: Smart Grid related requirements in new amended law on the energy industry ( e.g. clear rules on data security incl. anonymization / pseudonymization, measurement law, requirements of protection profiles for measurement systems) 15

18 E-Energy Future (Future Energy Grid) - Migration Pathes towards the Internet of Energy Additional to E-Energy Projects: Work on recommendations for proceedings respectively a roadmap for a stepwise implementation of IT-Infrastructures for an energy system of the future Prospectively vision of the necessary technical and und framework developments and provisions for a stepwise development of the energy system and IT-Infrastructure up to the year 2030 Scenario based considerations for the assessments of market relevant developments and the potential for new business models From 09/2010 to 12/2011 Partners: acatech, OFFiS, TU München-CDTM 17

19 National Platform Future oriented Grids To bundle the engagement and know how of important stakeholders from politics, from the economy, from the national level and the federal states, from associations and NGOs. Aim: Develop concepts and solutions for the German energy grid. A working group covers the topic Smart Meter / Smart Grid / Distribution Net. 18

21 Development of a Protection Profile for Smart Meters BMWi has given an order to the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for the development of a Protection Profile for Smart Meters Aim: Binding requirements for technical data protection and data security standards as a base for further smart meter proceedings 3 rounds of comments for associations, (autumn) 2011 stable final version, now: development of technical directive Amendment of law on the energy industry (EnWG) 20
