NEWSLETTER 1 ULY 2017 JULY The project engine has started and there is a long way to go, but we aim at consuming as less gas as possible! It will be a game, but a serious one. Playing it for real, while driving your car with an eco-friendly style, gaining points and turning the world in green. Two intense years of research and development that you can live with us by checking out the website and signing to our newsletter. Let s play! 1 Engine on! 3 The project activities 5 Toward the future 2 The project Objectives 4 Meetings 5 Consortium E Stay updated Funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union ( ) under contract number:
THE PROJECT Road transport is one of the major causes of the environmental pollution since it is responsible for about 30% on the total emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. A possible important action to reduce the environmental impact is to educate drivers to adopt a driving style that is as eco-friendly as possible. According to the latest statistics, the driver's driving style can result in differences in terms of fuel consumption (and therefore CO2 emissions) from 2 up to 35% between a calm driver and an aggressive one. A calmer driver can be beneficial also to road safety. In fact, with 120,000 premature deaths and about 2.4 million of serious injures every year, the road traffic crashes are a major public health problem in the WHO European Region. Rising from these two pillars, the project aims to develop a highly innovative and interactive Serious Game Platform that will motivate users to adopt an eco-friendly driving style, without distracting them from safe driving. The experience developed in the project will be a mean for conveying educational messages to the drivers and will encourage certain activities through game-based elements, such as competition or rewards. OBJECTIVES The project must be ambitious in order to respond to the bold challenges it faces. To reduce the contribution of road transport in the increase of environmental pollution and to diminish its role in thousands of deaths and injuries among the world population, wants to: WHAT? HOW! foster the adoption of a responsible and EcoDriving style check the driver s ecodriving status offer personalized guidance and support support direct and indirect Ecodriving feedback a highly innovative and interactive Serious Games platform empowering users to manage their driving behavior an holistic, continuous, unobtrusive,context-aware, and multi-parametric measurement of the user s EcoDriving state a cloud-based personalised monitoring and guidance platform running on a mobile device an App and a web-based multiplayer gaming platform where the users could connect and monitor their personal EcoDriving score 2/5
THE PROJECT ACTIVITIES The project is funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union and will last for 24 months. Four main phases are organized in a total of eight Work Packages (WPs), starting from the definition of the overall user needs, system basics and architecture. Smart Sensing, data acquisition and signal processing will deliver a duly working prototype, compact and with low energy consumption. The application of User Centred Design methodology will optimize the system in terms of ergonomics, while acquisition of driver s behavioural and physiological data will structure a realistic and machine-readable representation of the user model. Finally, games. One of the pillars of the project is, of course, the design and development of serious games and intervention services to prompt a behavioural change in the player. An initial quantification phase and a subsequent evaluation phase will involve participants in UK, France and Spain, with the objective of testing the integrated system in validation scenarios. These tests will make use of different types of vehicles and drivers profiles, to evaluate and improve step-by-step the prototype. 3/5
MEETINGS The project s Consortium has established continuous communication links and a number of meetings have been organized so as to increase of cooperation towards the project s objectives. At the beginning of the year, the kick-off meeting took place in Athens and, recently, Consortium members have met in Valencia. The meetings were an opportunity for partners to get together and discuss the progress of the project as well as to define targets for the year ahead. s technical experts introduced their approaches and the current state of art of the sensors and the software components required for their intelligent information processing of the collected measurements. The first results from the modelling of both the driving status and the driver profile were presented. Finally, the first version of an interactive 3D environment for web-based game motivating users to drive in an ecological and safe way was discussed with transportation partners. 4/5
TOWARD THE FUTURE As the project evolves, users requirements will be outlined, starting from the trials performed in the quantification campaign. This will allow for the development and definition of the full software architecture, and the design of hardware components. Moreover, the inputs from the targeted users will be the basis for the creation of the online and offline platform, which will allow to further sketch the driving behaviour and the status of each user. In addition, a first version of the mobile app will be installed, aiming to support drivers in understanding their ''eco'' profile and discovering how their actions affect the travel performance. Special attention will be given to the game-elements that will prompt car users into adopting eco-friendly driving behaviours. CONSORTIUM The Consortium stands out for its highly multidisciplinary and a well-balanced team, which settles on complementary expertise across different domains. Experts in user modelling, sensor networks, signal processing Data Analytics, AR Game Development and transport risk assessment are at work to explore the predictive value of EcoDriving indicators. Academic organizations, research institutes, SME and technical companies from Greece, UK, France, Spain and Italy grouped to make you play and drive green STAY UPDATED Do you wish to follow the progress of the research and future events?
