8 You will need: Textbook Currently, a textbook for this specification doesn t exist. Instead, the theory for this course is found in the following textbooks: Title Edexcel A Level Design and Technology for Product Design: Resistant Materials Edexcel A Level Design and Technology for Product Design: Graphic Products Author Jon Attwood, Barry Lambert, Peter Neal, Jon Attwood, Geoff Hancock Geoff Hancock ISBN DO NOT PURCHASE THESE BOOKS BRAND NEW; YOU LL BE CHARGED APPROXIMATELY 80 FOR BOTH! The Product Design department will scan the relevant pages and issue as an e-book. However, if you wish to purchase a hard copy, there are plenty of second-hand copies available online that are in very good condition and at a fraction of the cost. Equipment List: You need to bring the following equipment to all your lessons: Writing and drawing equipment (black fine liner, graphic markers, technical pencil) A4 folder and notebook for notes Textbook (if purchased) ipad Technology Fund To cover the costs for use of materials, we ask that you pay a 15 contribution at the beginning of Year 12, and again at the beginning of Year 13. The contribution can be made either through the ParentPay system or by cash/cheque. Cheques should be made payable to St. Philomena s School. You should supply materials such as paints and fabric yourself, as these will be very specific to the requirements of your project.
9 Expectations and Workload Due to the nature of Product Design, with reference to machines and specialised equipment, the continuation of certain activities is not possible at home. Therefore, you are expected to make use of the facilities within the department during your study periods. Lessons are carried out in a workshop environment; wear suitable clothing and shoes when in the workshop. You are also expected to have an awareness of current issues surrounding design and technology. One way to keep up to date is to follow pages/accounts on Facebook/Twitter relevant to this subject. 11 Summer Assignment: CAD with Autodesk Inventor Autodesk Inventor is industry-standard CAD software which will be used to design and develop ideas. It can also be used to product working drawings from a single 3D model. Your task will be to learn how to use this software. TIP: Do a small amount every few days; don t cram it all in at the end of the holidays! You will need this software for projects and the NEA. On your home computer/laptop, download the following CAD software: It is free for students and you ll need to create an Autodesk account. The version you choose is dependent on your computer.
